Hi guys, why am I in my house sitting in front of the idiot box here? Well, today is December 3rd 2013 A bit of an historic day because they're going to finally switch off the analog TV transmission that's been going since around 1956 or so. We switched over here in Australia here in Sydney Anyway, we switched over to digital TV in uh, 2001. that's when they first uh started it January 1st and I got it pretty soon after then and I've been running digital TV ever since. But yeah, they're going to finally going to switch off the analog TV Transmission in about 5 minutes time at 9:00 a.m.

here in Sydney Anyway, uh I think uh, some of the other cities follow soon after, so it's pretty historic thought I'd just record it here and um I've got I don't know what channel have I got no idea cuz I don't really use this analog uh TV anymore and um I was going to watch it on um AB C TV which is our government Channel but that's my Abc picture. Very snowy because I've got a uh log periodic digital TV antenna up there I have done for a long time so it doesn't really pick up uh, the ABC signal that? well. So I guess we'll have to, uh, watch it on one of the crappy commercial channels like this and well, I'm not going to miss the piture at all because you know, when you compare it to digital there's just no contest. it's pretty crusty, but hey, it's been my childhood uh, watching analog TV all the Thunderbirds episodes, all the Curiosity show the million times I watched Back to the Future when it was on TV all in analog and well, yeah, it's pretty crusty.

So here we go. Hopefully I'll record when they switch it off and we'll just get static it's coming up. And yes, analog art TV started out as black and white kitties. None of this color rubbish that didn't come around into Australia until about uh, 1975 I think and we didn't get our color TV at home until probably the late' 70s or something like that if I recall.

But gez that was a long time ago and apparently there's all there's According To some reports, there's still 100,000 people in Sydney who have not switched over to the digital. TV Why I Don't know, they're stubborn, they've ignored it or they just haven't. You know, uh, read uh, the papers and seen all the all the advertisements to, um, advertise the fact. But they do.

Actually Here we go on. December 3rd this analog TV service will be switched off permanently. Continue watching Nine on digital TV Need info because your TV is about to switch off in a couple of minutes. There might be a few tens of thousands of pissed off people.

Let's go and smiles of your love loving children at my warm City of Sy I Never been. This service is about to end. Can be seen by a digital television and will no longer broadcast for all TVs Please ensure you have a digital TV or digital set top box so you can continue to enjoy Channel 7 and our digital channels 72 and 7 m. For more information, call 180020 1013 or go to www.d Digital Ready.gov Thank you goodbye and that is it folks.
They did actually switch it off. someone actually sat there and uh, and you know, big flick this switch. They probably had a big cake cutting ceremony and all that sort of crap they probably rolled out. You know, Bruce Gel or whoever was the first on TV if he's still around and uh, it's all gone.

There you go, Is the OBC gone? let's have a look. don't know what? chck yet? Uh, hang on. Yep, there we go. that was working before.

that's the ABC the ABC's gone and yep, they switched it off analog TV now ceases to exist. All we're getting now is some of the cosmic background radiation from The Big Bang Fantastic Well yeah, I'm not really s it's gone, but there's probably a lot of PE uh, people are calling up there. uh TV repair person or calling up the network. What happened? Nothing's working anymore.

Goodness sake, get the times catch you next time.

The only way I could see the picture is by looking in my phone to find it on the right hand corner and

Binning my old CRT was liberating. When you move a lot those things suck quickly.

I SEE A LOT OF PEOPLE HERE SAYING

    – DIGITAL TV IS AWEFUL
    – DIGITAL TV ALWAYS PIXELATES WHEN IT RAINS

As an expert installer, i suppose this is the place to say this

Let me explain something to everyone

    1. Digital TV (if installed Correctly) is better than Analog in some ways and not in others

Pro's – (if installed correctly) it's unlikely to drop out or pixelate because IT HAS ERROR CORRECTION WORKING INSIDE OF THE TV TUNER.
Basically, Where you had Ghosting or Snow on Analog, that doesn't happen because of Reed solomon
    Error correction

Cons – The signal is a higher frequency so it DOESN'T TRAVEL AS FAR
(which is why everyone in Picton and Camden felt it ) but also why they put up the Razorback
Transmission Station, but also in the Mountains you copped it as well

    2. BY ALL MEANS SCRUTINIZE YOUR INSTALLER
LISTEN VERY CAREFULLY AND SAVE SOME MONEY AND GET GOOD SERVICE

    – Real Installers don't like Dickhead Installers, we wish they would fuck off out of the industry, but they hang on like a bad habit. They do this and charge really cheap prices (no, it's not a good thing, because you end up paying more to fix it) and you the customer, accepts it
then says the other guys are a rip off
BE REALISTIC, when someone tells you they are going to do a full installation for $100
THAT'S BULLSHIT, He cannot be a registered business with insurance, with experience
and cover the cost of parts.
THIS IS HOW THEY DO IT

    – They steal the parts and antenna's from other people's roofs
    – They have no business name or insurance
    – if they damage your property they'll jump in the van and take off

    NOW, THE CRIMINALS ASIDE

You can get in experienced guys

They will say stuff like this

= Actually , the signal is good now, but when it rains IT'S NORMAL FOR THE SIGNAL TO DROP OUT

    ACTUALLY… NOT IT'S NOT
    2 Main problems exist

    1. They have a shit meter
    2. They don't have much experience and don't really know how to fix the problem

YOU'RE PAYING FOR THIS AND THE PROBLEM IS…..
HOW CAN YOU TELL IF THEY ARE DOING THE JOB RIGHT

    ok

    ASK TO SEE THEIR METER

ASK HIM TO POINT OUT THE AMPLITUDE
(if he doesn't know what amplitude is……. you don't trust him)

the Amplitude level will be measured in dBuV (Decibel micro volts)
you want to see MIN 50 dBuV to around 80dBuV
a middle ground would be 70dBuV
if it's 40 or 45 or less THIS IS NOT GOOD

Now you check the QUALITY of the signal
it's called PRE B.E.R. sometimes written as PRE VITERBI
the figure will look something like this
    2.46 E-03
    3.21 E-06
    4.28 E-04

there will generally only be 2 numbers that look like this
one will end in E- (something under 8)
and the other will look like this
    0.00 E-08

you are not concerned really with the first part
but the part after the "E"

    CHEAT SHEET

E-01 Absolutely shit signal (no signal)
    E-02 Shit Signal, Pixelation
E-03. Good Picture ONLY IN GOOD WEATHER

E-04 THIS IS THE MINIMUM SIGNAL YOU SHOULD ACCEPT BEFORE PAYING HIM
E-05 You're laughing, you have good signal even if it hails
E-06 You're laughing harder because your signal is bullet proof so to speak
E-07 You're showing off about how awesome your signal is
E-08 You are withing maybe 5% of all people in sydney who actually have a signal this good

    so… BEFORE YOU PAY HIM
    ASK TO SEE
    AMPLITUDE
    Should be above 50dBuV

    PRE BER
    should be E-04 or higher
E-03 IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH EVEN IF YOU SEE A GOOD PICTURE ON YOUR SCREEN
    (and you will)

    If you do this
YOU FORCE HIM TO DO THE JOB PROPERLY BECAUSE HE WANTS TO GET PAID
YOU FORCE HIM TO BUY A GOOD METER
Instead of buying the cheapest shit he can find for $800

    METERS TO AVOID
    RANGEROVER
    PROMAX
    COMBOLOOK
ANTSIG (bunnings bullshit) Avoid at all costs
if it's a handheld with a TV Screen (fuck it off)

if it has LED's in a row to tell the strength (fuck it off) Absolutely Useless

SATKING (the latest ebay jobbies that are absolutely fucked)
    they look good and impressive
they are usually around $200 and ARE NOT ACCURATE
(these things will say E-05 when it's really E-02)

HERE ARE SOME ACCEPTABLE GOOD METERS

    UNAOHM AP-01
    UNAOHM AP-01 HD
    UNAOHM AP-201
and basically any Unaohm Meter (these things are $5,000 – $8,000)

    ROVER HD TAB 700
(Generally ROVER is a shit brand, However the HD TAB700 is a good meter)
if a technician has this meter you know 2 things about him

HE IS VERY LIKELY A FOXTEL TECHNICIAN
HE IS LOOKING TO MAKE MONEY ON THE SIDE OUTSIDE OF FOXTEL
Regular Installers generally do not use Rover as we know the history ,
Foxtel Techs are FORCED as part of their van Audit to have the Rover meter

As opposed to the Unaohm which requires more manual input and a person
TO ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND HOW TO USE A METER MANUALLY
    the Rovers are more automated

but at least when a rover tells you PRE BER is E-04 You know that's correct

    SO GUYS IN SUMMARY
    DON'T GET RIPPED OFF
    DO THE FOLLOWING

    – Don't ask him for ID (You're kinda being a dickhead if you do)

    – Don't be afraid to watch what he's doing.
don't hang over his shoulder like a hawk but in saying that you can say
    "You don't mind if i watch ?"
IF HE COMPLAINS… GET RID OF HIM

    – Before he starts the work
Politely ask "Do you have insurance up to $10 Million ?"
Any Tech worth their salt will have this and we are proud to admit it.
if you don't, you'll avoid the question in which case GET RID OF HIM POLITELY

You don't need to ask him for PROOF OF INSURANCE (that's going a bit far) but , if he's young and looks in experienced, i would. if he looks confident take him on his word (because you can later always tell teh cops that he lied)

    – ASK HIM… ARE YOU A REGISTERED CABLER ?
by all means…. ASK TO HIS CABLERS REGISTRATION
it'll be in his wallet next to his drivers licence
Feel free to note down the number on the back
There's nothing wrong with doing this
IF HE HAS A PROBLEM WITH IT… GET RID OF HIM

    so….
    if he's a cabler
    Registered business
    Has Insurance
    and Cablers Registration
    sure, go head with him

    and then

Confirm signal amplitude FROM THE WALL POINT
    Confirm Signal PRE BER

IF YOU DO THAT AND TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS
IT FORCES THE SHIT GUYS OUT OF THE INDUSTRY
AND YOU DON'T GET SCAMMED BY SOMEONE THAT YOU TRUSTED
    THAT THEN FUCKED YOU

    YOU'RE WELCOME

    Any questions….. Ask !
