Dave builds and tests the 24 core dual processor 2.6GHz Intel Xeon E5-2630 v2 video editing machine and benchmarks against his current 8 core i7 3770K machine at 3.5GHz.
This is one hour of PC building and software testing, if you find this stuff boring, DON'T WATCH IT!

CORRECTION:
The i7 3770K is actually running at 3.7GHz
UPDATE:
Even doing a 1 hour render at 240W consumption, the heatsinks do not even get warm to the touch.

Done.
Threadripper
wow what a beast. i couldn't find the parts to build one myself.
"Murphy 'll get ya, every time." Now that is an awesome T-shirt idea. EEVblog rules all!
Simple plastic stand-offs for the not connected screw points would work fine. As long as you have the perimeter screws hold the mobo, you are fine.
what motherboard?
Wooohhh, Are you Really Barking about the Stand Off's for the Mother Board..? REWIND<< You Do know you can MOVE them, it been that way from Day One..Paws you the Drill And TAP Bit's.. 80 Plus power supply, And you Do need 4 MEM Sticks Per CPU for the Full RAM Buss With..NICE ECC for all My Workstations RAM..Wow your Fan's taking about 20 Watts alone..Just noticed it 2015, Hehe, You have the Drive Bay's filled up yet..? Still fill up the Memory Bamk's right it Doubles the Bandwidth ..
Hello Dave yes I also agree what you say far as video rendering my old machine used a 500 gig 7200 sata hard drive to render my Sony Vegas my new machine uses a 2 gig I really love my Sony Vegas
I see videos on connecting 2 computers with USB can you do a video on how to transfer and retrieve info between both please
May I suggest Velicoraptors or SAS drives in RAID10 with a LSI RAID controller (say a LSI 9260-8i). You could also add a SSD to the RAID set to improve read/write disk IO performance.
Hi, you should have connected the second processor power supply… On many server boards for dual CPU, second one is regulated to not function at its best with only one power circuit engaged… Regards…
Baaastards. Excellent.
Dave you aren't really a computer guy are you.
I'd switch to XP and remove any Internet connection to the machine.
Ever plug in that 2nd power cable since making this?
noob man
Supermicro motherboards are best purchased with the case AND power supply….. The header pins are a pain in the ass too because they sometimes user a proprietary connector as well. I've been buying Asus server boards lately.
this is a server mother board. not for normal atx pc cases thats wy it wont fit the normal way pls look for the linus tech tip video's for more motherboard info and pls do not take the rest serious but system builds are correct.
Dave, I think you'll find the second cpu was slower because it had less ram, also what operating system are you using? It looked like win 7, are you aware that only versions Pro, ultimate, & enterprise support 2 cpu's, 64 bit of course. Interesting build, I (like others) also think that Sony program is far from the best option and holding the system back. Good luck I hope you sort it.
I love you and your videos Dave, and I have been going through watching loads (going backwards) – but I can tell that you're not an IT guy, there was so much wrong info in this video, so much you could have done better to get the performance you wanted, so many things you got wrong too, simple little tid-bits, but still…
lots of comments have mentioned some, but there were too many to list!
i love technology!
SuperMicro makes high end workstation boards in addition to server boards. The way to tell the difference is that they put sound on workstation boards and no built in video. On the server boards, they put built in video and no sound.
So, what you have there is a workstation board. It was probably intended for CAD or some other high end purpose like video editing, where processing power and quantity of RAM might make the user able to do more work, faster
So many PCIe lanes gone to waste 😛
SuperMicro, you have to know that because no one does tell you that, does not use Standard eATX but their own proprietary thing that they also call "EATX".
Learned something new from this video. I started recording Roller Derby games in The Netherlands last year using my phone and also started a tech channel recently to charge my projects with the world.
Rently switched to a Panasonic HC-V770 for better quality and ease of use compared restarting recording every ~20min on my phone. Also switched to 1080 50p MP4 recording and this both impacted my storage and processing time.
I currently have a I7 3770k which is still a nice machine for my purpose. Was hoping to speed things up (and keep from having to upgrade the entire machine) by buying a discrete graphics card and then leveraging the GPU for getting things done faster.
currently still using Windows Movie Maker but I miss features in it to make editing easier. I almost don't edit anything except merging all the files but still Movie Maker just doesn't cut it.
I hope GPU acceleration is still a possibility but I'll have to investigate and compare editing software packages and see if the total cost is even worth it to me.
Thank you Dave!
