Hi, yes, it's the 4th of April 2014. Why is that date significant I hear you ask? Well, as you probably know from the title of the video, this is my fifth year doing the Eev blog 5 years ago. today I decided Well I'm going to do this video blog thing. Start it and well, just for a bit of fun.
Really? Uh April 4th, 20, 9 I got this wacky idea that I just sit in front of a camera and well say something about Electronics have this Electronics Show it was supposed to be like M you know, a regular thing weekly, something like that. So I just got the only real uh, sort of camera I had that hooked up the computer crappy old 320x 240 webcam. oh it was even awful back then it was so ancient and I sat on a box in front of the monitor I had a little mic down there had no idea idea what I was doing and I press record and I did my first 10-minute video back then because hey, 5 years ago YouTube had that 10minute limitation if you remember that. Oh goodness, only seems like yesterday, but 5 years ago to the day.
So I just wanted to do a quick video saying thank you to everyone who has supported me over the last 5 years and the growth of this blog. and now as you know, it's my full-time business. So thank you very much to everyone who's supported in terms of viewing. Uh, contributing to the comments uh The Forum the blog website? uh, supporting my advertisers on the website.
Stuff like that, contributing financially, donating all that sort of stuff. Thank you very much. It's helped take me from just a you know, another little side hobby thing that I thought I'd start to hey this is my full-time business and it's actually been almost, uh, not quite to the day, but pretty close uh to the day around about the same time I finished up at Altium that was 3 years ago. So I've been doing this gig eev log fulltime for 3 years now and I started 5 years ago to the day probably to the hour or something I think I uploaded it on that night or something like that I uploaded it to my personal YouTube account I posted it uh cuz I had real no audience I had a website I I think I might have put it on there but I really posted it to the Oz electronics for at the time and oh I think like 30 or 50 people watched it after the first day and I went awesome Beauty you know 50 people wanted to watch what I had to say and they all were waiting for the next one so I did another one and man 600 videos later this is the 599th video I just shot my 600th one just before which is a uh fundamentals Friday on Op ANS which everyone's been asking for so that will follow this.
but I just wanted to upload this one today very quickly to thank everyone and at the moment I am 22 million over 22 million views, 125,000 subscribers I That's insane I Never thought there'd be that many people out there wanting to watch an Electronics engineering video blog back then. I didn't even like the name actually I in my first episode I asked for a better name. the Eev blog just didn't sound any good, but hey, nobody came out with a better name and it's stuck and well, it's the EU blog that's my brand these days. but uh I can remember doing a I think it was a drive time video headed to Altium and uh I thought I'd switch it on and I was talking about. you know I I think I had just hit. Was it a th000 subscribers or something like that and oh I was stoked. You know, 1,000 subscribers? Wow I never thought i'' get that big now it's 125,000 and it doesn't look like stopping. Absolutely crazy for a niche.
Pretty much you know a about as Niche a video blog as it kind of gets I guess although has a little bit of wider appeal than I don't know a knitting blog or something like that, but still, it's pretty Niche I'm absolutely stunned at those numbers. and uh, so 22 million views, 125,000 subscribers, 600 odd videos I've done I've done more than that, but there's only 600 official odd ones. And if you do the math, uh, 5 years at 3 65 days a year, that's uh, better than one video or one video every 3 days or thereabout. So continuously shot one video at least on average every 3 days for the last 5 years.
and I think the longest break I've had is uh, between videos is probably a week, week and a half tops. something like that. So yeah, I think I need a long holiday? Do my eyes look baggy? I don't know. Anyway, thank you very much guys for supporting me I don't have a cake cuz I only realized yesterday just looked at the date oh it's the third and oh the fourth today and well, there you go.
5 years go figure. Anyway, um, plans for the future I have no idea I just don't want to screw it up cuz I enjoy doing this. If I didn't enjoy it I wouldn't be here doing it. that's the thing.
and uh, this this lab. this um, office which I uh bought is I've had this for 2 and 1 half years now so jeez, that only seemed like yesterday that I was uh, showing you the video I moved out of the garage, shot all those hundreds of videos in that tiny garage. what was it? 2 m or 2 1/2 M by 2 and 1/2 M something like that, it was hopeless. This bench 6 M long by 900 mm deep is more surface area than I had in my entire previous lab.
Uh, and that included both benches plus the floor area and everything else. So yeah, yeah, it's awesome working here. It's awesome. Aome coming to work I guess if you can call it work, it's not really.
it's just a fun hobby that happens to be my career. So there you go. Yes, uh, no plans at all. Never had any plans for the blog really and I still don't.
So yeah, I just keep winging it every week. Plan not to scroll it up, just keep on making videos and hopefully videos that people like. But as I've always said, it's impossible to please everyone. So sorry if I can't.
do you know just the videos you signed up for I Know some people just sign up to see tutorials or they just sign up to see tear Downs Or they just sign up to see rants. That's what they subscribe to my channel for. but unfortunately I can't please everyone. So yeah, there's nothing I can really do there apart from keep doing a mix of stuff and hope enough people stick around to keep this viable anyway. I don't want to go back to a real day job. that would suck. so thank you every! thank you very much everyone for uh, supporting me and it's just going gang busters. The Forum is Huge.
Now it's absolutely ridiculously huge. There's like 700 posts a day per day I Can't even keep up I used to read every post on the Forum and I used to use read every YouTube comment I I Still try and read all the YouTube comments, but gez it's hard to keep up and I definitely can't keep up with all the uh Forum posts either. but uh yeah, I'm still number one on the Forum 10,000 posts Plus on the Forum think I need to get a life What do you think? need to get out of the lab? Yeah So with that, hey, there you go I like to Waffle on 7 minutes I've been waffling on single take video. So yeah, there we go.
4th of April 2014 started the 4th of April 2009 5 years. Geez you get less for murder. Catch you next time.

I wish I was living your dream mate, although I do get a vicarious thrill, by watching you do your thing online. I've often wonder at night lately what it actually pays a year being Dave the EEVbloger now some 5yrs down the road? Hope it's enough to add young Dave2 to the payroll. Keep up the great works and Sorry you hate the Cats, hopefully it's only cause they have the ESD's.
Cheers,
Toronto Canada.
Time for a " best of " episode mate!

your videos made me start to think about electronics in a whole new way.
I guess, it's true for a bunch of other electrical engineering students also.. ๐
Keep doing the good job. and EEVblog became a brand for sure.. ๐ย wish you all the best. Waiting for the 10 years anniversary. he heย ๐
