Hi guys, just a very quick impromptu video: I'm at the uh uh Parks radio telescope otherwise known as the Dish and there it is Tada the Park 64 m Radio Telescope. Unfortunately, I'm not allowed to go uh near it today. but we have some interesting Hardware here. here's phased array feed uh for the square kilom array uh project and there it is.

It's designed to go there and we've got some real prototype Hardware Check it out. I'll uh show you the top there we go. there's our receiver pads just on a large PCB there I'm assuming or something like that anyway and uh, there's a little San checking it out and they got some mini circuits um receivers but looks of it something. There's a large huge board there some RS on there and a whole bunch of other Hardware there's some huge Hardware at the back there some RS stuff sorry through a glass uh case here, can't really see it, but uh, neat nonetheless.

And there's the uh if local oscillator. There we go. It's all modular board construction. Check it out.

So this is a there's the power filter. This is a real um prototype. Hardware Oh, now we're now we're serious business. RF modules look at that.

but uh, there's another mini circuits power splitter and uh yeah, that's some serious business I assume there's one of those per tile and uh, there some RF cans they're obviously part of. There we go. Yeah, sorry I'll try and take some photos of this and Link them in. but uh otherwise.

but that's really interesting. This is part of the square kilometer array project which we didn't win or we partially won really. Um, it actually went to Um South Africa I believe. So there you go there is the Uh a prototype receiver that's a real one.

It's not just a dummy mockup. they use this for Prototype testing on the Square Kilm array, so that's pretty awesome. So there you go. I'm about to, uh, check out the Parks Radio telescope.

Hopefully I'll get back here one day and do a shoot a proper technical blog. Catch you next time. Um.

Thanks for the video! FYI, if you use a circular polarizer filter, you can minimize those reflections off the glass.

I'm wondering do these big dishes have drainage holes in them or something to get rid of water buildup?

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jesse says:

You just got 10x more awesome.

    Too late, he already did,

    How many channels FTA? LOL

what the fuck ? i thought you were smart enough to realize that our grasp of science is still lilliputian, and that intelligent design could easily coexist in some form with our current science. I am way disappointed in your cognitive shortcomings here 🙁

parkes radio telescope… that was fucking impressive when i went there !

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Josh says:

WOW, i went there about 2 years ago and it was amazing! Great to see this on the internet! Good job Dave 🙂

I think that the USSR or China would have been more than happy to tell the world that the moon landing was a fake. This was in the middle of the cold war! The radio signals from the moon have been received all over the world.

But that's never the argument you can believe anything you want, but the moment you try to make up bad or just plain wrong science to "prove" it. Well that is just stupid, wrong.

I think you get 3D-glasses with circular polarization as well (left-hand and right-hand). And AFAIK, the polarization filters for cameras are linear but have an extra conversion step to circular otherwise the auto-focus wouldn't work.

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dominic Peterson says:

Yep – the "faked" Apollo missions. Just to be sure, they faked it 6 times in 3 and a half years and no-one involved has ever admitted it. Amazing!

    Oh, and two other things:
    – it's spelled Parkes (with an "e")
    – you're an idiot.

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Break Party says:

Dave right on bro, sorry to hear about the camera : (
    Major Bumma…
What does that dish do comms with?
and what spectrum does it run in?
Must go back and get more footage.
    Excellent video dude.
FYI – I am wearing my Bondi Beach t-shirt today -LOL

I think those tracks are transmission stripline on the PCB, any chance to know the impedance value they need to match?

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars namibj says:

Well, against reflection you use circular polfilters and afaik 3d cinema glasses use horizontal/vertical polarization

pop a lens out of polarized sunglasses (or from those 3d movie glasses) and hold it over the lens! You may have to up the exposure but you should get the same result.

No, creationists are idiots and deserved to be derided. They do not get to put their bat-shit crazy demonstrably wrong ideas on the same shelf as facts.

This is just a small pocket camera.

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars EEVblog says:

Yes, I only realised this when I got back and edited the video. I knew it did this, but had completely forgotten.

At 1903A3shooter: The title of that movie is "The Dish" as I mentioned earlier… Indeed an excellent movie 😉

What's idiotic or arrogant about my comment?

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Priest Mt. Hiker. says:

Hey Dave, they made a movie about that array and the first moon landing. Quite a good film, sorry cant remember the name right now but worth a watch,
