We're here with Tim from the Uni of New South and he's going to tell us all about Eve Eve is her name, it is a she. It is she who who decided it was a she thing that we write and let's go over here and have a look. Tally's who I used to work for. but let's not go there.

yep and it probably out him sticker on it somewhere. and maybe definitely okay. So I've worked. Ok, so I've worked for two companies and solar panels all over it.

Tell us about the solar panels first. so there's about one kilowatt solar panels. Watch our time. They're just plain mono crystalline, right? Yep, Okay, between the we've got three strings Yep, the car that's just such an awkward shape or the curve in order to get the maximum efficiency.

Read this book. Yeah, got it. And how did you find the curve on the top affected the efficiency while you were driving right from our data line. And so if you take a step back, you can see that normally when the opposition.

yep, there's kind of more area on the back right. Of course it's working north when you're going south for. that does help us way down. so you deliberately actually go from Darwin South because of that is that one other orbit.

We'd like to say that, but if you come up with the rules, say we're gonna go from downtown. Okay, I'm going to go check out the wheels. Can you tell us about the wheels? These? It'd be super low friction, right? Oh yeah, so they're about 98% efficient. All right? There are brushless DC motor originally developed by the CSIRO and now man, you've got a company.

What brand and what affects the efficiency of a wheel like that are sort of. The biggest thing is we have losses in the inductive horses in the coils. Yep, of course for we get around that. who's there such who's had a wide open I could show you it's a whole of the coils.

twenty poles. In order to find out who sharp they donate to have enough production for the motor controls, right? We actually have these boxes which to do nothing else. Yep, then just provide that a little bit of extra low right? And what's what? What have we got here for those problems? They're made by coming for Tritium base out in Queensland right? And they do mostly. They kind of got two businesses one is us, so Solar power rights and they are doing a lot of electric vehicle.

Thanks down. So these guys take the 150 or so volts DC from the battery and look, you got space to luggage. Oh yes, so they actually take your a bit. you would have a car following you right? We have a booth time plate and an entire fleet and this is one of the battery packs.

ISM Yep, so this is three about us about the battery there: NCR 18 650 So they're manufactured by Famous Sonic Cells. Yep, these are actually from our 2013 battery pack. Oh okay, right. so this is not the recent one as it is has it improved.

I See a temperature sensor there? Yep. So in between since this barrier is manufactured, think they care about the 1860 15 BS Right on. So they're slightly higher capacity and so we've built up that much the same. So it's actually these are actually gold-plated PCBs Yep.
so we've soldered nickel strips onto the back of them and then welded it into nice these modules about 30 I Want to say 35 live, but quite me. 35 of these are shells in in each one parallel. Yeah, then we have I Think it's very 16 series right? and do you have to get those as matched types from the same batch or something like that? Or yes, that gives actually a big challenge in this year's race. As we were driving into our Springs yeah, the way the race works is you get two charts to child is one Guinea in Darwin and we are half way down to Alice Springs So we're about four o'clock on I think a 2-0 Wednesday Amy We're driving in and we're monitoring the charge data my batteries If you have a big series pack, it's a very importantly keep all the cells roughly the same voltage.

As we were coming into our spring, we noticed that looking quite close to the bottom for the try to discharge gives much energy out before we have charge again. One set of cells have actually just tried to go to point 2 point 3 volts more. the other ones all right. Which ordinary is in a problem but we're running them right down to the bottom.

Yep. I Want to say beef decays out from our spring? We can't push this any low look and so we opened up battery and luckily for us it was one of the models in the very front AHA so you could access it right. the way is about seven or eight leaves, all right, very front. Yep in about 10 minutes we got soaring eyes out right, just bypassed it.

nice and you just kept on going. kept on going. didn't write it something and you won. Oh well, kinda how does it work.

So when it we this is a Challenger fire. sorry it crews a class car. The difference between conventional the past 20 years solar cars. A ton of beam solar cells on a wing with the look Yeah right? This is the idea of this kind of competition is make something looks a lot more like a car.

So there's two main components, one of which is the actual race. so how fast you going down the left and the other is quite a power times 30 across Alive? Yep, but unfortunately lost out on points this year, right? Okay, but this did hold the world record at one point. Oh you're not. Yes, it is a solar car, but if your record for the fastest electric car over 500 minutes.

Yep. so it started about 100 Nine? Nice 500k. Wow Yep, that's impressive and you show us the front the spirit. Yes, let's go inside, look through LEDs Oh yes and hoppy and you might have to take the steering wheel out.

Riders this? Yeah, All right. Bit of a tight squeeze. Yeah, you got racing seats and everything. Look at this.

We're very proud of the guy. Yeah, yes, son. swing yeah. Got your own sons with logo on there and tell us about the dash here so you can see.
it's just PCB with all of the LEDs and it's all now. It talks to one connector, right? That's a can line that runs throughout the entire cast and everything that happens gets put on that and this guy. just listen to all the messages and displays. That has a neat thing, right? Yep.

Change queue for you. Fortunately, we don't actually have the big battery pack in the castle's right. You can see that's sweet and you're using that that knob there changed yeah and you've got it in KZ Now you should have done in miles an hour and at an 88. So that's Eve 2015 Yes, is the VIN number actually in 2013 as well, right? Okay, that year it did come actually first across the line right Again, lose out on the point system since for the 2015 race we redid the time here here.

Enjoy! So I thought what's the weight? How much does it weigh? It weighs down to 300 kilos 300. You start knowing things like the driver either driver. Yeah, so do chief. So you have to choose the skinniest we vs driver you can find.

Unfortunately the rules dictate that the driver waive 80 kilos and they must weigh 80. So say so. You have to get a Sim pretty solid person too so you can get anyone that you want and then you put sandbags in as well and Keysight sponsors as well. And how its aerodynamically was it tested in like a wind tunnel or anything like that or mostly mostly simulation? Yep, you want to try it.

Feeling the pressure? Honey, register this and their legal path. I Was going to say what do you have to go through to get it Road legal? A lot A lot. I Always got like one of them. Yeah so we have.

They're usually the nice polycarbonate yep curved shield but that's windscreen is a little bit of water. Yep, we used to have again have a nice polycarbonate rice cream but there is no way to get that registered at all. So we had to actually get this cut out. So how did you drive it on the road? Did the competition get special? Yes for the competition, your eyes.

They get a special special permit for the contest and there. but you have to share the road, right? You'll share the road. It's out. They'll see your little 300 kilo car.

Hundred ton road trades great. And what's the energy consumption Over here? It's got the energy consumption sticker. 115 watt hours per kilo meter? zero of course. Well, it depends where your charge batteries from.

Yeah, So how does it work? Are you all that when you start? Are you allowed to pre charge a pack? Start? Yes, You say fully charge? Uh, start with a fully charged battery right? and then you can charge again. You know. Springs coming in to charge? Yep, that is entirely of the song and they said, is there any limits to how much how much battery capacity you can put into it or the different types of cells in. in terms of the rules, So physical light is the maximum path you can have.
Yeah, right. work out to be about 50 kilowatt hours. Oh okay, got it. and was there a maximum number? Sell it like a solar capacity you could put on it along there to main cluster sale which is silicon.

you can have believed up six meter squared. Yep. and then gallium. You can have up to three.

Okay, so unfortunately, if you can, we can't afford gallium cells. Yep, Yep. we've got. How much were what? How much more expensive our gallium cells compared to these? If we wanted to put gallium cells on the table, we pretty much have to pay everything again.

All right they're very they use on the things like this is s yep very good. Yeah yeah of course of course once all cells anywhere else, no worries. All right, thank you very much. Tim That is awesome! Excellent and you're building a new one at the moment.

Yes, we're designing the 2017. Rover Fantastic! Well I'll have to come visit. Excellent, fantastic face. Tim You.

I wonder what the solar cell encapsulation layering is like, in order to protect them and not lose to much efficiency in the protective outer layer?

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars skeetorkiftwon says:

Real question is: How many 90's civics could you have made with the fossil fuel energy used to make this, and how far could you have driven them? At least a dozen for years and years. Ockham's razor.

Hard to watch full screen with the shaky camera (phone?). Please use a real camera next time with image stabilization. Interest though.

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars JONOVID says:

if it can hold more than just the driver , has a good turning radius, you can get 100ks out of it, and costs less than an electric scooter . i will buy one
