Okay, why not? Here's an impromptu tear down and here's why: you should always carry some tools with you. My little uh Victorinox um mini champ there and I've got the Victorinox cyber tool I always carry that in my bag just in case. but uh I only need the mini Champ here and here we go. I've popped the Uh screws on there.

it's a Commander E system. There you go, um looks like it's uh, 1990 vintage. So there you go. Let's uh, pop the hood off this sucker.

I assume I've got all the Ah Tada Here we go, check it out. Old school and uh, hey, looks like how many Y channels? 4, 2, 4, 6, 8 you know, 4times 8 there. and uh, there you go. Very old school layout.

lots of 40 pin, uh dips, whole bunch of isolation. Transformers and there's uh, some. there's three, uh, phone? um well, inlets, lines there there your three. I guess you can have like three incoming lines maybe? I don't know.

There's all your isolation and your protection and your surge type stuff. They got some uh reays down there. there are mat a Uh brand and well, it looks, uh, it looks rather nice. There's your super cap uh, backup battery there and I won't take apart the rest of it.

but I'll leave that for later. but uh, that heat sink looks like it just uh, there's nothing tying down that uh heat sink there. It looks like that can just do a little bit of a oh no no, it is actually solded in sorry and uh, big toid there and a couple of hybrid looks like little hybrid type devices there I'm not sure what they are I Don't know Anyone who's familiar with the design of these things will probably be able to tell you that. A lot better than me, but there you go.

That's a, uh inside a Commander E system, but it's actually um Samsung there you go. Samsung Samsung Electronics that's a model made in Korea Go figure. But there you go. there's the main Crystal there and uh, what's it actually running? It's running a gold star.

Uh, Z84 100 Bingo There's the prom and uh, what do we got? These are probably um, uh, parallel IO or something like that. perhaps? Um, there's some SRAM there. That's the prom. Well yeah, nothing terribly surprising.

Mini chair down there. You go, always have your tools ready.

Def old school samsung. Four wire connections to each phone set. That pbx is most likely 6 CO lines and 16 Phone ports.

That was a really pretty layout. Neat and the caps at the 3 phone line inputs really pleased me!

@Psychlist1972 Yeah, and it sucks if you are in a rush to catch your flight, then you have to ditch them!

@Comptekhs oh, we have fiber. But those panels are all over the building for getting digital phones and POTS lines to different places, think breakout. 🙂

    @pcuser80 Yep, Samsung's version of the Z80.

    Z80 CPU?

@MichaelJE2 I wonder why they would not just use a PRI T1, E1, J1 something like that then you would not have all of those physical telephone wire connections. I know my install just has four normal telephone lines but I have the other module just for this if I ever need to upscale my lines.

@Comptekhs where I work we have lots of those PBX punchdowns with amphenols. We're due to upgrade to VoIP in the next year or two, I can tell you I'm glad I'm not the guy doing the re-install, we have roughly 2,000 internal lines, and I don't know how many trunks.

Bare in mind VoIP is not a direct replacement as the reliability and quality is not so great.. I'd stick to the the old PSDN set up as it just works!

Unless you can scrounge up the proper station sets, which will undoubtedly be proprietary, what you have is a nice group of parts. There are outfits that sell them used, but they won't be cheap and unjustified for one guy in a small space. (Who would you transfer calls to?)

If you have only one line, it would be a lot simpler just to have maybe two ordinary phones across the line and see if you can sell the PBX box to somebody as a spare unit. (Here today, eBay tomorrow.)

@TheChipmunk2008 I LOVE the sound of half a dozen relays turning on at the same time, so clicky and mechanical.
