I too am hopeless at getting those HANGOUT things to work. Though my nephew has it sorted, I'm to proud to ask for help!!.
I'll think I'll just get back to building to electronic projects – and hope they work.

Group chat is for within the hangouts, this is different from the chat that's on the live stream. You'll need to load the live stream Youtube page and pause the video to have a chat with your users.
Then you can chat/pass links between your participants without alerting the public.
All of the public chat content is lost when it's posted to Youtube, like a live stream.
Hangout toolbox is useful and It's also been known for hangout invites to take days sometimes to arrive. So you've best to send an instant message or plan ahead.
