Bad Product Design 101:
How to screw up your product with a simple design oversight.
The IDEAL brand 61-342 looked like a nice multimeter until Dave tried to actually use it and discovered an epic product design FAIL!

This is not a hundred dollar multimeter, these dmms are
just around 20 dollars.
Large companies import these low cost Chinese meters and put there own brands and selling these at
much higher costs.
I had to test this same problem on my own made in China multimeter right away -affortunately pass the test
I can't believe this guy, this is the dumbest thing I've ever seen on YouTube. Are you a kid, clueless like Kelly Bundy? All you have to do when the meter is standing is put all your fingers except your thumb behind it and, and, wait for it, press the button with your thumb. Why would you press the button with your pointer finger? YOU'RE the Epic Fail, not the multimeter.. smh
No wonder!!!!! it's not an expensive FLUKE!!!!!!!
Just came across this video. Try pulling the stand out until it snaps into position. It really is just that
simple.
Maybe it's your desk that sucks Dave.
Sometimes it's like someone is paying you to talk bullshit, because it doesn't suit an intelligent person like you are. Or are you not that intelligent to realize that sometimes you are kind of passing a certain limit.
I have had an IDEAL brand multimeter for a few years. About a month ago it just stopped turning on. After probing around it with my O-scope I think the processor may have just died.
and the cute onscreen text made it all youtubey
And they also need to start selling the fuses for multimeters WHERE THEY SELL MULTIMETERS.
Buying fuses online gets real old real fast.
My Ideal cat III multimeter does the exact same thing. They need to put the buttons on the bottom or have the stand fold out further…
lol
@NoSurrenderX25
No dude. you are generalizing. My fluke NEVER gets leaned up against something else. It stands freely on its stand, every time. That's that point of it. If you think having to lean your meter against something makes sense then your're a certified fool ๐
Hahahahahaaaaahgahahahahahaha! It's shit.
seen just about all your blogs…
Im surprised there are people here who disagree with you when you clearly have a passion for multimeter and as far as im concerned you are the master of meters. I can only hope that as a job you design multimeters to be honest.
Thank you for all the wonderful videos you have posted (and i was very impressed with your clock lag idea (the under water dataloggers)). I shall be attending warwick uni to do EE soon and i shall advise you as a good reference ;D!!!!!!!
this video really got the trolls going didnt it lololol
@joerideman Good explanation. Regardless of who designed it, obviously no one bothered to test it with the buttons standing up. Or if they did, they didn't care that it was unstable. For those who claim I'm being picky and it doesn't matter, watch my follow up video where I compare it to 20 other meters. None of them fall over, but this one does. Fail.
@ecco88 There is a thin line between a designer and an engineer. In any case the designer task is to implement the usability, interaction and looks as defined by the cliรซnt.
But the looks of a device will tell the user how to use it. So if this meter falls over it is a Bad design. It made the user think it could operate the device in a standing position.
@TimeForTimer This was't a review. Check out my $100 multimeter shootout.
Douche review is the real fail..
@NoSurrenderX25 Seriously, people, THAT'S your complaint? Can we get more complacent and spoiled these days? I agree that it's common sense. It probably says in the manual even that the easel is to make viewing easier if you so choose to use it, but if you're going to push the stinkin' buttons, then hold the damn thing or prop it down, it's not that difficult. This product is freakin' amazing compared to something that would be Chinese-made that would have electrical mistakes galore!
@comsoft On the opposite, if a cheap Chinese company will have a bad soldering and 8 hour battery, i can close my eyes, i cannot expect too much from a cheap meter. but from a company like Agilent which you pay for the brand name, you expect MUCH MUCH more , especially on the quality side. So to see a product from this company with a bad soldering quality, is THE reason to give a THUMB down!!!
