Hi Welcome to everyone's favorite segment My ol' Bag! I Don't actually have too many on the shelf compared to the backlogs I've had recently, so this won't be like 20 items or something so it might actually be a bit shorter. Anyway, let's get straight into it. Thank you very much entry and a little bit about Anthony Fitzpatrick he's from Western Australia WI So I don't mind Western Australian Viewers a hard case Tech Tools Tektronix Huh? There's a note. Yep, the sponge has completely deteriorated.

Ah yep, ah whoa. Anyway, what is this? I have not seen this before. It's a tech RFM 90 Signal Mini Beauty. Check it out! Tektronix RFM 90 Signal Mini It's an RF TV antenna signal strength meter.

Basically, check it out made in Spain Hi to all my Spanish viewers. Does this mean that it's actually not a bit of Tektronix kit and they've just rebadged it from someone else I think that's very likely anyway. um I can't really find much info on this thing I Got the specs from an eBay ad so there was some press release on Tektronix website, but you had to login or some like that I don't know. but anyway, yeah, I think it could be a rebadged I Suspect this is interesting.

Actually uses a Nokia Mobius it Amin 100 mobile phone battery or cellular phone. That's rather interesting. They designed it around an existing mobile phone battery. Well, not a bad idea actually.

Anyway, so the whole idea is that you go to somebody's house with this and they've got TV problems. You plug it in to the antenna. You might even go up on the roof and plug it directly in. So you get as little loss as possible, a little cable loss as possible, and you tune in the channels you want and it will tell you the RF our signal strength and you know there'd be our standards for that.

Of course, what a sort of minimum signals or a decent signal strengths required to get reasonable footage in a particular area. But it's all changed now. This was back in the old analog days and got headphones here. did decodes the audio.

You can probably listen to it. Alright, so let's crack this thing open very quickly. A little belt clip came off there and we're in like Flynn Check it out. Do we have any manufacturer markings? because I don't think this is a bit of Tektronix kit.

Bingo! We found the manufacturer. Pro Max PR X Double O for double O for A that doesn't register anything on Google So yeah, but pro max Definitely the original manufacturers are these things. Very interesting construction. How they've done this: charging connector on the bottom, the interface connector.

Whatever it is, it's like it's got a separate board down in there and it's They've sold it along here to make the contacts. I Don't get it. They've done it for strength reasons I would suggest. but yeah, that's it's.

rather interesting. Anyway, they've got the why not just mount it directly on the board and have It a right angle connector and have the physical and rely on the physical mounts on the connector. I Don't get it anyway. Um, I'm very interesting.
We've got ourselves some big-ass looking relays there. Check those puppies out how they are if relays, no, they wouldn't be on the top board. No, they're just a joke. Blogs are small signal relay which is it's doing a lot of switching though.

Very interesting construction how this is all packaged together and even the relays there on little bored going off here and look this shielded on the bottom so they're obviously doing some important signal switching. but no, hang on I stand corrected. that's where that look. that's the antenna connector there.

so they're actually using that as an antenna switching relay. so that's interesting. and yeah, well. what different attenuation ranges for the input antenna input? perhaps? Anyway, there's the input.

There's yeah. Put gun in there RF Can Oh I know you RF aficionados want to see inside the can. You always do little coils. They're not waxed down at all to hold them in place.

Hang on. There's a big fat ROM here. but where's the micro? Is it a ROM Well, I think that could be a pre program micro. It must be because there's nothing else there that I can see.

So label off. And if we lift the Kilt on this thing here, we go 60 MST 60 225 and that is a massively obsolete 8-bit mass ROM micro. Actually, the date code on that is 99. So there you go.

That's as in 1999. We're gonna party like it's 1999. Um, so this is. It's a relatively modern in the scheme of things, but the design is probably ancient and this probably had like a 10 year product lifespan or something like that.

so wouldn't surprise me if this was developed in the late 80s or early 90s. So anyway, thank you very much. Anthony that was more than a two minutes tear down. All right signal strength meter.

cool. Next up, we have one from the United States of America Robert Frank Yeah, I'm not gonna try and pronounce it from Lancaster California Don't think I've heard of Lancaster California before I Know all my Californian viewers love California It's probably the closest thing America's Got to Australia like in terms of weather culture. especially same friend San Fran's actually a sister city if you didn't know. Anyway, we've got documentation: An Emerson compact CD Radio thingamabob two minute 10m Now this thing this: Emerson stereo clock radio CD player wake to your favorite CD track need I'm sure that was neat back in the day anyway.

Um, this is interesting. Robert says it's a varies says it's a haunted radio. Of course, there is no such thing as haunted. there's just engineering.

It has developed an interesting unique follows: become an FM transmitter I Guess he got tired of just receiving it. Transmits a weird signal around 95.1 Meg right after being plugged in, including two pictures of the spectrum captured with his software-defined radio and recorded audio. A very weak waveform. Anyway, it's spooky.
There you go, thank you very much. Robert And sure enough, here's the spectrum. Ninety Five Point One Megahertz and it's transmitting something. So what's going on there I Would suspect is that the that would be the local oscillator of course.

plus the IFR frequency for fifty-five kilohertz. Usually that's the audio tone. What else? we got there? Yeah, got ourselves a spectrum. That's the audio spectrum.

So yes, that would be my guess is that the local oscillator I Don't know why it's transmitting. Um, some fire inside? I'm not exactly sure, but then it must have a local oscillator in there. Um, local oscillator plus the ire. So I that would be that would be my guess.

Anyway, 2002 vintage and sure enough, check it out. I've just got the input to the spectrum analyzer here just intertwined with the antenna. the FM antenna on this thing. and sure enough, look at that.

that is Huge. That's minus 20 DB M at Ninety Five Point five Meg Or there abouts Wow Jumping around like a jackrabbit - and there's a hundred megahertz span on the puppy Wow That is terrible. What's going on there? anyone got any thoughts? I I Don't think it's like yeah, we're not gonna see anything interesting in a two minute tear down, but that is fascinating. If anyone's ever seen a failure mode like that in an FM radio, let us know, because sure enough, that thing is damn well transmitted in at quite a reasonable power.

Alright, you know I Couldn't resist two minute teardown. It's typical construction that you'd find in something like this. single sided PCB Of course they've got a Toshiba and a beer Toshiba tuna in there and well, no, actually that would be a tushy. that'll be Toshiba ramp I me tunas going to be around here.

There's all the wax I was talking about before for the coils. there's how AM receive a ferrite rod and hanging off the end there a bit loosey-goosey and yeah, the troubles gonna be in there somewhere I don't know what, but hmm. it's basically bugger all in. The rest of it got a regular trenny in there to power the thing and the CD mechanisms.

just you know, it's just bugger all really. Geez. I Put that on a vibration mount. I'm surprised in such a cheap-ass thing, but um, yeah, obviously it was either absolutely required to make it work or the gild the lily just a tad.

There's actually a lot of parts that go into a little bedside clock radio like this thing, but they churn them out. You know, cheapest chips in China But yeah. anyway, if anyone's got any clue about how this is turned into a pretty crappy transmitter at the presumably at there that's a local oscillator doing it. Ah, please let us know.

And for those playing along at home, there is the tushy by a part number. I'll try and link in the datasheet if I can hide a wall. My Norwegian viewers in particular I go hard. just Stilson from yeah, No way I'm fantastic If I get too many from Norway let's crack this one open and see what we've got.
It's another spoiler alert. Another broken electronics broken electronics usually means two minutes I am did an Irish components Boxster they have Irish components in Norway um bread yet two minute teardown? Cool. All right. Double wraps for our protection Red Red Red What? Guess I should read the note.

it's a battery charger used for first a second-generation professional red digital cinema cameras yes, aren't very expensive stuff I Thought might be interesting to see the design decisions. Okay, right like yeah, like a portable field thing because it's got carry handle on it and presumably oh yeah, right, you plug the red battery on the back. sorry I'm not I've never played with a red camera. presume it's got a massive ass battery pack.

it looks big and you plug it in there. innit Oh Oh two of them, you can have one either side. Alright, interested. for two minutes, head out.

two minutes. hair down on this red lithium-ion battery charger. Not gonna be a huge amount in it. Um, in fact I don't even see temperature sensing, but it's obviously done inside the cell.

Look at the Moldy contacts down in there, so man, it'll just have a power supply and a lithium-ion charger chip in it. Just one of the many off-the-shelf charge. The chips will be my guess. Anyway, it is mains powered so that's pretty cool.

It's a Is it already? It's already open? It's already open. Ah, already had a crack at it. There we go. Whoa.

I Can see what's a big current shunt resistors down in their hardware? Okay, someone's tested. Ok, the hardware is ok. Electrolytic cap there. You can actually see thee.

That's not a solid electrolyte in there because you can see the pressure vent mark on there. Hopefully you can see that on the camera. anyway. A couple of relays down there for switch in.

What's their chipset? Whoa. that's intelligent. Looks like it's got a micro down in there. Mm-hmm Another bunch of current shunt resistors down in there and it looks quite reasonable.

It's got the requisite, got some protection and filtering on the input. There's our main rectifier cap what brand and we're looking at the begin there. That's a I saw a Panasonic Caps good brand and what else we got on the Oh up. Nothing on the underside.

Oh those joints look pretty how you doing. Look at those Wow dry as a dead dingos donger. Know if we get in there under the microscope? but yeah, is that like just that lead-free but I don't know. looks pretty crusty or is it just the flux? Maybe I could clean it up and it might look a bit better.

but yeah, I don't doesn't instill a lot of confidence really. Oopsie, Check out the bhaji little transformer tap coming off there. Wow, that's yeah, that's a bit. How are you doing as well? We've got ourselves a pic18 F Series for you Pic fanboys I won't like are they using that to do the custom control? we and I would have expected just an off-the-shelf lithium-ion charger I See, they say this is much more advanced than what I expected.
Let me tell you, and there's lots of current shunt resistors everywhere. Well, nope. I Don't see any other dedicated little traditional lithium ion off-the-shelf charger chip on there, so there it looks like they're doing it. They custom implemented it in the pic Wow That is fascinating.

They've really gilded the Lily in terms of the engineering wired to charge a lithium-ion battery. I Mean there's off-the-shelf chips, you could have just had a power supply and off-the-shelf chip which handles everything and Bob's your uncle. But now all these current sense resistors are all doing stuff. lots of protection.

And yeah, they really seem to be charging this very cautiously and I can only presume that this big guard Dale five watt resistor here is for discharging the battery as well. so maybe they get some. you know charge characterization, charge/discharge cycles that can characterize you know how much capacity is left in the battery and stuff like that would be my guess. Anyway, that's interesting that's inside a red battery.

Chat with Iam on battery charger. Much more complicated than you'd expect. another one from the United States of America from Tempe Arizona All my viewers in Tempe just Arizona in particular I've been to Arizona seen a meteor crater in Arizona didn't quite get to Winslow though hit Anyway, look at that. oh look at the case.

Geez, this is okay. so that's a charger thing. Oh, that's cigarette lighter Otto Shaver it says I guess it is an auto shaver Wow Oh, this thing is ancient. What is this dog doing better? Read the note.

John is an E student from Phoenix Arizona Hi to all my viewers in Phoenix Yeah, big fan of your channel, particularly mailbag. Everyone loves. It's everyone's favorite segment. After seeing all the cool and crazy stuff he thought he'd send in some cool and crazy stuff.

Anyway, this second item is an Alec try Pop. It's a porcelain electrical splitter manufactured in the 1930s. What it is? Look, it's just it's a basement. Double adapters we'd call it here or a triple adapter and a one of them is a bit loosey-goosey but the electro-pop I Think there you go I mean it's for all you trademark registered I Like try Pop for all you history buffs all you collectors out there.

Wow And this is a travel Ectric auto shaver. Charger is designed upright between twelve and fourteen point five volts. There you go for service. See any radio repairman? Anyway, Funky taste for it.

There's the output. this crack it open Wow Check it out. It's a mechanical vibrator. Look at that mechanical vibrator inverter designed to generate a hundred and twenty volts.
that American Rubbish. Out of course there's a one. MFD Now this micro. None of this micro Muse symbol.

Rubbish. Good old MFD Yes one. MFD for all you were non old school people, is one microfarad. That's how they used to write micro farad back in the day.

Anyway, it's a mechanical vibrator that steps up the twelve volts. I converts the twelve volts DC from the car battery into 120 volts Ac Pretty crusty from the mechanical vibrator. Terrific. It's so loud if you want to co get my high-speed die camera on this a thousand frames per second.

So if you want to see this in a thousand frames per second um yeah, hopefully I'm and go over to my Eevblog two channel and I'll show you thank you very much. Colby Neuman from parts unknown in the United States sounds like a wrestler unknown and we have it shows a full banger. Check it out! This is the APF Mark 25 memory with wood paneling. Okay, imitation wood paneling for bang a calculator.

Oh goodness, it turns on. but yeah, it doesn't seem to be doing that well. Hmm. One sick puppy made in the United States of America 1975.

Yep, where's the nipple I Want to play off the nipple? There it is down there. Whoa. Love the nipple. There's something that's sadly lacking these days.

a diagram of the actual chip, the physical orientation of it on the silkscreen. bloody Ripper I've got one from the old art from Nudie K&I v. Capital T Hatton Garden n Fight pommie viewers, let's have a look. We do like PCBs and looks like we have some proto boys.

Let's check them out. We have yet another prototyping board, but this one's substantially more than meets the eye here. This is the router board by Nifty I Don't know how to pronounce that Anyway, look at their individual. It's like a matrix board.

Okay, but then it has these individual traces coming off. They're not actually going anywhere. You have to bridge them over with a with a solder and then you can actually connect these. Kind of like an FPSO.

Think of it like an FPGA matrix kind of, you know, cell kind of matrix. So this one can go to the one next to it if at once. I can go to one there. but it could also go diagonally as well.

So you can actually join up pins diagonally like that. And it's It's rather fascinating how good it is in practice I don't know I'd have to actually try you I have to save that for a different video. But not only is it interesting from that respect, yes, it's registered trademark and blah blah blah all that sort of jazz, but it's and it's also a Kickstarter as well. and well, you can actually buy it I think the Kickstarter is over.

The other interesting thing is if it comes with its own router or description language, you can actually use a language to actually design your routes on here. And it comes with this awesome looking visual editing software that you can presumably do the programming language in import and export and then manually tweak it and things like that in the software. It's ie. for effort on this one, whether or not it you know is really useful in practice.
as I said, I don't know, but it's probably the most interesting protoboard we've seen to date. I'll link it in down below. Check it out. Tell you what though there's one thing I absolutely hate is the black solder mask.

may if I hold it up like this I don't know I've got my can't see it very good on the camcorder LCD You can see the tracers going up there diagonally just you can see them going over. but the black solder mask just. it's just. it's frustrating you can't see the traces underneath.

Don't like it I Don't want my Swedish viewers Karoli Simon from assume units back the front may not be I'm Simon Corolla Krolyi Simon thank you very much from Lens Corona or something in Sweden. Cool. Alright, actually. okay.

yep, there we go. A little dongle Integra fuse a little USB fuse even line electronic fuse. Let's check it out and this is the Integra Fuse. a USB dual production device that makes it possible enable/disable data comms which can be used to protect private data when charging a phone tablet.

If you're paranoid about that sort of stuff, Big Brother is watching. Remember that I'm also A they're not only watching, but they're logging everything also. a Our power fuse functions implemented five current threshold levels to choose between and there is like you might think, well, okay, how does it work? Okay, there's our symbols and there's our little table on the back and presumably is that number of flashes I don't know one two. Anyway, it does, but teeny-weeny itty bitty switch on the side? Well, I'll tell you what I can't make heads or tails of the mode thing here.

it's I think ice maybe set something but I don't ya get it? Maybe I don't know Maybe I need to RTFM or something Anyway, I Looked at the IndieGoGo campaign there's like 15 days left but it says that like there's no description anymore. It's got a joke video and just saying. it's not possible to order it anymore. So I thought, no, what the hell's going on with this project anyway I'll link it in down below.

Actually, the ones here. this one's been sitting here for ages. sorry - somebody in the UK um yeah, this one. let's have a look.

it is an orange pie one because yes, I complains quite some time ago before I got my orange pie ones that I couldn't get it I was having problems getting out Aliexpress they sent me one thank you very much Brian Dori and has also sent some stuff they sell on their website. a B Electronics Coded Co dot Uk' let's check them out and Brian from Abe Electronics Co Uk does these prototyping boards. He's a Raspberry Pi prototyping board. It's got one of those extender headers with it.
Yep, well, we've got two. What's that? a little extender? Peter Not sure what's going on there anyway. a breakout Raspberry Pi zero board and other little headers and things like that. So I'll link them in.

down below. they've got a Raspberry Pi - GPIO port and thanks for the orange pie. I'll add it to my cluster. Oops, sorry I opened this one off camera I've had this for quite some time I Thought it was like a double delivery or something because we've seen this before.

So digital and Analog Discovery - and we've seen that before. but I just remembered the previous one so that was like the National Instruments branded version of the analog. Discovery - this is the Digital Net branded one, but they didn't just send that, they sent the some of those power bricks that Wave Arts seen before. Those are the library board power bricks.

They're very cool so they come in handy. We've got Ap mod a measure your circuit impedence over an ice quincy interface. That could be interesting, so take a quick look at that the interface board and this is they've got like an analogue. A digi went analog parts kit so it's pretty good.

Got a smallish Britt Oh a long thin breadboard. Okay, it hasn't got the top strips on it and a whole bunch of parts. I could be really useful. Now this is actually really cool.

For 65 bucks you can get this digital and analog parts kit. and here's all the stuff in it. For those playing along at home, they've got instrumentation ants. they got, you know, precision Op amps.

They've got voltage reference 85 84 They've got magnetic field sensors, current shop monitors, accelerometers, microphone IR transmitter, piezo temperature sensor, all sorts of fantastic stuff. So let's take a quick squeeze inside this puppy and look at this. Beautiful yeah, that's not. that's anti-static that's not conductive, so that's not the best way to store those anyway.

I've done a whole video on that. Hmm. Anyway, we've got these like a regulator's down in there or transistors. I'm not sure.

You get some LEDs caps, electrodes, resistors, and a partial breadboard. doesn't have the power strips top and bottom and all the a lot of the chips on surface in surface mount package like the accelerometer for example I'm not sure if that that maybe looks like an accelerometer there that looks like a microphone is it? is it mounted on the bottom? It's got a hole in it? mmm I don't know. Anyway, I'm SMD parts and they've put those already populated onto the SMD to dip converter and you get one of these funky digi lint slash National Instruments screwdrivers which are very very handy and I saw some big power is this? Don't look at that. 6.2 ohms thank you very much and a whole bunch of jumper wires that is a neat kid.

I Really really like that. I'll link it in down below if you want to know it. Tell you what. I Really like the idea of this.
measure your circuits impedance over an I squared C interface and it uses a real funky chip down a little devices ad 5933 Not only it's an and it's an impedance converter. Not only does it contain the ADA a 12 bit one makes sample or 12 bit ADC but it's got a DDS signal generator in there and in DSP our processing which does the Fourier transforms and efforts it is beautiful. I'm really really interested in this chip. I might have to do a project on that.

It's very cool anyway. Um, it's all integrated. It's one little board Oh aunt do you know it's yeah, the board itself. It's basically the analog devices chip on a board.

comes with some cables and you can um, measure clock and complex impedances from a hundred ohms to ten me with the De Street Knit Discrete Fourier Transform DFT Performed again at the Analog Devices chip Neat. Linked down below on these rails and there it is. there's the other one. there's a slave version.

There's several ways to design an LCR meter, but the technique I chose for this is the voltage and current measurement technique. Basically, you are feed a fixed frequency into the device under test and you measure the voltage and the current and the phases. and from that from those basic measurements, you can calculate everything and stick with me with me here. But here's the technique.

I've got the newer version pre-soldered RoutaBoards and just want to say how fantastic I think they are! I don't think I'd ever use the software, although I have played with it out of curiosity, and I appreciate the effort that went into it. Still, this is, far and away, the most useful proto-board I've ever had the pleasure of building with. The manufacturing quality is top notch. I find they're even better for SMT than those shitty checkerboard PCBs you can get. SOIC and chip carrier packages fit perfectly, but anything smaller than 1.27 mm, and you're out of luck (not that you'll find boards like these that are so flexible in the first place). I really hope they catch on more. As you can see, I cannot recommend them highly enough.
