Hi Just another quick video update on a dumpster PC Dive in this HP Pavilion that I pulled out with that Lenovo job' Yeah, the front panel comes off. that's how you get the hard drive out and it's a pretty crusty useless machine. I don't have any use for our desktops like this I still use a desktop as my main editing machine, but apart from that I used those small form-factor pcs which I've gotten a ton of. I'll try and linking some dumpster-diving videos for those like three or four videos of those and I've got like a dozen of those over you know, recent times and I thought that I would rather than I don't know what I'd do with this rather than just been ditch it or you know, parted out, sell it on ebay or whatever I Thought the processor in this is actually really good.

It's actually the best processor that I've found in a dumpster. PC It's got almost a past mark of about 10,000 It's a core I7 4 double 7, 0 so as it turns out, that's an LGA 1150 socket and as it turns out, this small form-factor HP machine under here I got that done and when I got it from the dumpster I'll try and find the video for it. but I've been using this for a long time now as my video recording PC on my soldering bench. So if ever do like you know, solder in videos or anything like that I have microscope videos my my - gah know for example then I'm capturing it on this with an external capture card and this happens to have the exact same Socket 1150 socket in there.

and it's got an Intel I5 processor which is I think about 7,000 pass mark. Let's go to the videotape so let's have a quick look at the socket that I've got. It's the LGA 1150 here came out in 2013. I Like this: CPU Benchmark Dotnet You can actually list a socket and then find the absolute best processor that you can put in that socket that you can expand your PC to.

This is fantastic. So and it's got you know, various prices here so you might go. Ah, this has got a pass mark of 10,000 pricasso you know a thousand bucks are roughly. This is like I think the last indicated price that somebody board up.

You can say oh this one's got ten thousand, seventy, three hundred and forty five bucks so it's much cheaper. So it's a really good guide to upgrading existing pcs. No, you know you can find out which CPU you can choose. Now it's not guaranteed that your PC will actually because it has that socket will actually support the individual process.

I'm not sure the exact technical details, but you know if you've got the latest firmware, first thing you should do is try and update your firmware to the latest one. You're biased to the Toutle latest version and that will hopefully amp support the highest process. not sure how the clock speeds and all that sort of work whether it's auto detection and that's I'm sure depending upon the motherboard and all sorts of other things, but anyway. Um, so as it turns out, the one that's in my solar in small form-factor PC is the I-5 Forty Five Seventy and it's not a bad chip.
It's still pretty good, as is discontinued in 2017. 3.2 gig three point six gig turbo boost thingy 84 watts is the maximum TDP on that. So that's important because the one we're looking at swapping is the four double 7 0 from this new dumpster PC which is otherwise worthless. Also discontinued and it's 84 watts as well, so it matches that.

That means the power supply and the thermals inside the PC will actually match this chip it should. So it's three point four gig, but it's got 3.9 gig max turbo frequency there and it's got an 8 meg - where's the other one? Only had a 6 medication, it's got too big more and stuff like that. It's got the same bus speed I think and things like that. but anyway, it seems to be like a near-identical There's my one I Don't think this is the K until I Pull it out.

I Actually don't know. 9 thousand, Seven Hundred and Eighty passmark There it is. Let's have a look at the Forty Five Seventy and that's only seven thousand One hundred. so that's a worthwhile upgrade.

So if I can just drop that processor in there, hey, why not? it's free. Got it from the dumpster? Don't know what do with the rest of it though. Maybe I'll back this process back in that and then just get rid of it on Gumtree or something. Sell it for Nicks on Gumtree, something like that.

Anyway, let me know. fielding any ideas, but I don't need a crusty disk copy type. PC Yeah, please excuse the crude D of this screen capture didn't have time to build up the scale. A lot of pain it.

Okay, this is the machine with the existing I5 4570. There there we go. A gig. Good enough for Australia And as far as graphics in this I've actually got it's got the internal 4600 which is inside the processor, but I actually have a g-force at 10:30 It's a low profile fanless passive cooling one, so you know it's a pretty decent little card to work in one.

I'd Recommend to Whack It. Maybe there's better these days, but you know, a year ago, year and a half ago or something that was, you know pretty much are the best value high performance one you can get in a small form-factor with passive cooling. Didn't want me at fan rubbish. Anyway, the bias is 2014 so that's a bit old school.

I Might first see if there's a newer version this firmware, upgrade it and then we'll swap the processor Wow Check this out. This is why I Love like these business-type grade our pcs that which I believe this up Pro Desk is it's a Pro Desk are 404 those playing along at home and the latest version is was released on April 30th, 2019 so absolutely fantastic! Version 2.5 6 I'm definitely going to upgrade because version 2.1 5 wow I'm way behind so that's absolutely fantastic. I'll do that first. So yep, oh definitely I want to upgrade that? thank you very much I accept how they do have a Windows II version.

all applications are closed, you betcha I Wish to proceed nice and then it's so. what's got to do is I get the flash. They'll usually be like a protected area a flash like it'll put it in there first and then it'll copy it over and make a backup and so that it can restore itself or whatever. If it you know if the power fails or you know the user does something stupid or the machine crashes, gets a cosmic ray burst.
whatever it can, so it's just saving the turret voice. This could take a while back to you and there you have it. It's now upgraded so just before we change out the processor I'm gonna run the benchmark in here and see what we get. Okay, so if we compare that to an I7 4790k at 4 gig there so we can choose that as a reference, There you go.

it's 76% the speed of the 4790k so we'll now upgrade the processor and rerun that benchmark if it works. hopefully and what it should. The thermals are the same, the sockets the same. I've got the latest firmware which is like 20, you know, early 2019.

So yeah, I'm pretty confident right? So if you've seen the video on Eevblog 2 of this machines very short video. but anyway, you'll know who that how crusty this thing was. it's just got a little lass, some sort of Radeon card down there and nothing much doing. Crusty old fan that's failed it.

I think it's clogged up with looks like it's clogged up with dust, but yeah, like there's just seems to be no way engagement in the motor at all. So yeah, there's lots of luck. So yeah, this thing's not good. Anyway, let's get this baby out.

It looks like it's got the stock intercooler on it, which add you'd expect in these things sir. More compounders probably come a gutter after all this time I'd say so. It's probably due for a refresh today here. It is some of it used over the side there, but yeah, that's a DubLi that's a stock Intel cooler that comes with the processor now.

Ok, let's get this bad boy out of here and oh oh, dust under there. whew good there it is. I'll get the isopropyl wipes and we'll clean that up. And actually that's a single 8 gig stick.

I might ddr3 I might Nick that and put it in the other one. that'll give me 12 gig instead of 8. Nice time for that isopropyl wipe. There we go.

Sweet as there it is. Intel Core I7 for double seven zero made in Malaysia So now it's time for the HP Produce canned I Really do like these things if you read the datasheet for it I have to include it here. It's like like guaranteed burning test Amish if they burn in each one. but you know, like they guarantee in a long operation of these things and really quite nice.

And as you saw, the firmware has been like maintained like in the last nine months or something. That's just that's crazy. Anyway, there's my GTX 1030 card completely passive no that fan rubbish and the thermals on this CPUs under there and that they use this nice hood to. they gets sucked in here, through the front vents, up through the front vents down here, gets sucked through, pushed across the heatsink fins and out the back through the hood.
Quite nice. It's designed for as I said, like the 85 watts for the I-5 and the I7 is exactly the same our thermal rating. So the thermal performance of this some it shouldn't be overloaded at all, should just work a treat. They're both fourth gen processes so it's got to work I'm sure it will.

All right let's get this puppy out I Believe that just lifts up. Oh, that's just pornographic really? And you can see the power magnetics down there. Those puppies? Yes! I know my screwdrivers undersized. Soomi Good enough for a stroller.

Okay, that should pop right off. Get that fan off there and nice quiet fan on this thing. It is thermally controlled and but it's really nice. There you go.

That's the bottom of the heatsink. It's really lightweight. It's got the big copper heat pipes on there and there you go. I might be able to see the fan through there, perhaps, but there it is.

Let's get that one out. That's the I-5 We got one. Let's get another isopropyl wiping there if you're wondering. want to use I'm not 100% We do have 100% stuff in a squirt bottle, but issues, these aren't many.

Yes, while 70% had these for Donkey's years. Um, and you've got a huge stack of them once and I'm still using them like 10 years after he got them more. Isopropyl is still good and there we go. That's like a bought one.

I 545 70 once again Malaysia 3.2 gig. So there they are side by side. Does anyone know if these are actually like the same dye and they just them? Or they test them and the better ones become a 4? double 7? 0 because they're both the 22 nanometer process and I think they've got the same number of cores, don't they? I didn't check that. but yeah anyway or they might just software disabled cause I Once again, I'm not up, you know, hip and happening like all the young kitties on these newfangled processors.

even though they're yeah, many, how many generations old now. I Don't know I I Stopped caring about processes in late 80s, early 90s I Think Alright, let's get this sucker in here. Triangle Triangle. There's little little notches there so you can't goof it.

Make sure I've got the right one. The I-75 7/4 double set. Yeah for double 7 to 0 and we're in alright all compound time and the thermal compound laughs away. I'm just using nice, um, coolermaster thing left over from last time.

Hopefully it's still good. No, it's not some bloody Arctic nano quantum Wang curry or whatever that is. Um, so let's give it a bell. Oh, and I forgot to show you out.

Yes! I've got to clean the bottom of the heatsink as well. so I won't forget to do that that. Yeah, that's still good. Don't need a huge amount? I will probably do it.

Not a lot. a little bit more. There you go. She'll be right.
there's my heatsink. I've cleaned it off. There's no copper pad on the bottom here like your really good ones. We'll have a copper pad directly thermally bonded to your copper.

You know thermal rods in there, but you know me, it does a job. This isn't some high performance gaming kiddie thingy. Do the alternate corners first. sorry if that's not focusing.

should a fixed focused should at least be have the resemblance of being a professional video blogger. Plug that fan back in and Bob's your uncle. No workers. It'll work a treat.

Yes I know I probably shouldn't mix and match my Sim modules, but I still call them Sim modules. What are they? I don't know. Anyway I yeah, Who cares? More memory? more better. Er.

once again, this is not a hyper performance kiddie gaming rig. No, this is interesting. There's a spare footprint down there and it looks eerily similar to one of the Trusted Platform module secure chip footprints. Those Si footprints that you get I actually found one inside the Lenovo PC that I just did a video on.

So we'd actually had a Trusted Platform 2.0 version in there which allows you to, you know, encrypt your hard drive. It's got. you know. it generates keys and has a secure number in it and stuff like that.

So yeah, maybe is is it for that? I Don't know. Does anyone know? Leave it in the comments down below. All right, let's boot this bad boy up. No outrageous bias.

beeps I think I plugged in the monitor did I Oh Memory size. Yep. I did change it. There you go.

12 gig. No workers. That means the processor works. We don't.

Winner chicken dinner. Oh well. I Just continue. Yeah, it works.

A treat There you have it. The I-74 Double Seven Zero. We know we know chicken dinner I Don't know if by the way, if yeah, please leave it in the comments. Sure I could google it but yeah, you know, does this have that Intel like that bug.

All that you know, the various bugs which apparently the processes are now slowed down. A lot of people say oh, they're now crippled and they're so freaking slow because they had to patch it and all that sort of jazz is that with the latest firmware update will do and stuff like that look I don't know. leave it in the comments I'm sure there's a million experts out there on that, but anyway, it should be better than what we had. So the memory is now our 12 gig.

Fantastic. Yeah, it's mix and match here, but she'll be right, no workers and let's run our benchmark. shall we bench? CPU And yeah, I'll probably run it through like a burning test just to be sure. And what do we compare it with last time? 4790 Oh Jesus not hugely better.

What was it last time? 84? That's not much better at all. Um, well on this particular benchmark. So oh, it's open for a bit better than that. Um, do I have to run the pass mark software? Ok, my pass mark performance test just got the free trial I Assume it'll up.
No. Ok, we'll just run the benchmark. it's collecting the temperature CPU 48.8 GPU 34. No worries.

No. PC doesn't quite look like the animation there, but I'll cut it a slit some slack. You are about to run all tests. Oh really? okay.

run and yeah. I Know these performance tests are highly subjective, but at least you have a benchmark between the different pcs. Runs exactly the same test, the same everything, same software and everything so you know it's not a bad comparison. I Know, like just the past Mic rating might mean Jack when you're doing video rendering for example and not just video rendering, but then the package and what what type of you are choosing whether it's not using the CPU or a combination of both the memory bandwidth and all sorts of stuff like that.

So just a lower pass rate mark Radian machine compared to another one might actually render video using like Handbrake for example as a common test I used to use Handbrake oh I still do actually for producing my 720p podcast version over on iTunes and whatnot and the RSS feed I still do that 10 years later and yeah it's You know it can just be it can be faster because of like various performance enhancements. So we're doing our CPU mark now and we don't really care about the graphics, but don't let it run. Come back. Oh my God.

it's full of stars for those who care about this sort of thing. Yeah, it's not going to be the fastest graphics in the business, but does alright. Whoa flicker Warning: it's doing Windows 8's whoa Man, this is heavy. Hope they paid it well.

Tripping man fighter jets. They Su-27s 39 frames per second. 43 for those he cared. 5150 Too much carbon.

Those things are sucking up. not much sky. looks pretty polluted how those get chopped down anyway. So I can we'll start again? Did space suckers? It's not even on the far side pew pew pew pew, pew pew pew Terp I Wonder how long PewDiePie is gonna last when he means hiatus? or has he come back already? I Don't know I Got no idea.

Fractals love fractal geometry. It's great. You get fractal antennas to the tonic, sort, 3d print that sucker. Memory test is boring and there you have it folks.

ACP Oh A Pathmark Radium 37 39 But the one we care about is the CPU mark and of 9150 8.5 that's a bit lower than what's on the benchmarking website isn't. But anyway, that could be because I haven't tweaked any of the processor clock speeds, haven't tweaked the bias or anything like that, and the CPU mark will depend on the memory as well. No. Does it know to just be sitting? No? to just be CPU And the case? they wouldn't be using external memory for that.

I'm sure that the routine and all be running internally wouldn't It doesn't make sense. Otherwise, you're not testing just the CPU You're testing the memory, bandwidth, bottleneck, and throughput, speed, and all that sort of stuff. So there you go. But that is an improvement.
I sorry I didn't I get the pass mark for the previous one. but I'm sure it's going to be absolutely no better than what's on the benchmark website. So there you have it. That was a practically guarantee winner there.

And sure enough, it worked. A treat. And I've got a left over. I 545 70 Does anyone wanna buy a slightly used until processor? hey buddy, want to buy this genuine Intel I5 4570 I Take cash or crypto.

So I do consider that a worthwhile upgrade because well, we're free. It didn't take me that much effort and well, I can probably sell this old I-5 What would I get for it? 50 bucks I don't know on eBay Yeah, it's money in your pocket and all this dumpster-dive stuff it. Yeah, it really is free money I some of it I do sell some of it I heard some of it I use most of the computers that I use at home and lab. here.

they are all dumpster, pcs and dumpster and stuff like that. The only one that's not is my actual video main video editing machine and I've given away a few to various people and they just all come from the dumpster. Fantastic! I'd only be worth like I could have sold that that high at higher end processor we just put in for you know 150 bucks or something on eBay probably it's just cash in the bank anyway I Know this is not a electronics but there's a lot of people out there who do like these and follow these dumpster-diving and PC type video. So I thought I'd work this one on the main channel for a change.

Speaking of which, my channel over on a library dot TV which I've now linked in my eevblog dot TV domain to my library channel pay so you don't have to remember the library channel page anyway so you can just type in Eevblog TV that will take you straight over. It's all happening over there. it's going Gangbusters I think 4,500 subscribers now and I'm like I think I'm number nine in the know. six now Mi6.

Let me check Dole. What do you know? the library dot Social website where they keep track of the top channels his ten at the moment? No idea why Anyway I think I had delusions of grandeur there I think I'm I Currently the ninth biggest channel on the library interwebs anyway. check it out. Link down below.

As always, comment down below. Catch you next time.

I too would love to find a processor like this to upgrade what I currently have inside my PC 🙂

SOUNDS LIKE YOU DON'T GIVE MUCH AWAY !!! $50 FOR A USED I5 GEN 4 BEHAVE YOURSELF

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Minus 3dB In The Teens says:

You should have just put your HDD into that machine. That GPU looks like ~GTX7800 or GTX8600. I cant believe that's a dumpster machine

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Steve Tobias says:

I will buy a few used pc power supplies you may have in surplus

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Steve Tobias says:

You only went up by 0.2ghz so benchmark will not be a huge difference

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Steve Tobias says:

Keep the power supplies they are multi purpose

Not electronics? I hate to break it to you Dave, but PCs are definitely electronic devices these days!

what did you do with that old radeon GPU and the i5? I'll take it. What's the postage from australia to the US?

My doctor's office uses an i7 4790K machine as their sign-in computer when you arrive. It literally just runs a webpage all day. It could probably run on an AMD K6 machine.

i currently rock on a i7 3770 at stock speed

Oh and no gt 1030, is not a ''high performance'' nor near that, it's one of the lowest end ones that aren't worth buying at any cost for any reason other than for testing and putting it on a graph or that you need the display adaptors, a gtx 1050, gtc 1050ti , gtc 1650 low profile card with active cooling will outperform it anytime and are actually worth the money if you're planning to actually use the thing.

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Fainthen says:

That pc is quite far from useless, if you test all the parts and it all seem to work, then it's worth selling the parts, or gather more parts for second hand part assembled entry gaming pcs that can be sold off locally or elsewhere, i7 4770 are still decent for gaming & htpc and the i5 that you took out from the other pc can also be used for same purpose.

Might wanna change the bios battery. Some of those HPs used pretty mediocre ones. CR2032 i think.

Those two chips uses the exact same die, but the i5 one usually have some problems related to frequency and stability with hyperthreading and Intel crippled them down. All those dies start off as "Xeon E3-1285Kv3" or "Xeon E3-1286Kv3" and have its features tested to determine what to turn off. If there are failing cores it would become an i3 or a Pentium G3000 series. If it is unstable with hyperthreading on it would become i5. If it can fetch high frequencies it would become the overclockers i5-4670K and i7-4770K. And if those chips manage to run at low voltages they would become Xeon E3-1200v3 series.

Nice!. Something similar in my case, a beauty Celeron with motherboard rescued from a typical office miniPC. Now is a low consumption Debian based OpenMediaVault NAS. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (hope Apple learn something in this regard).

wow, that's a 2016 CPU, at the time it cost $630 Australian, that's the locked version, so it can't be overclocked (the overclocked version cost $50 more). Also that particular model of CPU has a GPU in bedded, it's the Skylake series so has an Intel Series HD 6000 in bedded graphics. You don't even need a graphics card with that one, if you're just using it for watching videos or compiling code. Who would throw that out? It's a perfectly good CPU. Pretty sure based on the case, it either belonged to a small business or a student and was bought likely from Harvey Norman as they usually sell cobbled together "office machines" from spare parts which pretty much bottle neck each other and overpriced low end gaming PCs too. They likely used it for a few years, had a small problem and they just threw it out. A lot of overseas students to play free to play games on their computers tend to just throw their desktop computers out before they move back to their home country after studying in Australia. What a waste. Least it gets the love it deserves and a new life. Well, it's it's previous owners loss.

Not a big fan of Intel's designation system for consumer CPUs these days. Starting about 10 years ago they begun to use the same designations for their consumer CPUs as they do for workstations, so a series of Numbers and designations with everything named exactly the same, All consumers see is "i3, i5, i7" and have no idea what is going on. Least with the Pentiums you could get an idea of what it was based on it's name. It's so stupid. It's understandable with the Xeons because, it's a workstation and normally people who build workstations know what they are doing… but really Intel for the consumer market? But then again, they used this same system for their CPUs in the late 70s, so eh.

4 threads versus 8 threads, quite an upgrade

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jtretta says:

I ran the passmark benchmark on my laptop's i7 4710HQ and got basically the same results; a score of 8947. A rather interesting result as the 4710HQ is only rated for 2.5ghz(3.5ghz turbo) and 47 watts TDP.

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mark Hall says:

For someone who “stopped caring about processors in the late 80s / early 90s” you spend a lot of time replacing them and making videos about them!

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars wondras says:

A LOT of older enterprise PCs have been getting BIOS updates recently… In addition to spectre and meltdown, vulnerabilities were found in the Intel Management Engine that's embedded in so many of them.
I've got a 10 year-old Dell Latitude that saw an update in 2019. It doesn't even officially support anything higher than Windows 7…
