The spiders are big in Australia. Meet the EEVblog lab mascot, a huntsman spider.

Hi, just a quick one I thought I'd share. For those who want to know what it's like living here in Australia Well, we got a friend here in the lab which I've seen before I've tweeted a couple of photos of him and here he is. He's probably the Uh Eev blog mascot. Anyway, he inhabits the lab and let's take a look at him.

There he is. He's a huntsman spider. Let me get up on the chair here and we'll get a closer look at him. There he is.

He's a huntsman spider and he's about probably 120 mm uh, leg to leg, so he's not a terribly big one. He's a fairly average, uh, runy one, so you know they can actually grow to about, um, 250 to 300 mm or 10 to 12 in in. Uh, you know, in total leg span, they're not generally considered dangerous. In fact, they're quite beneficial here in Australia because they eat, uh, insects and cockroaches and other things.

So they're quite a nice spider to have around. But there you go. that's the size of him and that is a huntsman spider. Let's see if we can relocate into the garden, shall we? Let's give it a go.

Come here, little fella. All right, come on there we go Got him? Beauty Let's take a look at him. There he is, Ain't he beautiful? He's having a what's he doing there cleaning himself, having a feed I don't know, but uh yeah. nice looking spider.

the old Huntsman I like him. So let's take him out to the garden and uh, he can have more fun out there cuz there's not much uh food in here for him. but I guess he likes it cuz it's maybe a bit warmer in the lab I don't know there he is. Isn't he beautiful? Here we go.

Little fella, There you go. He's not coming out, he's stuck in there. He's stuck there. We go.

Come on there we go. He's out in his natural environment. There you go. Can you see him? It's camouflage? well.

well I'm not sure where he's gone. he's Bugg it off pretty quick and blowed if I can find him so he's got pretty good camouflage. well he'll probably end up uh, back inside the lab or probably inside the uh house. It's not uncommon to find them in your bedroom, up on the ceiling above you as you sleeping or very common to also find them inside your uh car as well.

So they they just love those sort of places. so if you leave your windows down, they can, uh, climb into your car and they can give you a bit of a fright when you're driving along. But anyway, here's my wam my Pine Check it out! This is the world's oldest uh species of plant. It dates to the Jurassic uh region uh uh time period with the dinosaurs and it's an absolutely beautiful, beautiful uh it's they got like Fern leaves on them but they get like a bubbly bark on them.

It was um about a dozen of them were found or a few dozen of them were found in a uh Canyon um up in the Wmi? uh Wilderness um outside of Sydney here, hence why it's called the Wmi Pine and it's probably the world's most famous plant and it's just beautiful. There's only a couple of dozen of them left in the wild, and they thought they were long extinct, but uh, no, they're alive and well here in my front yard. So the uh, the fighter will probably, uh, rematerialize in the lab or in the house. So I'll let you know.
see you.

I have the smaller wolf spiders in my house. I leave them alone. Black widows in my garage and water valve boxes. I leave those alone unless they are in my way. These keep the harmful insect population down.

Standard workshop bug control. These little critters eat all sorts of unwanted guests. I keep mine hungry! I have a Canon camera here with pixels that move. Close inspection revealed dust mites crawling around inside it. Spiders are good! Hey, and great tree mate. Got one here in South West UK.

My girlfriend was half heartedly  paying attention over my shoulder until you mentioned a mascot. She thought it was going to be an orphaned baby wallaby. She saw the spider, let out a scream that must have woke up everyone in a 3 block radius and peed herself. Now I'm band from watching your show in her presence.
