Dave talks with Shahriar Shahramian from The Signal Path.
This is an introduction and we talk about being Youtubers etc.
This is PART 1
NOTE: Yes I know the video sucks, wasn't much light in there and camera did what it wanted to do.
Yes I know the audio isn't perfect either, Shahriar is a softer talker than me, so I had to run it through The Levellator to even it out.

Hi Yes, we're not in the lab and yes, that might be someone you know Sharia from the signal path. Yes, chri. likewise. I Finally made it to Australia It was a very very long trip.
Yeah, he has a slip. Yeah like that. So I took six hours to get to LA and then 15 hours to get to Melbourne and an hour to get to Sydney So it's all in a row. So anyway, that's why my hair looks like this excess difference of that still looks trendy behind a night anyway.
Wait, no, we're not in the lab, we're at some super-secret location. Yes, it's a very secret. ID I Guess anyone gets quiet? The reason we're in here is because it's quiet and I know what we're gonna talk about. Yes I thought that um yeah I'm talking about at lunch before I was mentioning what we're talking here.
Why? I thought you'll be closed out of conversation, just experienced it and what we work on and some of some of this bit of the other electronic stuff that you know that I sometimes come across and have a chat just just like a conversation that as if you guys are part of it I think would be interesting. Yeah so one of the things I was talking about actually purposely didn't tell this day. So I say it now. all right.
So when I first started doing YouTube it was because I couldn't teach at Columbia University as an adjunct professor because they started to require a green card. we didn't have one at the time so it's not going to start a YouTube channel. So now I start one and at a time your channel is also pretty young right? Yeah, I'm starting right? Yep yeah you know this channel still going. So I went to here's a Forum and I advertised my channel on his phone.
so at a time you know this was obviously you know could have been a competitive thing I remember what they've said to me and I haven't told the story as I remember it so if you wrote the II wrote back and said to me that is exactly where I'm glad that more and more people are taking this path of educating people and I'm going to do a first subscriber. so this was my first one. That's right. Well Ramaiah so I did my gardener I write I thought I remembered you first a mile but I don't so just what you put this on your Ryan oh my cuz I professor for yeah so there's no interest because I I was moved by that because it was at the part of the raw and she intentions that we want to educate want to provide contents right and he was another mother life.
Get this guy off my you know competition I don't ever my to a party number one I wanna yellow Yeah so so anywhere like to thank him I want to sign our I can say I didn't tell them that story there is Yeah it's a very pure hearted approach to it and I Appreciate. Excellent! Anyways I've been doing I mean my channel is peanuts compared to anything we we decide the signal pops in yet yeah I mean it's the signal signal car for Mt I mean I my video I have a fraction of the number of episodes there as I think I feel my 90th the source or some yoga hundred I use a much more involved usually my almost all of our much more involved in more in terms of production the right I mean the thing is the difference a little bit is that I tend to target a little more advanced topics. yeah I and I thought that was a little bit of what was missing in YouTube And it's a challenge in itself because there's very advanced topics. The very esoteric so that the number of people were interested in them is actually much smaller right? So by definition when you make something more advanced and let people watch it, but then the doors people will watch it, hopefully get more out of it because there's like okay, this content just doesn't exist and then I kind of started getting to this really high-end instrumentum total get some tear downs of like the lectroids 100 gigahertz to celosia open key side 60 weeks go from stuff like that so that people are starting to enjoy that. Yeah so anyway they haven't have been always in touch see here and then and we did that. a power. We did the Amp hour which is very popular. Link that one in down below.
It's like an hour and a half or two hours or something of us. Yeah, nothing away. Yeah, the reason we are not in in the lab? because Love is like on the other side of the planet. basically.
Yeah, we decided the I was just too much. I'm only get for one day. Yep, so we can. You know he just just the same.
Yeah I Really appreciate that. Well you're in Melbourne You're not someone else? Yeah, yeah, so you could have couldn't It could be me. couldn't resin inside? Yeah, that's hard when you only got one day yeah us to get back to the lab and do something so sorry I know people want to see us do yeah editorial together a teardown but it's a lot of work. as you can attest it.
Yeah, maybe maybe an opportunity will come up in the future. Now we were talking about at this lunchtime and it ties into the the you couldn't teach so you thought you to get on. YouTube And you were saying even though you don't have a huge number of total number of the only inherently a total across all your channel, it was more than a lifetime's worth of a regular teacher a disability. This is really the extraordinary there art of being on YouTube even in for me.
So YouTube gives you statistics so you can actually see how many minutes people are care so what can either like Yeah yeah so it was exactly This is different. a number of views because people can often a know that this or that close and then we watch it. but you can tell you it all up. and for me, even as a small Channel it's 53 years, right? Fifty three half years of continuous human consciousness at the content that I have as a single person.
I mean the reach is extraordinary. Its review and you're only a relatively small Channel Yeah I mean I Okay, you're a high begin the engineering spot Yes, but it's good. Nothing inside of action. but this is this. really? the digital access. Is this revolutionized completely the way we can come in and this is unbelievable and yet it's for me. It's doubly meaningful because I work in the industry that develops the circuits that go into the systems that enable this communication. So the fact that we can get on our cell phones and this and that's so much data I mean the data is come from somewhere right little.
You're constantly working on the next generation optical circuits or wireless circuits rolling or 5g systems for example, or the next generation of coherent communication systems on there with the optics and this is kind of both ways. I am both the user of that ecosystem and in a small way, the creator of that ecosystems. Very interesting. Yes, it's great.
Have you ever divided the number of total number of watch hours by your total views and got an average VM Bigger? Yeah Yeah! I Have I have something on my videos typically about an alluring yeah I don't know about an hour or so, you know the long ones, but they're not always an hour long and it turns out that the amount of time people are willing to spend to watch something is actually only about 10 to 15 minutes tops off yet. So for me it's a little more because people tend to watch the episode, but again, it's very specific. But you look at some of the most successful YouTube channels. their videos are only seven a seven yen.
As far as everything, it's lonely as a sweet spot in YouTube Sweet spot, right? But you can't do anything in six nine. You're not. do a tutorial, no you cannot. No, you can do like what is a young.
basic things but not so really. Yeah, yeah, we were talking about the electrode boom which we fight a lot for. My only love I Believe caters to a different audio and it's amazing that he started after both of us right? Yeah. and he has now doubled the number of subscribers as Dave has which is crazy and he also I think is starting to yeah I just only do YouTube your channel Yeah, any plans for the future? They say getting bigger is your subscriber base just going up linearly I think I haven't checked to see that it I haven't taken a derivative of the engagement but so I mean is sitting at like forty thousand forty seventy thousand subscribers right night like I says tiny compared to some of the other channels but each is it take.
It's very time-consuming to make make an episode right I think we had the discussion of love is like a so you may not realize but the the episode that takes the least amount of time for me to make it the repair. the repairs are shortest by far these reviews I'll take forever there by title. Yeah because I oh yeah, Hallelujah! because I have to be you know, devise an experiment I have to make a create one from scratch, that sustain instrument and then kind of. You have to be completely familiar with the instrument and then do the experiment I have to build it all once tested, make sure all works and disassembled anyway. it's just it takes a long time to load on. Yes I spend a long time in my lamp agency so if you still have enthusiasm to do those sorts of yeah really, involve one yes I said you know it's funny because so maybe it'll buddy. Let's say a year or two ago when I would get an equipment instrument like okay, I'm going to do it, but now I have a backlog and you got a backlog Lorna's it's a background in trouble. sure it becomes the children they think show your way goes out of the door.
yeah when you know everybody is knocking in a rush or single he wears my reviewing it. Yeah the worst part it was like yeah the best again. but uh yes I am I'm gonna continue to try and obviously do more and more. But and I very recently excuse me a couple of months ago I started doing a little bit of patreon.
yeah and uh just so that I can buy more broken equipment because these things you know I've noticed I have a feeling that my repair videos have raised the cost of project equipment. it happens. people complain about more at myself all the time. Advice: do Annie by using right all the products are because I never I used to I did every time I do repair something it's literally like RF equipment I go back to Paya Lebar say sauna by like a thousand I'm sure myself earlier.
so anyway so things become more expensive as a result. so then it's harder for me to fly it and do another repair video. So but I have a little bit of patreon support and now and again I've met this before. What? I really appreciate the support from the from the people and I just buy the equipment and so I can repair it I and the reviews take forever.
I'm going to continue to do it as my time allows and we'll see where it goes. Would you do it full-time if I go to a point where it was bringing in enough money to do would you actually quit your 9:00 to 5:00 and I don't think so I mean my patreon gold I've put it as a joke that if oh, you need to get $10,000 an episode I will quit my job and do everything in a Penguin suit. Alright, but obviously is a joke right? Yeah thing is I know I do research right I got actual actual. That's more important to me to me.
another personal level I would yeah I don't think it would I mean someone really unreasonable number Sure, but obviously that's unreal. but I don't think I would ever quit this research I mean that's why I work up a lot is because it's research. Yeah to me is yeah. I mean I don't do much engineering anymore.
used to be a real engineer you know now I pretend to be right on the eevblog and it's like yeah I A lot of people ask do I miss it and yeah, yeah I miss doing it but also don't miss the grind either. You know I like knowing the fact that I go because sometimes I've worked for two years on a product. Yeah and it just gets chicken. Well I work too using my wife like that. like and nothing comes down to this. Very few of my because: I never worked on consumer stuff. Yeah, it's not like you know, like you should come to research. Yes I know much good stuff this time and that can be demoralizing.
but now I'll make a video. Fifty hundred thousand people might watch it and it's you know, like a friend even though it was not, you know it's about it. Like I said, contributing to encouraging other people to do the same thing. that's you know more worthwhile than even my sort of.
you know, yeah, we need or want to, you know, do engineering every day. Yeah, I mean I totally get them you want to be happy at any other day, right? I mean if your happiness, changes of life, changes in you, that's fine. But when we're doing being able to do research and you know, work on some state-of-the-art communication system at that's still number ones that you feel really really my number one is change. My number one is oh yeah for sure for jerking on interesting stuff and that's like yeah.
and I mean some of my hobbies have shifted around over the years to, you know I used to I just don't do but I used to really like photography I used to do a quite a bit of it, but now I can almost have completely stopped in favor of doing the videos. So yeah, it comes and goes here. It's fine I'm going to continue making videos as much as I can. It's just sometimes it's too busy and when we do a tape out which is when we submit a an integrated circuit for fabrication but it's called tape out is because in the old days I used to do sir comply type yeah exactly what a nine-hour butter.
So anyway so bad maybe was a for sometimes I I Stay in the office was three days Wow and I fell asleep for a couple of hours only in the office because because it just takes that Wow so uh but in a very very committed, well committed Yeah, even though it's not, you don't really do you have a deadline that you got to meet or is it no, we just need to get know. We know we do have a deadline often. Each of that. The thing is, it's one of those things if you don't set yourself a deadline and do it.
if you do it right, it's just going to drive. Engineers are the best when they have a deadline. yeah we are. They're like freaky ability of our it is.
Frankie how he didn't make it with like minutes to spare yeah yeah, be like yeah I mean I dream a different yeah yeah yeah. As much as people always say oh hi, he's just one of the funny things I was asking how you should disciplines like bully I am NOT discipline never I already bad at yeah asked me Anna but I do again I do my best that I can and now nowadays you know I ever since I became the department head as the laughs from my my smaller departments here look there. it's just even harder because I have a lot of other random things I have to do and which may not even have necessarily be engineering related anyway that that that takes away from their joy sometimes. yeah but not enough to no no no not even about the whole that's one of the other things like. and I I don't think I would ever be able to be summarize never touch anything technical no I was doing yeah interesting. What do you think about online university and other are teaching stuff like you know Carnac at it because I've got the Evie Academy out. Yeah there's going to be more content David now works for me full-time He's going to be producing yeah tutorial content that doesn't pay for itself. you know I might make it $50 a video.
Yeah, fifty dollars revenue which is nothing. don't pay for it. but I I want that content to be helped? Yeah yeah. honestly everything including what I do in millimeter-wave expertise, let's say you can learn all that material right? I mean there's something that okay, you have to be experienced and so on in order to really comprehend it, but you Can get the material anywhere you want.
So it's the problem is that the way the system is is just learning an online without having it degree from idea from place. Then it's difficult to other people to say ok you are qualified Yes so I just disappear have you but putting it but a good a real good online university that had pushed the contents out. especially like for example when you put a video out you're not after the revenue not. But you know a lot of this fake online universities that are set just to you know just get money other people with a promise of the job that they'll never grow up.
yeah yeah those are the devil but yeah but but other than that the off course and put them in I even some of the some of the most famous figures in my industry. there's a reservoir views a professor and he's got lots of lots of books is very famous. if your industry you would know him for sure he has a channel and he you know put stuff. had some videos of the teaching I'm along electronics and this guy is like the the God and for teaching basically in the industry and as well as for research she has a publication I was every year top top conferences in the world so to get a chance of them explaining something to you is extraordinary but uh you know but it's not the same as being in this platform because we're always because the lectures are you know from a university that gives you their differently idea? Yep, that's really the thing but put it on.
I'm very good to see how people would actually receive that I'm pretty sure people are really gonna like it because I've heard a lot of the math tutorials from you. so yep well will say but I definitely won't get as much view so it kind of like no time via he can't take make a fool. Yes because as soon as you watch a tutorial video it's really you want to absorb and learn it and that's tough right? yet difficult or everywhere everybody I'm going to say but you know watch a chair down it's a is more in turn a major I Gotta say it's a to time Yeah exactly yeah yeah there. I think I know why people like repair videos because it's like a puzzle right? It's A If you're you strongly it's only they're sorry and they try to do it well exactly and you know and all homemade halfway through this I have any watched it all yet like I mean it is a suggest is a debugging error. Yeah yeah and you're playing it. It's funny about the train is A Europe rewards you when some even someone else. If someone else solves a problem yet your brain rewards you for having watch I'm just ready to get that done. That I'll get a literate open mean here? Yeah, exactly.
It is like you set down your way up inside. That's all. Ah, science videos like you know. like if they teach you a little things that you didn't know I was called.
you know what did I learn today? Yeah, whatever they're called, you know they give you that little dopamine here as you know if something did. I'm saying yeah, you actually ain't very popular. Addiction to gambling is related to bad food I thought it was related to the other brain rewarding you for a perceived pattern detection that's not there. Yes, yeah.
and you see other people weaned and young yourself? You have a recognition. Yeah, exactly. yeah. So pretty cool stuff.
But anyway, I'm going to continue making videos awesome but it's not your turn to come to the US the U.s. Yeah and yep, yeah, it's come here to the New Jersey Side Gramma you can go to Bell Labs Can work on lab to show you some how to be a loser and come to my little tiny lab my basement and see my cat. Your cat. Oh hi Cat sorry I'm not.
you haven't met at my cat. Oh you're one writer cause it's totally friendly Oh Perfect. You don't have a you have a dog. Give it up I know I don't know I'm not allowed to have a dog.
probably Woody? Fine. Okay Dogbert I'm a dog person. Yeah yeah. I like those too, but which is a very special furniture.
Couch Couch is a dog. yeah I mean them. hello couch I mean did I get these fetches? Bing rides a bag so he behaves like like a dog. That's right, you soak them.
they'll be more of the videos and a lot of other people asked for money. Everybody's beginning. Everyone died. No, it gets you.
what. My most thumbs down video and the most number of subscribers I ever lost in one video was because I did a dead cat joke I kid you not, they took it so seriously that I had you know 200 people unsubscribe like that's a massive number for one video. Yeah, you know. and they were I'm and the comments just abusive because I've you know what I've done because I said all the best cats a dead cat or so know that then I'll say it again and we'll get a whole bunch of Thundermans video Awesome! No no, the best cat is one squished under the tread of my car behind I probably right back. Hey, it was like but you're like you don't actually do that No, no, it's just the Joker but that's how much I don't idolize cat, you know and no, no I mean Casa I guess I have a huge guts and distribution also. but oh okay, my eyes has a cat I wouldn't get close to that animal. but I've got it. Yeah my cats very friendly Anyone comes on the video because of the squished it on that note I hope you like this little.
yeah yeah I'm think we just turned on the camera I'm very you know, unscripted on so I hope you enjoyed. We could go all day but you know we're actually almost out of memory card and yeah, because I didn't plan properly. well I find it was great Ambria I'm a professional video blogger like they come like half Papa for this beautiful background. Alright yeah and if this bench ask everyone to use FL I'm filmed in front of a live studio audience.
Yes! hmm alright alright thanks. Jerry look I'll catch you next time they spent is that that is televi and I later the pilot LED is flashing on the front I caught I can't see the time. night we've just ran out of card. There you go.
So I maybe we didn't get that last little no, it happened after we. yeah it was Berryessa just night four minutes left. I think it's the requires just warning you. Yeah, it's warning.
Yeah yeah, we timed it. You.
Just found about TSP this year.
I watch his videos a couple of times at once, so full of information.โค
great scoot is doing good 1.2M +
Brilliant !
wow
Guys, you both are the best))
ะะพัะตะนะบะฐ ั ะฝะตะณะพ ะพัะปะธัะฝัะน.
As far as the number of viewers you have, in my opinion, it's not about quantity. It's all about quality.
I want to thank the both of you. You guys are awesome.
Totally agree Signal path has much more details and specifics. But I like EEVblog because its got a wider range of info. You both do a great job
So I started watching the EEVblog some time ago and than the friend of mine told me to watch The Signal Path, the very first recommenden video is about both Shahriar and Dave talking about staff. How small this Earth is!
Great interview. Dave should let him speak without interrupting though, but all in all good
its awkward that shariar anwser to the camera instead to dave
respect
Shahriar could easily get millions of female subscribers if he would do beauty consulting mixed with some ASMR. And Iโm very glad he doesnโt โฆ
Thank you both for what you do!
No one can thumbs down these legends๐๐๐๐
Loved this video but screw you about the cat joke thing – you're a total ass to think kidding about hurting animals is funny
love it
Iโm sure most of us appreciate the time and effort you guys put in, honesty Iโd have to spend at least week to do a 10 minute video, Iโd be scared to death of making mistakes with so many people watching, of course mistakes will happen and it doesnโt matter, but still thatโs a lot of pressure on time to double and triple check everything… kudos!
Excellent! DC meets Daylight! ; )
I already knew that you hated Christians, but cats TOO?
Wow.. great combination! ๐
thanks for presenting this new guy, I am interested in this more advanced electronics
You guys are amazing, Thanks for all your videos!
Cannot understand why people don't watch through the entire length of the videos.
"Work two years on a project and it gets shit-canned. That's two years of my life…"
I'm hearing you, brother.
That was one reason why I left project engineering.
Two great people together…lifting spirits
Thanks for sharing. You are both interesting people. Good points ๐๐
