Hi Breaking news time again? Uh, you remember two years ago just over two years ago now we had the uh Tesla uh mega pack battery fire at the what they call the Victoria big back battery here in Australia um and then I did a follow-up video on that um looking at the investigation report. So I'll link those videos in uh if you haven't seen them. Well, we've got another one unfortunately, not at the same place, but these are being installed like everywhere now I don't know how many uh if you do leave them in the comments down below. how many installations in Australia But I believe there's quite a few of them now because these are very popular now.

ever since the first one in Australia which was uh, the South Australian one I forget what it's called but famously Elon Musk at the time um said it will will deliver it in I don't know, 90 days or it's free or something like that. and sure enough they that they did and apparently um, that South Australian one that's the only one I've actually read a study on is that uh, it really was looked well and paid for itself. You know it's financially very beneficial to the state to having installed this thing. it paid itself back in I don't know, 12 months or something I don't don't quote me on that.

but anyway, um, it was apparently a financial success and that doesn't talk about that has nothing to do with like whether or not like the embodied energy to manufacture and all that sort of stuff. and that's just no. The state apparently made money with these batteries so everyone's installing them. Victoria They installed the Victoria big battery and it caught a light.

one of their Mega packs and uh, two of them ultimately uh burned and we've got another one. We've got another one in another state because Queensland doesn't want to be left out. There's a new uh Boulder Combi Energy Storage uh site and the Gen X is the company who are installing and uh running this. I don't know how the you know how all that works but anyway, um, it's Gen X are the ones behind it and uh, it's burning as we speak so it's another one.

It's not. uh, it's night time up there the moment before they could get a news crew in because it's in the middle of whoop whoop. uh but yep, there's fire trucks so they're They're cutting their way in. Looks like they have to get the heavy heavy stuff in because it's all fenced, but it doesn't look that out of control looks.

There you go. Bouldercombe Bess would be battery energy storage system and doesn't look as big as the Uh Victorian big battery one. but um, anyway, expect it to burn for days of course because these are exothermic once they start and the fire department turn up and they do what they can to like contain it to stop it spreading and stuff like that. We saw that with the fire trucks on the uh, that original Victorian one I I Believe they were like spraying the other batteries to keep them cool so they wouldn't catch a fire or something.

So that's all you can do. You've just got to let it burn out. Uh, really? So there you go. It started at 7 45 pm.
uh last last night. So in fact, this is yeah. So it's uh, it's almost 24 hours now. but uh, not.

yeah, not quite a day. It's one of the 40m lithium mega pack 2.0 units supplied by Tesla There you go. So it's got 40 of these mega pack 2.0 units. It's a 60 million dollar facility.

It's the second Larscale energy soaring system to be installed. Oh, there you go. There's another one in Queensland which they call the Sunshine State Beautiful one day, perfect the next. Queensland Where life's beautiful one day and perfect the next.

Queenslanders sound off in the comments down below to make your footy team sucks. Anyway, let's uh, there's another one here I haven't looked at this. might have different footage. Ah, get ads or is Banks in central Queensland The Blaze is believed to have started at a Tesla Lithium same storage unit near Rockhampton Okay, two two separate is still working, right? Yeah, so I don't know what it looks like today.

could burn for seven days. Hazardous? Yeah, smoke is always a problem. So there you go. Uh yeah, that didn't tell us much else.

Anyway, if you want to know where it is, um uh Boulder Combi um is as middle of Walpole but it's near Rockhampton Rockhampton's not whoop whoop. but yeah, it's right up here in Queensland There you go, sort of like centrally. Coast Queensland not all the way to Makai But anyway, yeah it's up there as there's not much doing in a bowl of Combi I don't think I've ever been there. um but yeah, like it's not much I mean there's the main town? really? um yeah, it's probably got one.

Pub and uh I don't know what's down here the Grand Hotel look at that for 99 bucks a night? No worries. So yeah, I don't know where it is in there, but um, yeah, it's There's obviously not much there's not much doing in Boulder Combi so I don't know why they put it out there I don't know if you know, leave it in the comments down below, but it probably serves like Rockhampton is a you know, fairly large. um, you know Town don't know if you call Rockhampton the city Rockhampton's a town I think I don't know. sorry for all you Rockhamptons.

Um, but yeah, there it is. it's up in Queensland So here's the Gen X page. uh, eyes trebling of revenues. There's new battery already.

uh, sopping up negative prices. So apparently this is not even commissioned yet. but it's like it's actually connected and it's doing stuff. but it's not formally um, online because that was supposed to happen in commercial operations in October inside the most.

Uh, for the upcoming summer months? Yeah, because it's not um, summer here in Australia yet? So I don't leave it in the comments: Down Below Have there been other Tesla big battery fires elsewhere in the world because we've had two now? Although we are one of the probably one of the leading countries actually, we're one of the first to uh, use these Tesla Mega packs I don't know. leave them down below. If you know what percentage they've now caught fire, you know two in Australia So something's going on. They have a special arrangement of Tesla that effectively guarantees minimum Revenue and sharing higher profits and you using Tesla's Auto bidder software which will also help to maximize revenues.
There you go. So I didn't know that Tesla don't just Supply the batteries and help commission them and stuff. It looks like they've got their own software which connects into the grid, bidding, energy, bidding systems. no idea how they work.

but um, yeah, apparently and that's why the South Australian one as I said like, made AR profit because I think they had to I think it was. Don't quote me, it was like 20 million dollars a year or something just to rent the diesel backup generators that that battery pack had replaced. So I think just one or two years rental on those diesel backup systems that they had that the state had before they got that. South Australia big battery or whatever it's called um Hornsdale Power Reserve That's it.

Um, before they got that then? Yeah. So once they got that, they didn't need the diesel generators anymore and they saved the cost. and the batteries apparently paid for itself. Um, fairly quickly.

Apparently expect to increase their revenue threefold over the next three years. Oh yes, so this won't set them back too much. but um, yeah, I don't think it's uh, we'll be starting anytime soon. Anyway, as I said I did do a video looking into to the report the Folia report for the Victorian Big Battery mega Pack and don't quote me on this.

but I believe from memory, it was a coolant line that actually like a physical coolant line that had coolant pump through it that actually, um, somehow failed. although it wasn't tightened up or whatever. Um, and coolant actually leaked onto the electronics which handled the battery battery systems or whatever And that started your battery protection systems or something. and boom, You know it said the batteries are allowed to firmly run away and once the coolant system stopped, it couldn't shut itself down because the ironically Murphy's Law the coolant leaked onto the Uh circuitry That was supposed to protect it.

So I don't know something like that. Anyway, don't quote me. I'll link in the full report. Uh, down below, you can have a read for yourself.

This isn't the report, but here's one of them: a leak within the mega pack cooling system that caused the short circuit that led to a fire and electronic uh component. Yeah, so anyway, there's the Uh Victorian big battery that quarter light. anyway. I will link in the official report.

Uh, down below for that one. And here's the: I don't know. this is the power, the control in the mega pack layout. origin of the fire stuff like that.
Anyway, it goes into detail: I'm not sure if that's the same report that I actually went through in that video. It may be different. No, that was pretty short. I Think that's a different report anyway.

I'll link in this site down below because this one has all the technical, like real-time technical data. They've been monitoring this thing. uh what? Clarity I Think we had them in a previous video. Anyway, they're um, tied into all the energy systems and they can get data from all the energy trading systems and they could see this thing in real time.

Um, what actually um happened. So external? Uh, so they're they're just going through. They're updating this page, you know, probably as I speak? Um and at 7 45 pm and they posted the article at 9am in the morning. So they're Johnny on the spot.

Um, as soon as they woke up what they they got the news. So yeah, possibility it may spread to other units. but apparently as of 8 20 uh this morning, um, the fire is currently contained Crews continuing in one of the situation. so unless it I don't know, winds change gets out of control or something.

um I I Don't know the latest but there you go. so looks like maybe only one pack damage that last time. as I said the previous Victorian battery. buy a one pack called a light but it's the adjacent Flames they couldn't stop at the next one, the one next to it uh got total as well.

There's an official announcement from Gen X no other mega pack modules have been impacted currently contained. Okay, there you go. They're working with Tesla and Consolidated Power projects I Don't know they're another contributor to the project or whatever is nearing the end of its commissioning phase which is scheduled to be completed by the end of October There you go. There you go.

They've got these: State I Don't know with the AE Energy monitoring system Market Data as I said, they've got maybe the software, the the credentials to log in uh to this system and get and get the uh, the energy data and they actually saw a four megawatt, um, a dispatch error so or a dip here by looks of it. Um, and they're presuming that that is related, um to the fire. Anyway, it won't go into all the details, but there there's certainly Johnny on the spot and they really go into analyzing it, so hats off. Cool.

The generator outages Widget version 9.8 leave it in the comments down below if you've got. If you've got access to this system, this looks really cool. Oh geez, nerds, go crazy. Thankfully, it seems that as is the case with a Victorian big Battery fire, the design and fire protection system works such that this did not damage the uh whole facility.

Well I don't know I think the Uh Victorian big battery one if you saw the live footage of the flame spreading I think it was the fire department who stopped the spread of that one if they weren't there I think the Victorian uh big battery might have come against her a lot more than the two packs that it actually did. So there you go. Um, and of course they uh Tesla if you read the report Tesla have actually you know if you read the report they talk about Lessons Learned and all this sort of stuff and I've read uh somewhere that uh Tesla are going to reduce their to reduce better Telemetry setup connection time because apparently they weren't alerted um in the Victorian one uh to something that was. you know one of the issues there.
Lesson learned: uh coolant leak alarms the Pyro disconnect being able to interrupt faults. Uh, when mega pack is off via key lock, the Pyro disconnect is likely a pyro. so like a pyro, Technic charge goes off and it flips a giant disconnection relay. I would presume I Don't know if you've got any more details on the how.

The Tesla Mega Pack 2.0 which is what these ones are. Uh, this one that's currently on fire is a two megapak 2.0 So there's all sorts of Lessons Learned And apparently you know space ends and emergency response. And yeah, I don't know about spacing because well, these look pretty close, right? There's no firewalls between them. but yeah, I think we discussed this in the previous video.

That's like a trade-off that's a like a big truck. Like, how much you know cost do you go to to build firewalls around each one, right? You know, giant brick walls or whatever around each pack to stop any potential fire spreading. Um, so there you go. Uh, we don't know.

like Tesla have obviously done stuff to you know, improve their battery packs because this is a brand new E Um, and apparently they've changed over to the Lfp batteries apparently. I Read that. Um, somewhere. the new Mega Pack 2 Tesla mega pack mega Pack just says mega Pack doesn't say mega Pack 2.0 but that that looks like the one we're looking at, right? That looks like it.

That looks like it. So yeah, apparently it's it's the brand Spanking Newer apparently uses the Lfp Uh, Battery Technology instead of the regular Lithium ion. so that's what it looks like. inside.

safe by Design uh undergo extensive fire testing include integrated well. Maybe the fire systems are you know, the because this does not look like to be a big fire? Um, so maybe they've actually improved that in that uh, regard. Anyway, it'll be interesting to see Um, you know, and even their recommended configurations are right next to each other. Etc Victoria There's a Victoria big battery, so that's one of the ones that caught on fire and that's the one that caught on fire, which we've talked about.

It doesn't say anything about Lfp cells, but I believe they are there. you go. Uh, the Tesla Mega packs installed by Gen X are supposedly more fire resistant lithium-ion phosphate laps. after Tesla last year's announced a switch away from the OEM Lithium Nickel, manganese, Cobalt oxide.
um, Nmc batteries. So there you go. Yeah, so that's a uh fight. That's a news report there.

Um, so yeah. I Guess that's you know. Fairly confirmed they're Ofp, so maybe they're not going to be as exothermicy as that's a word. exothermicy exothermicy.

Um, as the older ones. So there you go, we have another Tesla battery. Uh, fire. It's just it's like not good.

Optics I guess. But you know these things happen when you've got such energy density in batteries like this. You know, like it's you know, given enough. I Don't know how many of these systems have installed, but it's quite a lot now.

Um, so you know fires are small and let us know in the comments down below. Has there been another mega pack fire? Maybe someone has a list a list of Tesla mega pack all reported Tesla Fires mega pack night. That's all that'd be including cars, right? What have they learned from last year's mega pack? clean Technica Fire at Gen X power is is a rare occurrence says the Australian financial review which yeah, I'd say it's pretty rare. don't know the exact figure, but there you go.

this is. update from late this afternoon. uh, they're still confirming it did not, uh, damage any other pack. so that's good.

so that's really good. I'm for sure the fire is. we're Johnny on the spot too, but it takes a while to get there. As you saw, it's like in the middle of what book kind of.

I Don't even know if that town would have its own fire brigade? Probably not. There you go, it's the Mount Morgan the Mount Morgan fire station good on you. They're the ones who would have been Johnny on the spot and I'm sure they would have had a fire and rescue station. There's one there and they would have.

um, it's how far is it? It's not. It's not hugely far from uh Rockhampton there. It's only a little bit further from Rockhampton so they would have had to race in there. but uh yeah, they wouldn't have had their own Fieries, so they've Obviously they're probably converged in there and uh, they've done a stellar job I'm sure shouldn't take a huge amount of time it's been allowed to burn out.

Yeah, of course you can't. You can't really stop them. Um, it leaves and I don't know, leave it. In the comments, there's been any technology to try and stop Lithium fire batteries, but like in cars and and major battery packs like this I don't I don't even know if it's possible really.

Although I guess given enough water if you could do anything but it had approvals for operating at full capacity. Uh, just before. Oh, there you go. It has a the company has Atlassian co-founder um as well as a 20 stakeholder.

Yeah, the Victoria big battery. yeah, the battery protective systems which were offline at the time. Yeah, um, so that's that's been fixed in this one and uh, looks like there's been less damage this time around. There you go.
There have been about 40 known fires within large-scale lithium-ion battery energy storage systems around the world according to research by Newcastle universities. Paul Christensen There you go, good on you Paul There you go the 40 I don't know I don't how many? How many are there in the what anyone know the percentage? Just trying to find some data on that it might be there. look I'm not going to spend any more effort investigating. um how many? what? uh, percentage that is.

But uh. anyway. um, yeah, 40 apparently around. So it looks like Paul's actually, uh, tracking these things.

49 fires within large scale, but that's every country that's globally. So anyway, that's interesting. I'm sure it's relatively small percentage, but it's certainly non-zero because as I said, these things are inherently, um, like, there's a lot of energy density in these suckers and any. You know if if you're having a bad day and you know Murphy's going to get you out, there's only so much you can put into the engineering of these things.

uh, to make them bulletproof and you know Murphy will find a way around it. Always. So anyway, there you go. Um, if there's a follow-up I might do an investigative follow-up video to this anyway.

leave your thoughts and comments down below. We have another fire. so there it is. Um, oops, another battery pack Going Up In Smoke don't Breathe It Anyway You found that video useful and interesting as always.

Give it a big thumbs up and discuss down below. Catch you next time.

Most fires are exothermic – it's hard to find a fire where you have to add heat to keep it burning . Defeats the point ,really.

Small fire, few cells and a control module. Not involving the whole pack, unlike the Geelong fire. Guess its the difference between NMC and LiFePO4

Can't see anything special about this QLD site, other than being on a high voltage network with low loss factors. At least the one in Victoria allows larger real power flow between VIC and NSW, avoiding the cost of a new set of powerlines.
