Hi thought: I'd do a quick video on packaging technology because it's rather fascinating bit of a product design and engineering and this is a 70-inch It's a Cogan grown which is like an Australian brand. Anyway, everyone who lives in Australia know about Cogan I'm a guy who started from his garage by the way Ruslan Kogan who by the way outbid me for the rights to the Dick Smith head the the Dick Smith our brand and the Dick Smith head. Anyway, that's another story. Um yeah.

Cogan Um, so it's a no name if you know who actually manufactures the Cogan that. Well, this particular Cogan's 70-inch TV let me know. Anyway, it's the KA Led 70 Xu - 492 10 s ta for those playing along at home I thought I Just unbox this and show you the packaging technology which goes into transport in a modern TV This is nothing new, but I don't think anyone's actually discussed it before have they? It's fascinating. so you have obviously have to transport these large screen in this case, 70-inch art.

TV and you have to not only protect them, but then you have to avoid the dumbass customer like me actually damaging the TV when you get it out of the box because that can be a bad customer experience. They likely try and return it. and like, you know these sorts of things they like, they could easily like fall flat on their face and smash or whatever. So it's really important to actually design the boxes properly And this until you come down to an industrial design engineer at a company.

you know, once a company gets large enough, they'll actually have an industrial type designer who might have like a mechanical engineering background, but more with a you know, industrial bent to it. so well. industrial design. Anyway, in don't they're typically industrial design engineers who design the packaging for stuff like this and it's not too fancy, but it's kind of like if it does the job and I think it does it well.

I haven't fully taken it apart here, but I realized once I took their first thing off. Anyway, the first part of it is the packaging straps. and these are you know, typically boxes will come with the packaging straps just for like. you shouldn't pick things up by the packaging straps because they can theirs joins on them that can actually break and stuff like that.

but this isn't just for that for like handling and things like that for like Ben I would pick it up and drag it around and potentially stop it opening if the tape comes off and things like that, it's for this particular type of packaging for this. TV There's actually no bottom. There's no fixed bottom in this thing as we'll see when we take it apart, so these packing straps that go right around the thing are actually holding the box together. There's no tape on the bottom as we'll see.

So now our first thing is once you cut open this top part here, then Bingo! this is just gonna lift straight off like that because you don't want the dumbass customer like laying this thing down flat or having to get a knife in there and cut it open. Cut the Box open or lay it down flat or whatever to try and get it apart. So first thing is is that that just lifts off like that. Brilliant is you don't have to cut any tape on the bottom.
No mess, no fuss, so there's seat. There's no bottom in that box. Fantastic! So next up, you can actually cut off this tape on the top here. I Won't bother showing you up close and stuff like that.

Anyway, there's tape on the top here which then gives you access to the you know, like the stands and things like that. but we're not necessarily done yet. You'll notice these three plastic Clips down the bottom here. Now these are rather clever in that they come out now.

try and show you this up close. Okay, here we go. Focus, you bastard right? This pokes in there like that and this is the outer part and then that pushes in like that and then Clips these two so the box is wedged in there and it holds there. You go.

it, clips in like that and you just squeeze it and pull it out like that. So these clips you take them out like this. Very clever design. Really like it.

and there's three on the back. so I'll just take these off and Bob's your uncle. We've got six clips like that holding that together. As I said, there is no tape on the bottom of this box so this one is going to lift up like this.

We can't actually take these off actually, so let's take those out and then we should rather than try cuz you don't want to be trying to lift out. I've seen people try to lift out the TVs like this or lay it flat and then try and pull it out like that doesn't work. It's not designed to go like that. So you lift that off and bingo look at that once again.

As I said, there is no bottom in that there's no tape at all. so that's really cool. and Bingo! Then you've got the foam. This is the back of the TV I didn't know which was front which was back.

They got different depth, different height foam padding because you want to because there's that. all the electronics is down in the bottom and their TV tapers like that. so that's really cool. There's our remote and stuff.

Which batteries? Which batteries? Let's have a look a what? Young Yong-joo battery. Yeah, I don't Yeah. hmm. Anyway, so there you go and look.

this just comes off like that comes off like that and Bingo! Now you can get two people just. Oh hang on on the front side, we have some nice foam lattice. look at that. cool I Like that so that is protecting the front LCD part of course cuz that's the that's the thing you're worried about.

You don't worry about like impacts on the back side. you know it's just all metal. but on the front side the LCD You don't want that to get any sharp impact so that lettuce is a really nice way of actually reducing weight as well. You don't want to saw it cuz it doesn't weigh much.
but if this was solid, it would actually weigh more. Every gram counts when you're shipping stuff around the planet. So there you go. That's really quite neat.

And there's very little wasted space in this box either because you want to maximize the space on your shipping container. So there you have it that now can come out. I Don't have a second person here, but that oh here we go. I'm going to come.

This is where you come. a gutter. This is where Dave comes a gutter. Okay so now oh yeah I shouldn't be doing this.

Should have a second person. but there you go. She's down and now we can install the feet on the thing and that there is the bottom and you'll notice it's got those holes in there for those plastic clips that we saw. so that's the foam in the bottom.

So there you go. That is the packaging for a 70-inch TVs Whoahhh Wow Yes, All right, hang on there we go. I'm gonna come and get to some here. Tada there it is.

looks intact. haven't powered it up yet. Should I bother ya? Come on, let's go hang on. can't in this valuable video about packaging technology' we actually pairing it up I know I shouldn't pair it up I should take it apart before I pair it up a bit.

sorry I'm back in the old lab. don't have any tools to take it apart. Plug her in, switch her on I've got a bloody power button I don't think so. Hang on.

Yeah, there we go. Hey, it works. We know we in a chicken dinner. pair up.

tone there. pair up music. What the heck? Yeah. Five star.

Well hang on. Five out of six fiber energy star compliant. This is like an Australian thing that's probably equivalent in other countries. but yeah.

Energy Star compliant. So anyway, there you have it. that is the Cogan 70-inch your TV yes which I am gonna hopefully use for a video wall here. That's the plan cheese that's taken forever.

the boo didn't it? Bloody ridiculous. Probably got some weird ass Android thing in it and yeah, it's got like Chromecast built in and all sorts of stuff. so I don't know. Anyway, what the heck? Like is this desist? what it does the first time you take it out of the bottle I don't know.

Anyway, there you go. Hope you found that. Interesting, Simple, but really you know quite impressive technology in technology. Quite impressive actual design and attention to details.

Go on in to getting these to ensure that you can take a TVM not only ship it, pack it with a minimum of space, but protect the TV and then have the user simply take it, take it apart without damaging the things. So absolutely fantastic as you saw it, it even once you take off the two outer boxes, it just free stands there in the bottom of that box. They've even thought about that so it's you could push it over but you know it's gonna free stand there and then you go all easy and you've got like that much room to have two people grab it and then take it off. Absolutely fantastic.
So yes, some industrial designer has really thought about oh there we go English Yeah anyway some industrial design is really thought about that so I think that's worthy video? Well he ever mention There you go, hope you enjoyed it. If you did give it a big thumbs up. catch you next time.

If it they'd put it upside down in the box, you could put the feet on before completely removing it from the box. Otherwise: cool!

If you took a high-tech device like that back in time 200 years and showed it to an engineer of the era, they'd probably be more impressed and excited by the corrugated cardboard box that it came in than they would by than the item itself — the device would be completely incomprehensible (both in purpose and how it functions), but the packaging would be a revelation!

I've never seen that sort of fancy box, but whenever I've taken something fragile like that out of its packaging I always flip it upside down, cut the tape on the bottom of the box and open the flaps, flip it right side up again, then just lift the box off. Similar principle to this in execution, but doesn't require all that additional packaging and engineering. Presumably there are unpacking instructions on the box somewhere so people know how to get in there properly, but given that people have a tendency to not read instructions I suspect a lot of the effort in designing it goes to waste — people will probably just treat it like a "normal" box.

I don’t like your facial expression when showing the Yang xxx batteries.

I just wish the packaging engineers would get away from using polystyrene. No I'm not a 'greenie'. I just hate trying to get rid of the bloody stuff as no one wants to recycle it. When you do find someone who advertises they recycle it you get there and find out, "Nah mate, not that type …."

After 25 years of being a UPS driver, I’ve seen it all when it comes to packaging….
It’s not so much the clever box packaging that keeps electronics, or anything being shipped, from damage.
What keeps things from damage is packing the box as tight as possible.
What most people don’t know is what your box’s journey through shipping actually goes through. It isn’t your delivery driver drop kicking your package onto your front door that causes damage, it’s the crammed up conveyor belt systems that tears up packages. Millions and millions of packages are sorted everyday on a conveyor belt system, and most of the time, everything is crammed on the belts going at light speed across a mega huge building. Then they are crammed into semi-truck trailers and/or jet planes. They are finally crammed into a delivery truck, where your delivery driver has to hump your box to your front door, trying to unbend and retape it as he is walking to your door to make your package look better.
If any air gaps are present inside the box, the cramming of so many packages crushes the box, thus damage will occur.
So whatever your shipping, please pack it as tight as possible, and your item will arrive unscathed.
Unless you’re doing an Amazon return and don’t give a care lol.

Samsung TV boxes are really good too.

Try doing this with an old 60” plasma, they need 3 people to lift.

Bugger the TV. I can see enough cardboard to weed suppress 2 decent sized garden beds, some sound absorber stuff and the start of a bloody good raft! 😉

Your not supposed to untape the tops either.

Hey Dave. There are actually engineers dedicated to packaging design. They’re responsible for designing the packaging to not only protect the product, but also to minimize cost and provide the desired “unboxing experience” as well. They often have gone though an undergraduate program in packaging engineering. I spent about 8 years working with packaging engineers. My role was in testing packaged appliances to make sure they would arrive to the customer in good condition. They designed the packaging and I tried to break it. Good times.

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Robert Horwat says:

How ever did we get those huge 27" CRT's out of the box? Slit the tape, open the flaps, invert carefully and lift off. Clevererer-er installers than I would flip the box first so the telly was the right way up when the box came off.

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars DeathCube says:

I was waiting for the drop the while video!

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Steve Tobias says:

I think it is doing that because you have just started it for the first time. It was setting up the Android ready for user preferences as well as looking for updates via the RJ45 input.
I love how they minimise packaging materials by lattice foam and ribs rather than the solid cases. Some of this foam these days like packaging beads are made from potato starch and break down in water. Doubt this would be used here though.

Kogan? Sounds like what comes out of your rear end during a bad bout of diarrhea.

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Andy Delle says:

Where did you buy it at? "Bing Lee"? Always cracks me up. We have used to have "Crazy Eddie" in the north east USA. Same thing! Then there was "Mad Man Muntz" before that. Famous for TV's with two stage IF strips! Look that up, you may even want to do a video on Muntz and his ultra cheap 1960s electronics. He was quite famous at the time.

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chris Lambe says:

Be happy the battery says Alkaline and not heavy duty

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars FlyingMoose says:

You missed the coolest thing… If you squeeze the sides of the lattice foam it will collapse down, you can see how it was a smaller piece of foam that’s cut and then pulled apart.
