Dave looks at possibly the world's most dangerous consumer product, a portable electrode boiler based water heater available on ebay.
Marketed as "safe", it is nothing less than a death trap!
EDIT: Holy crap! They sell this as a baby bath heater!

Hi. Check this out. I think I Found the world's most dangerous consumer product. Tada! Somebody sent this into my mailbag segment.

Yes, it's a mains cord connected into some sort of probe thing. Hmm, thank you very much the person who sent this one in. No, it's not one of these USB hole warmers that was seen before on the mailbag where you plug them in the USB port and stick them up a hole and it warms things up. I'm sure they're just fine.

No, it's this thing. It's a portable immersion electric element for heating up water. I'm going to show you why this is the most dangerous consumer product possible. Let's go.

So this is a portable immersion jug element basically designed to heat up water. and you'll notice that it's all plastic, right? It's not like as some sort of insulated ceramic heater element that you typically find you know, inside a in an electric jug or something like that and you can probably see down in there. Look, there's metal plates. There's metal plates down in there.

Oh Connected directly up to a mains cord. Let's measure it. Now caught into the eBay page. This is a 500 watt electric immersion heater, so it should have an element in there.

Wow No, it doesn't. It doesn't measure anything at all. But what it does do, let's stick one probe on there and one probe on there. Look, it's connected directly to the mains pin and the other one is connected directly to the other plate.

That's all it is is the mains cord connected directly to to internal plates. It's an electrolysis device for heating water. You've got to be kidding me. And here's the actual card it comes with with.

look, just stick it into a jug there. no worries whatsoever. and it's all in Chinese For those who can read: Chinese but I've actually translated the one in red here and we can see this. This product is available in pots, buckets, cups, beakers, submerged and generates power dissipation.

Not submerge part does not produce power consumption ie. no heat. Do you take it out? It's just two plates. It doesn't need anything.

The actual power consumption of water hardness the product relies on water and ionic conductivity. So the actual power consumption is rated to basically how they're saying hardness. But that means you know how basically contaminated or how you know not pure the water is. So you know if you've got really 100 percent pure water and these things not gonna work too well.

It's an electrolysis device. You put enough voltage and current through water like this and you're going to separate the hydrogen and you're gonna boil the water. Yeah, it's gonna work. It's basic electrolysis, but it's the most dangerous way to boil water possible.

And we've got some warnings down here. The product: Do Not let children near The power cord is damaged or broken Protective case They're concerned about a damaged power cord I think I'd Be concerned about something else and children with this thing. Oh good. so you know all those are warning videos about not dropping your hairdryer in the bath and things like that because they're connected up to a mains cord.
If you put them in water in the touch and you touch the water, you can die. I Can't help laughing, but this is deadly serious. They're selling a product consumer product with exposed mains wires that you deliberately stick into water and look. it's safe, safe.

Yeah, look. the this couple looks happy here. They're gonna. They're taking their portable electric emotion element with them while they're going camping and they're just gonna stick it in there.

warm up their water. Unbelievable. But look at the item description. this is funny.

Microwave special materials Naan tops non-toxic odorless in 100-degree water is does not decompose, not aching, not discoloration. defamation due to the magnetic wave action during the heating. After water electromagnetic energy, moisture occurs, bizarre oscillation collision, and after friction, the water rising temperatures add some fine chinglish right there. I Love it.

but look at this one through. special panels put chlorine converting into hypochlorite play a role in disinfection and sterilization. Ah, I'm not very good at chemistry, but doesn't heating up chlorine actually? Maybe potentially convert it into a gas chlorine gas which is kinda sorta dangerous. but I know it you're saying Dave Don't be too harsh on this look.

after all, they have a warning here and it's in a red. It's even got a double in just in case. Don't use metallic or plastic container. Don't heat when the container has no water or or enough water.

Don't put the device in water completely. Exclamation marks everywhere when you finish heating, switch off device first, wait 30 seconds and then take the device out. Never touch the element when it is hot. Never put your hands into the water when it is heating.

No. Sherlock Unfortunately, there's 28 people out there who've bought just this one from this one seller in this one auction. That's it. And they have another hundred available ready to ship direct from.

Hong Kong for three dollars, eighty nine including postage. Beauty and well. I Don't really have to insult anyone's intelligence by telling you how dangerous it is sticking exposed mains wires directly into water like my five-year-old would know this. Unbelievable.

But people you know they, they see the words safe up here. no worries in it, like it's plastic. It looks insulated and things like that. So your average Joe might buy this thinking oh yeah, you know, look at it says it's safe.

No worries, right? You're put in mains wires directly in the water. Like So I shouldn't have to tell you not to buy this heap of crap. It'll kill you. Okay, don't try this at home.

It's alive. It works. Wow One kilowatt look at it. There it is.
if you can't Curious about the power factor, there we go. It's almost BAE It is bang on so no worries. Why so much of the 500 watts? Well, 1.1 kilowatts? That's ridiculous. Yeah, and the steam is coming up.

Where is that hydrogen? Yeah, that looks completely safe, doesn't it? 240 volt mains. two plates straight in the tap water. 1.2 kilowatts now. Unbelievable.

Just no. Hang on. No, no, that's right. The damn thing blew up in my hand when I was trying to measure 240 volt mains.

I was holding it like this probe in the 240 volts as I do bang. The damn thing did before. It didn't literally blow apart, but it was one hell of a bang and I would jump 10 feet across the room. dancing.

Me killed me. So clearly there guys the review because all I've got is a charred meter I don't have another one to do a review. not that I would anyway because this thing has a serious safety issue which needs to be addressed and I think I know possibly why it blew up. So let's take a look at it.

Bizarre oscillation indeed. Bizarre oscillation in the brain of whoever produced this product.

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Molnar Robert says:

It's only dangerous if you don't know about the danger.
For example you can drive a car with no brakes if you know about it,it's only dangerous if it's otherwise, thinking you are having good brakes and suddenly they are quitting.

NEVER BUY PRODUCTS THAT COME FROM CHINA, WITHOUT A GENUINE BRAND NAME!

Report ALL non authentic products…. ALWAYS!

FILTER YOUR SEARCH TO INCLUDE "AUTHENTIC" or "GENUINE"

(This makes COUNTERFEITS more illegal, and easier to LEGALLY pursue for damages)

If that piece of shit is drawing 1.1kW in tap water how much power is it going to use when itโ€™s in salt water?!

I'm just imaging the catastrophic effects that would be caused if someone used this as a "fun-time" device.

I bought one of these because it's too good not to. But seriously, the electrical hazard is probably the least of the concerns. You can take precautions. You cant get around the chromium, iron, and other metals it leaches into the water.

whats the alternative.. aka lowest common value….always wonder about that..in the western world.. such devices are horrendous, but in other regions, the "alternative DIY variant" can often be even more dangerous in the pursue of doing something as basic as heating up water for food, supp or whatever.
you can see it in worst prisons in the world, and how they heat up water from mains.. just a wire and plates and then trying their best to maintain some difference between it.
and likely also poor regions on the globe, where they use such DIY wire/plate tactic to heat up water for basic things. .
Is this 2 USD product better,.. ofcourse.. the cable seem to be able handle the wattage and there are something balancing the plates to a certain extent.
There are very poor people on the globe, that will use whatever they can to get something done, just as you will.. on a video like this and take the high road trying to profit on social media with clickbait titles.
you would be supprised the crude way some poor regions operate, and in these condition.. this water heating tool are sadly prefered.

This type of products probably leaks through EU customs, but it is definately illegal to distribute in EU. Is there a crime by the Chinese who sell this lethal crap?

this shit generate toxic chemicals, by decomposing metals with electrons into water, anyone distributes this should be sued. purely dumb!

The only experience I have with similar items is a room vaporiser. The sort of thing you use to help a congested child breath, usually with eucalyptus or similar. They are a different beast as they are sealed and you canโ€™t get to the plates or the water when correctly used.
As they need trace elements of calcium or salt in the water to conduct the current the plates build up scale.
In the vaporises there is a non toxic tablet you drop in every 5 or so uses that causes the scale to flake off.

the load testing of diesel generators adjacent to my workshop was performed by lowering a frame of three copper plates into a 500 gallon tank of water with salt added by the shovelful to increase the load. If it was a cold day and a 1MW generator was being tested you had quite a substantial fog on the runway apron

You've gotta relax mi amigo! How is someone going to get hurt by that thing! It's not designed to be with you while you are taking a Bath for crissakes! And I don't think that anyone would be putting their hands in the container they're using to heat up the water dummy! Relax and you'll live longer! Ok thanks for your reply soon okay? Ciao for now Out
