Youtube is about to make a HUGE change to mid-roll ads on every video on every channel. All creators are about to be opted-in to mid-roll ads for new AND existing content.
You are about to be bombarded with ads!
This also potentially impacts the revenue and discover-ability of creators.
EXPERIMENT: I have enabled automatic mid-roll ads for THIS VIDEO ONLY as an experiment to see what impact it has on income, discover-ability, and how many automatic ads Youtube inserts.

Hi Time for another update video because Youtube are making changes yet again and you know every time Youtube make changes, it's for the better. Anyway, this impacts not just creators like myself, but also impact but more importantly impacts the viewer you of air. It doesn't matter which channel you watch, almost certainly you're going to be impacted by this change. So Youtube the other day sent an email to all us creators.

Hi! there you're receiving this email because we are making some changes to mid-roll ads that will impact your channel. These changes will make more videos eligible for mid-roll ads to increase your monetization potential. Sounds great for the creator, doesn't it? Anyway, let's go today. Only videos longer than 10 minutes are eligible for mid-roll ads.

Of course, if you don't know, the mid-roll ads are those annoying ones that pop up in the middle of the video You're watching your video. you're really getting into it then all of a sudden by this Vpn or whatever Bloody hell or play this game mobile game. Really annoying. Anyway, starting in late July, so up until now, us creators have not been able to put mid-roll ads.

We don't have the option to put mid-roll ads on videos shorter than 10 minutes. That's why you might have seen. Possibly some Youtubers who make shorter videos padded them out to like just greater than 10 minutes so that they could insert mid-roll ads and potentially make a lot more revenue. Starting in late July, all videos longer than eight minutes will be eligible for mid-roll ads instead of 10 minutes now.

So they've decreased it As part of this change, we will turn on mid-roll ads for all eligible videos. This means videos where you may have opted out of mid-roll ads will now be opted in. I've experimented with mid-roll ads in my videos a couple of times over the years and I didn't like it and and like so I've every almost every video I've uploaded has mid-roll ads turned off. All I have is these skippable ads at the beginning of the video, so you have the option, you know, after five seconds or whatever to skip the ad if you don't want to watch it.

And that seems to have been five for my monetization. I know other creators have said oh, you can double your revenue, your ad revenue by placing mid-roll ads and things like that and I like, no, I I personally don't like mid-roll ads, so I'm not going to subject my viewers to mid-roll ads. So I've got like 1600 videos on my main channel. So what they're saying now is they're going to opt this in, not only for new videos I upload, but for all existing videos.

It says all eligible videos. So every video that has monetization turned on, they're going to opt you in to mid-roll ads. So my entire back catalog, Every video creator, You watch the entire back catalog of videos. They're going to opt in to mid-roll ads.

Even if creators like me specifically said I don't want mid-roll ads. on that, then it's going to go channel-wide and turn on mid-roll ads. Yes, by the way, I am using a green screen and I do know there's a green tinge around me and whatever. Anyway, I'm experimenting with that.
So this is really freak. This is a huge change and not so much to the creator because the creators will potentially get more money from this. Um, even if they don't realize if they didn't read this email, another stupid Youtube email Just delete, you know. And they didn't realize they wouldn't realize that all of their back catalog of videos are having ads mid-roll ads.

Those annoying pop mid-roll ads switched on. Anyway, future uploads from monetizing channels will also have mid-roll ads turned on by default. Turning on auto mid-roll ads saves creators extra work. Oh, we're helping the creator while helping increase the monetization potential.

We're helping you again for new and existing content. See existing content. They're doing this to all my 1600 videos on my main channel. Hello, my second channel.

Mid-roll ads on. Unless I do something, we use machine learning to uh to automatically find the most natural breaks in your video to increase monetization potential Where balancing use while balancing user experience, mid-roll ads are not a good fit for your videos. You can indicate this preference in Youtube studio by July 27th. If you have not used mid-roll ads before, give it a try.

After these changes, you will still be able to turn mid-roll ads off or adjust the placement for each video manually. Yeah, 1600 videos. Some channels have got a lot more videos than mine. You can't go in and change them all.

It's just absolutely ridiculous. So let's do it now or never. This is a huge change. Obviously, they're getting pressure from the advertisers or and or Youtube are getting desperate because they want to beef up their balance sheet or something.

Uh, perhaps. But I think yeah, it's pressure from advertisers. We need more ads displayed more frequently on more videos, so they're just going to go Hey, okay, we'll just nuke our entire platform and just enable it on every auto Opt-in on every single video ever monetized and uploaded to our platform. Gee, thanks.

Unbelievable. The truth is, these are not very bright guys and things got out of hand. Just follow the money anyway. Um, so here's there: are frequently asked questions, go through a lot of the same stuff.

Once again, mid-roll ads will be turned on for all eligible existing videos and future videos, including those videos where you may have previously opted out of mid-roll ads. I've specifically opted out. Now I'm going to opt-in all of them, but it's okay. You'll get a count of five second countdown timer that an ad is coming up and on other platforms like uh, desktop viewers and stuff, you'll see a little yellow marker so you can see how many ads are going to be inserted into a video and or have have been inserted into a video and where they are in the video.
So just yeah, after this date, please leave it in the comments down below. How your favorite creator: How they went from zero mid-roll ads to like five mid-roll ads? Because I've heard recently that a lot of, uh, there's been a lot of complaints about Youtube have been ramping up if content creators have enabled automatic mid-roll ads because there's two options automatic or manual placement here and it's easier just to do the automatic. And I've heard uh, reports that people have seen like eight or ten ads in like a 30 minute video or something like that, which is like a typical length of one of my videos. you know, in 20 to 30 minutes minimum.

Imagine how many ads that Youtube would insert into my videos? Unbelievable! User studies indicate that automatically placed mid-roll ads are two times less interruptive than manually placed mid-roll ads. So they're saying that their ai bot knows better than you where to place ads in your own video. Aren't mid-roll ads annoying for viewers? While some viewers might find mid-roll ads annoying or interruptive, we take care of predicting the best ad placement for minimal interruption to viewer experience. We aim to balance the needs of viewers, advertisers, and creators on our platform.

Yeah, so let's have a look at what Youtube have to say. shall we? either automatically or manually automatically? Place mid Rolls is the default and works best for most creators. With this setting, the number and placement of mid-roll ad breaks on your videos will be auto-generated This means we'll do the work of finding the best ad placements for you by looking at things like where the scene changes or the conversation ends, or if there's a transition to a new topic. We recommend this option for three reasons: One, it's easier for you, easier with auto mid rolls we do the work for you.

Two, it's a better experience for users, and three, it will increase the speed for you of an ad being placed on your haha. Of course, in some cases, did you see that I'd be included? Greater likelihood of an ad being placed on your video. So what they're essentially saying here i think they say it in the text somewhere too is that if the you, the creator me don't turn on automatic mid-roll ads, then we will have fewer videos than if we even choose the manual method. So even if we go in there, even if we go oh, I'm going to stuff my video with five ads in there at five minute intervals.

and no, you will get less ads than if you turn on the automated one they just go to. Their little ad placement algorithm goes: Oh, does this video have auto ads enabled? Oh, I'll skip that 50 of the time or something like that. I don't know. Anyway, So yeah, they're forcing you.

Not only are they pretty much forcing you mostly forcing you into the uh, doing these mid-roll ads, they're opting you in automatically. So not only are they twisting your arm to opt-in to mid-roll ads, there's twisting your arm yet again to have automatic placement. Which means they get to decide how many and where in your video. They place ads.
And as I said, there's already been reports complaints from people saying oh, I had to stop watching this channel's videos because I counted, you know, eight or ten different ads in 30 minutes. So yeah, I don't want to be opted in to this because I personally find mid-roll ads annoying and which is why I've turned them off on practically every one of my 1600 videos on my channel. I just have the skippable one uh at the start. and I hope you know viewers appreciate that.

I mean me personally watching Youtube videos. I never see ads, not because I use an ad blocker, but because I subscribe to Youtube premium and then part of your Youtube premium. There's a magic algorithm you don't know how it's divvied up, but part of your Youtube premium uh, subscription actually goes directly to the creators instead of actually displaying ads. But I know a lot of people don't like to support like a monthly payment youtube premium thing because they're already subscribed to Netflix and Hulu and you know, Stan and Disney Plus and whatever.

You know, Amazon Prime and all those uh, sort of things. And Youtube's yet another one. Um, so I can appreciate and understand if people don't want to do that. and I have always supported people using ad blockers.

If you want to use ad blockers on my video, go right ahead. I have no problem with it whatsoever. An ad blocker. I don't know how these mid-roll ads.

How if it even blocks these mid-roll ads? I don't know. Leave it in the comments down below. if you go. Oh yeah, I use that blocker and it gets rid of all these mid-roll pesky mid-roll ads.

By the way, as I've always shared my Youtube income with my audience. Um, look down here. your estimated ad revenue. Uh, for the last 28 days 2384 bucks? That's Yankee bucks.

Your Youtube premium revenue was 552.. So what is that like? Uh, you know, a little bit under a quarter it? Oh yeah, there it is. 18.8 So like just under 20 of my revenue comes from Youtube premium. Anyway, So I'm going to go in there now and action this.

Open Preferences mid-roll ad preferences today. only videos longer than 10 minutes, blah blah blah yeah. If mid-roll ads are not a good fit for your videos, you can change your preferences below. Your preferences can be changed until July 27, 2020.

I want to increase my monetization potential with mid-roll ads automatically. No, I will individually review and enable Motorola ads on new uploads and existing videos. Yes, that's what I want because I don't want to annoy my viewers. And I hope everyone appreciates this because I'm potentially going to take a hit on this financially.
But we'll see about that. My content is not suitable for mid-roll ad breaks. I wouldn't say that I am worried that mid rail ads will decrease my viewership. Yes, I am concerned that too many mid-roll ad breaks will be placed.

Yes, other, I don't care, I'm not gonna. They're not gonna care to read it anyway. So save there you go. So that's it.

Mid-roll ad preferences saved. Ta-da There you go. So you are not going to be annoyed by hopefully not going to be annoyed by mid-roll ads for all of my existing Uh content plus my new videos. But as I said uh, creators like myself are potentially going to take a hit from this because I can say oh, I'll continue to update you in the following months if my ad, my ad revenue has been fairly consistent.

Here we go. Here's my ad revenue for the last year. so the Blue Line there is my total ad revenue. Uh, for the last year it's been, you know, fairly consistent.

It always peaks up in uh, December. There it is, but it's recently picked up. I don't know why? don't know what's going on there. Anyway, if I see a dramatic decrease in, say, like I don't know, you pull the data out of that.

Anyone want to eyeball that for an average uh figure? But if we start if I start seeing that dramatically drop off, then we'll know the reason why. It's because Youtube are punishing creators for not enabling for not wanting to have their arm twisted to enable automatic mid-roll ads. So there you go. Yeah, don't like it at all.

Um, I I think that's a real dick move on Youtube's part to do that. but obviously they're being pressured by the advertisers to do it and this will affect every Youtube channel, every Youtube channel you watch. But even if the revenue does, uh, drop off, or even complete, even if Youtube completely demonetized my channel, I'd still be okay because I've got a a bunch of awesome uh, patrons and you can go to my Patreon.com page or my subscribe Star page. If you don't like Patreon for various things that they've done dumb things that they've done over the years, then I or you can also support me on subscribe star direct paypal donations.

A lot of people do that. Uh, you can buy my merch and multimeters and you know all my the stuff on my store. That's where a lot of my Um income comes from. And also visit my website and support my awesome advertisers over on the website and the Eev blog forum as well.

because that's where probably like a majority of product sales and advertising on the website and forum is where kind of like the majority of my income comes from. So even if Youtube demonetized my channel, that's why I can afford to do this. Even if I take a a hit on this, I can afford to do it because I've got awesome supporters and more awesome advertisers over on uh, my website. But yeah, I a lot of creators do not have that.

Their sole source of income is Youtube so they may have you know no option but to do this. And I know, uh, other channels like Fran Blanche for example, she was forced to turn on, uh, monetization because she didn't want to. but she was forced to do it because Youtube weren't sharing her videos. Um, so once she as soon as you turn on monetization, bingo they started sharing the videos.
So it'll be interesting also to see if this impacts my uh, viewership as well. Like how my videos are shared, impacts the views stuff. It starts impacting my views. especially like notifications to subscribers and and shared and things like that.

Well, that's another level of dickishness. uh that we'll see. But anyway, um yeah, I'll keep you updated in the following months about so this is going to happen next couple of weeks end of Julyish so they haven't put a specific date on it. But yeah, come August at the end of August.

if we if Youtubers start seeing a drop-off in views and or revenue, we know this is the culprit being pushed by the advertisers. Unbelievable. Ah, another Youtube change. Anyway, Um, yes.

if you want to support me on all those platforms they're all linked in down below. appreciate it very much. Hang on. I just started editing this video.

I noticed it's well over 10 minutes. Sorry, I like to waffle. Anyway, I am the waffle master Anyway, I thought it'd be interesting. I might enable mid-roll at automatic mid-roll ads for this video and this video only to see how as an experiment.

Sorry, um, but I think it's probably a good experiment to see how many ads they will automatically insert on my channel. So I promise I'll only do it for this one video. But yeah, it'll be interesting. So sorry if this is interrupted by um, mid-roll ads, stick with us.

There's a reason for it, and I and then I can get good data on how much money it uh, generates. and you know, also over a regular video. perhaps? um, stuff like that. Maybe I'll donate the proceeds to some charity.

That'll be cool and I hope you found that informative. And please leave your comments down below. Catch you next time you.

I hate the Ridiculous Youtube ADS ! ! ! I now get 2 ads within every 5 minutes, they recently changed the option to SKIP the AD, I swear I cannot wait to Bitchute uploads all Youtube videos to Bitchute. I truly am sick of youtube ads, in a 30 minute video I get 12 ads, I have to make a video about that because I'm not sure if I'm the only one, or there are more and more people going through this hell ads, ads that no one needs. I hate it. Can't wait for the next company that replaces youtube. I appreciate this video, I thought I was going crazy by myself. But it's true, the ads are too much, I can't enjoy a video anymore, sometimes I just close the video because it's way too much ads, youtube I am so sure you know this is happening, and it's really sad.

it is my experience that they place them at a time when you are waiting for a big result or reveal just like on TV . They suck and are very annoying.

Most likely are plans by YT to increase ad numbers and length. Looks like YT is paralleling satellite TV & cable TV schemes. May have to do same with YT what I did with them: quit watching. YT is starting to get too time consuming anyway. I have better things to do with my life.

I think there is some desperation here. I've noted that since COVID, the ads have been getting lower and lower rent: fewer big companies advertising, and a lot more "cottage industry" type stuff.

    Dave thx for sharing.
It's the same old dope dealer story. They start out giving the stuff away, here it's video space. Then keep giving away the video space just like a dope dealer would for his products. After a large number of takers occurs then they start turning the thumbscrews of revenue. You don't jack everything at once that causes a shock to the system and participants leave en mass. You jack everything and squeeze the participants over a fair amount of time. So, what you are seeing Dave is just another of a string of jackings on this platform. Google has shareholders and advertisers to answer to, but hey, they've always had shareholders and advertisers to answer to. It's just the dope dealer recouping the money he lost in the beginning. To make bad matters worse their bot sometimes wrongfully deletes/suspends a channel. Then the channel owner has to appeal to that same bot for a fair trial. YouTube seems to have gotten too big for it's britches. Hopefully one day a more fair and just platform will arrive so we can all leave this greedy platform.
Sorry all, for the long rant but it's just awful how YouTube treats it's creators.
    Again Dave thx for sharing.
