Hi guys, just a quick video I thought I'd shoot because I just picked up a whole bunch of stuff uh, from an auction. as it turns out, uh, these are quite, um, rare. These kind of test equipment auctions in large uh volumes here in Australia and uh, what was happening? This looks like that, um a an Australian uh measurement laboratory or a Australian military uh, measurement laboratory is shut down and they auctioning off pallet loads worth of um, electronic test gear. really high-end stuff.

lots of unserviceable pallets. I was hoping to pick up um, like a full pallet load of unserviceable. you know, all sorts of equipment right up to full on Spectrum analyzers and everything. but unfortunately, um, biding went crazy on those like up upwards of $7,000 or something like that for a pallet of unserviceable um gear.

So unfortunately, I didn't pick those up. but I did pick up a few items and uh, one, uh, lot was an absolute bargain. So I'll just show you what I got here I'll be doing a um separate uh video on these no doubt. uh.

first of all, what I got uh for? this is an absolute Um bargain by the way. uh for 260 odd bucks I picked up um, it was a lot. Um, one of these. um APC brand uh, pretty good brand apparently APC brand UPS uh 3unit rack mount uh power supply.

This one is a Uh 2200 uh watt one and uh, it's got the built-in 48v uh battery pack in it. um oh I can put the specific model numbers. It comes with the front uh, panels for them as well and the rear of the things. If you want to have a look down here, they've got like a 15 amp output and they've got eight uh 10 amp uh outputs down in there.

plus plus uh, you know USB uh control serial control and also for an external battery pack and I Also got the uh the external battery pack as well. So there's effectively three 48 so there's one buil into here which you can slide out battery pack in here and then there's two external battery packs here which then slide into this Chazzy over here with these huge big ass connectors on them. they they connect in the batteries and then the output from that there it is. Look at that absolute monster.

um plugs into uh, the back here of this uh power supply and this thing can uh deliver um 2200, Watts or something like that or I think it can do like a 15 amps and then 10 amps on those four and 10 amps on those four as well. um sine wave? you know, 240 volt so really great UPS um units and they come from there you go the Australian government National measurement Institute There you go Nmi and uh, still within uh date? well you know expiry date as the batteries presumably. um, you know, uh 14. So I've really don't really have a use for such a sort of, you know, really high-end um, UPS uh system system? really? So this will probably go on eBay Not sure how much I can get for it, but for the 260 bucks I paid for this.

but wait until you see what I got as well for the 260 bucks. Oh, absolute bargain. So they'll probably go on. eBay These things weigh an absolute ton.
Um, the Just: these units are about 60 kilos, um each. So the two battery packs plus the frame. that's about 60 odd kilos or thereabouts. really big heavyduty stuff, sealed lead acid batteries in them.

they're 48v uh, battery modules and um, absolute Beast what else did I get for that money? Well, check this out folks. it is working I Believe, um, it's an agilant. Uh, uh. 53131a uh, duel channel 225 Meg Frequency counter.

And there we go. It's from the CSI CSI um I've heard that they've just laying off more people at the Csro the bastards as if they're not getting enough money from that. Wi-Fi Uh. patent and money just goes away into General coffers The Absolute Bastards and they heard they're laying people off I Just uh.

the wife just told me that today. Absolute Bastard. So um, expiry date 08 but on the back here? um, it was. Uh yeah, it was last C in 07 and with expiry in 11.

So they've actually got a long uh cow cycle at the Csro by the looks of it. and uh, this. um I So I'm pretty excited about that so that sucker works. And by the way, this is the Um 10 digigit model and I believe there's a I think it might be the 132a I think uh from memory is the 12-digit model and I'm just curious to know if uh, if you know, it's just like a software difference inside.

if the Hardware's absolutely identical to give you the 12 digits cuz the display in this thing has actually got the full 12 digits in there, you probably can't uh, no, you have to get the right angle to, uh, see the vacuum fluorescent display in that. but it's actually got the full 12 digits, but it doesn't make use of them. only the higher end model does. So maybe it could be hacked into the 12-digit model.

but yeah, I mean that alone is worth more than the Uh 260 bucks. I Also got, uh, an industrial computer. It's an ICP Electronics industrial uh computer. Not terribly exciting I Don't think it's uh, you know, pretty boring.

It's got a filter on the front, couple of fans, and uh, you know, removable hard drive rack I don't haven't even powered it up yet DVD drive but in the back? um, rather interesting. They've used it as some sort of uh control computer for the Um for their measurement uh standards system and there's a whole bunch of stuff on here. Check this out! They got TTY uh stuff modem I did actually get a 56k modem with this thing and then there's a whole bunch of RJ 11s along here as well. and then you've got your standard motherboard.

uh, slot down there Something's Happened Whoops, Yeah, um I think it may have been, uh, sort of stood on this end of the Um. this was attached to it and they've probably laid it down flat on that and that's all bent and there's a little bit of uh. damage up the top there. and there's the model number for it.

Rack 3000 GB R21 blah blah blah blah blah. haven't looked it up yet, haven't powered it up. so uh, you know I don't expect it to be anything, uh powerful. but anyway, maybe I could put that on.
um eBay Now what I'm really excited about is this puppy here. Let me move it around here. we go check this out. It is a custom rack.

uh, it is a part of it. Came with the frequency counter and is part of it. Looks like they a Time calibration rack at the CSO. They got the CSO sticker on there and there's a Rubidium frequency standard in it.

Absolutely beautiful. Haven't I'm going to do a separate video straight after this I think I'm I'm going to power it up and maybe, um, take it apart. slide out a few of those. but Ridium frequency standard um strain Defense Force uh calibration.

It's got uh backup there so it looks like it was their backup uh primary, um reference standard and it comes with a GPS receiver built in don't know what uh brand but obviously hooked in for the one pulse per second output and it's got these IR uh brand uh distribution Amplified as well as an IRT dual Channel power supply. and if we have a look at the back, it's pretty darn funky. Check this out here. we go get down here.

there's our dual, that's our dual AC input there. So there we go. It's actually got two inputs, which is rather novel. I guess uh, two separate, one from the mains and one from the battery backup I Don't know um, but these IR distribution amplifiers these are are for Distributing um, the 10 MHz reference signal of course or the 1 pulse per second reference signal output from the time standard.

and uh, it looks like it's a custom design cuz check this out. Nmi there it is National measurements um Institute of course SRS Rubidium. That means SRS Folks, as you might know stands for Stan I think is going to mean Stanford Research Systems So I reckon inside this puppy is a Stanford Research Systems uh, Rubidium standard. Worth a fortune just on its own.

So fantastic. and uh, so that looks like it's all custom designed that uh rack. So I'll do a separate video right after this. Take it apart, there's the GPS antenna input some I don't know if I'll be able to get GPS here in the lab I mean I'm smacking the middle of the building under a ton of concrete.

um I'd be very surprised if I could get GPS in here I've never actually tried it, but that's pretty exciting. and Tada Check this out. Here we go. We have a well.

Let's start off, we have a Keithly 240a high voltage power supply. You've seen this before. I've already got one here in the lab, so uh, this one will probably, uh, just go on eBay um and goes up to 1,000 volts. Nice high voltage uh power supply.

so um, that's a duplicate. They looks like they still got the original protective cap on there. looks like they haven't used the uh front on this ever. They've just uh got it hooked into the Um output on the back and uh, that is the high voltage power source for and by the way, this is last calibrated Tada 08 There you go.
So doing 010 and then we've got a Keithly 51 15a Mega Home bridge and this is a bit of a beast folks. Last calibrated uh 08 as well. So um, it's a mega own bridge that allows you to measure extremely high resistances. Check it out.

Seven decades 1 2, 3, 4, 5, Six Seven Decades. and check this out on the dial. I will give you a closeup folks, right? That's Mega Ohms Okay, 10 The Power of Six. So Mega Ohms gig.

Ohms Terra Ohms. But look over here. the last decade can go up to time 100 * 10. So that's 1,000 ter ohms or one Peta Ohm.

That is absolutely incredible. And um I am led to believe that, uh, this puppy um, is, uh, fully working and uh, it's got this front drawer down here which pops out. Do Not switch off. Yeah, all these cow gears.

You just leave them all this cow gear. You just leave them powered up, uh, continuously in the uh, airon, uh Power lab. But uh yeah. I'll definitely have to do a second video on this.

Uh, like powering this thing up and actually measuring something cuz like you know we're talking a pet. Oh I mean absolutely incredible. you F F halfway? Well, you fart on the other side of the building and it's going to affect the reading on this thing. That's how sensitive this thing is.

Absolutely incredible. So, and it's a bridge of course, so it requires some uh, you know, knowledge to use it. You can't just hook up the resistor and it, uh, and it gives you a readout. I mean there's the Uh distributor by wton Frankie I think they're still around? Anyway, it's got a center zero meter of course and it's got Um functions.

You can, uh, calibrate. There it is is standardized, calibrate, external, operate. It's got a built-in uh Bridge voltage source of course but that only goes up to a 100 volts by the looks of it. so you can switch between the internal Uh source and the external.

It looks like obviously with this rack, they've used an external Uh source with this thing, so pretty excited to uh, get that thing. That could be a good thing to play around with. It'll definitely be a tear down of course. and uh I assume it's still works So fantastic stuff.

And up here, we're not done yet. We have a Genrad ie. um, of course Gen Rad or um IE T Now and there it is. It's a 14 33f decade resistance box and it goes up to 110.

uh, what is it? Yeah, 100K or thereabouts. So it's uh, 7 decades so we can go up to 100 K There X means uh, 10 of course. so it's got 10 on each Uh ranges I I Like the way that they've done, the Uh dials on these things look zero like they've just painted the black behind there and you can just uh and it just uh shows through like that. Really quite neat.

anyway. Um, Gen red these are um, this is was one of the Uh reference standards. the ceration standards for the Department of Defense. There it is and uh, unfortunately this these ones were sold as uh, not working unserviceable.
Um, and of course I Knew that was absolute cuz there's nothing inside these things. The only thing inside these things to go wrong is the switch contacts cuz the resistors aren't going to drift. they're Ultra Precision Ultra reliable resistors in these things. and uh, here's the um I've got two of these by the way.

and uh, they've identically failed. um, their results. So you know decade out of Tolerance Yeah, right, we'll have a look at the Cow sheet in a minute. Out of Tolerance is just going to mean that one of the contacts in in one of these switches is Dicky I reckon if I get in there, um, clean the switch contacts up it would be, you know, a calibration standard again.

So um, please see report see report for details. blah blah blah blah blah. The other one I've got behind here is, uh, exactly the same. It's just uh, saying that we've got some, uh, refer report for details.

three decades out of, uh, tolerance. A bit of, um, the contacts on there are probably can't see it. Not going to bother getting my zoom lens out, but they're they're a bit. they're a bit crusty, those uh, binding posts.

They do have a bit of, uh, rust and things on them so they need a bit of a cleanup. but um, it is basically bang on I was uh, playing with it before and uh, let's see if we can. There we go. So we got zero I I've zeroed it out so there's there's 1 ohm like I the meter's slightly out on its zero, but uh, 2 ohms and uh so forth and so forth.

and uh, there we go. it's you know it works. It's just slightly out of tolerance. so um I reckon a good uh, switch clean.

We'll fix that now. Where are they hang on? I've got the test reports here. they are. T I Got the test reports for these things that they were referring to and as I said, they'll only be out by half a bees dick.

really. And if we have a look yeah, you can see like it should. You know the lower limit. Oh sorry, what's the upper limit? Is it slightly? yeah, it's slightly over the upper limit like whoopy.

Doo You know it's just the contact that's uh, that's all it's going to be. So all of the range is just slightly out as you'd expect because one of the contacts is a bit Dicky and if we have a look at the other one, uh, calibration blah blah blah blah blah does not conform because it's you know, half a be's dick out. And here's the yeah look. It's like indicated value: 89775.

The lower limit is 8979 so you know there's bugger all in it. So yeah, I reckon if we just uh, give those things a bit of a clean, that'll be sweet. So I'm pretty darn happy with uh, this whole score I Rather like it. So um, that will be uh, make a few fun videos anyway.

But what I think I'm going to do now is uh, go and have a play with this time um standard. If this is a Stanford research uh Rubidium in there, then woohoo Got a really good score there. That alone is worth a a butt low. but I've got the um uh distribution amplifiers so you know this would have been used as well.
This was the backup unit just in case the other one uh fail by the looks of it and how it's got back up on here. but um, they. the primary purpose of this would be the main frequency standard for the entire measurement uh, lab and all of those outputs that you saw on the back. They go to all of the instruments so they would go to you know, every oscilloscope, every frequency counter, every instrument, Spectrum analyzer, etc etc.

in the Uh lab. and that would be their primary Uh frequency standard for the Um CSO National measurement lab. Woohoo! and now it's mine! Yes, all right. So I just wanted to show you a few things there.

Hope you enjoyed it. I Will um upload another video for this one shortly. Catch you next time.

Hi Dave as an ex CSIRO scientist with several world wide patents I agree about csir management "Absolute Bast…", usually what happened post 2000, mediocrity of scientist got hold of the top jobs and made the rest of us redundant. We with Dave like super powers (well almost ) would like you to keep the eevblog going mate I like the way you "put words together" so reminds me of the old csiro when we walked the world stage, yanks respected us and poms feared us. And the old line for Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy "( Antipodean ) men were men and women were women and small furry creatures from alpha centauri were (management )…". PS//I knew the people before this lot that run csiro into the ground and they told me that current csiro management lot made all the right noises when they were hired …only to go and FU everything ( well almost everything )
PS2// I seen the last csiro guru on analoug design retire and die from cancer , it was a sad day.

Bastards for laying people off at a government institution funded with expropriated dollars? I guess if you know someone who works there that may be disappointing , but it wasn't a real job to begin with.

Hook a Arduino onto the time standard, and you got a Stratum 0 NTP server. That would be a good thing to publish to the Internet.

If this is good, you can run it at your home and keep everything other than heating and air conditioning on that so they can survive brownouts and blackouts.

We purchased 9 similar APC UPS. They were 3000 VA capacity and all 9 were bad on delivery. The heavy power xformers had pulled their screws right out of the threads which were made by deforming the thin sheet metal case into a (short) cylinder and tapping it. Four of the replacements were bad as well! When we finally got 9 working we found that when AC input disappeared they tried to boost the voltage before switching to battery. That was enough to cause the loads to shutdown. Useless for us.

I seen those UPS systems and it took me back . I worked for a huge UPS company and we had a contract to provide maintenance repair and updates . I spent 3 weeks over there working on that same type . All I had to replace was a blown rectifier diode and blown fuses . The company sent me there 3 weeks to fix it. I fixed it in 4 house . If you see KLH on the UPS systems it was me that worked on it.

Have a crack at PowerChute with those UPSes. You can set output voltage on battery, low-voltage transfer, high-voltage transfer, sensitivity, shutdown commands, email alerts. Great fun.

You can also turn these things on while unplugged by holding the power button for a few seconds. Maybe you need to charge your phone on the go…

Holding the power button for a few seconds while plugged in will make the UPS enter a self test mode, although this is scheduled to happen every two weeks by default.
