    Once, again… a good set of steel picks is essential for SMD rework. Every time you finish a chip, lightly rake the pins with the pick and watch for movement. (Don't pull on them too hard!)

    Pin pitch did not look off the angle of the chip was off. It looked to me like it was tilted to the left a few degrees.

    Also goes to show how a basic scope can be a useful diagnostic tool – don't underestimate the power of even an old single channel analog scope when troubleshooting. Also, most problems lean more towards the basic than the complex.

    Multiple failures nearly always screw up your logical substitution method, and initially lead you in the wrong direction. We all do it, and 40mins is getting away with it lightly.

    If connecting the power wrongly damages one chip it rather makes sense to assume the others are at least likely to be worthy of inspection. What this teaches me is: stand back and take a few moments to see the whole situation instead of focusing in to a single known fault.

    3 separate devices showing the exact same symptom, to suspect 3 separate failure instead of a single failure wouldn't be terribly sensible. especially considering that they all had the same symptoms…

    Only hint that all three may be dead is the fact the are all connected together serially, so the first killed the second and third… it's lucky that they didn't re-kill your repaired no1 chip..
