Hi I Thought we'd do a quick teardown of my new of well, they're not new. The second-hand studio monitor speakers. These are a focal professional CMS 40 and buy a lot of accounts. They are very highly regarded.
Studio Monitor: 4-inch job so they're not large but ah, die cast alloy a case. Absolutely fantastic. They're actually I believe they're discontinued I Think they've been replaced by the focal Shape series studio monitors which some people say aren't as good as these original CMS ones. but anyway, four inch woofer and an inverted dome.
you can see it actually curves back inwards. They're aluminium and magnesium a dome tweeter. so at Plato no, the magnesium makes it super special. Anyway, its ability to reproduce our detail is significantly better than the other studio monitors that I've had.
So very nice. We've got a front firing port on it, we've got input sensitivity power switch on the front which is really handy and on the bottom here we've got these screw out feeding comes with a little rubber mat, a vibration isolation mat. We've got a mounting point on the bottom and it's got mounting points on the back as well so you can, you know mount these on like arms or anything. Apparently it's like an industry standard mounting systems and it's a 2-way amplifier system.
25 watt tweeter, 25 watt were phenomenal. It's got low frequency gain settings, high frequency gain settings, and input sensitivity there, and it's very likely that that is also used as a heat sink. Maybe. Is it I Don't know, but it's a die cast alloy.
They use the whole thing, the whole case as a heat sink for this thing. but yeah, down the bottom we've got XLR input. Unfortunately, doesn't have a TRS balanced input. That's a bit annoying, but unbalanced input there.
And yes they are French but manufactured in China or sadface boycott that may come in France their higher end ones and made in France. But yeah, I don't know if the actual drivers are manufactured in France because they use these drivers on a lot of their other high-end products - I'm led to believe even supply a tool for taking off the grills. so we'll pop off the woofer grille and it's a glass polymer thing. It's a glass filled fiber cone or something like that.
There you go for you our cone aficionados and of course the in tweeter as I said aluminium and magnesium alloy has a our face plug on here, but they do provide an optional grille on here. There's a little bit of attenuation in that apparently. So anyway, um, the drivers are quite novel. I Like the inverted dome design, it's very nice.
You know I Am blown away by the quality of construction and this theme die cast alloy. They're actually are designed for use on the road as well. You know you can. If you need like little portable studio monitors on the road and you might very well do, then you know these things apparently fit the bill quite well.
Anyway, let's crack it open I could use an Allen Key to get it open. No, this talks rubbish. Ah, this is what you want to see from your studio monitors. Ah, for those who want to know why I'm not using the road kits anymore is because they were a bit a bit. Boo me bit Basie for my new little cubicle editing cubicle that I'm in, these are up much better in that regard. and of course in such a small space. Of course you want the front fighting. you know, near walls and stuff like that, you want the front firing ports as well.
So I've got the screws out of that. but ah jeez, let's give it up now. Just needed some gentle persuasion there. So there we go.
I Think it's going to come off now? let's have a look his cables. Yeah cables. I'm going to take them off. Hang on.
Oh I've got some in feel foam. First thing I noticed though. Oh look at that toroidal down there in its own little cage. Ah, Thing of Beauty is a joy forever.
We hold the Wonka 'mobile thing of beauty is a joy forever. Well tell you what. I'm thoroughly impressed by this. the cable Lumet Like they've got a wrap around the cables.
presumably like an acoustic. you know, for acoustic properties don't want the bare wires flapping around in the breeze. so just to take the edge off that then they got like a wrap around there to keep all the wiring in place is actually tied into the tied into the screw over there and that's just gorgeous. Okay, it's I don't know how they assemble this thing.
there's obviously a way. and I've got a maybe the Transformers got to come out and then I can get the cables anyway. Ah yeah, it's very impressive so far. Wow, This is just like streets ahead of our studio monitors that I've torn down.
It's just fantastic. It looks like they've got there's a hundred volt tap these a 240 volt jobs so can we get like different? Can you mod these for different regions? Different voltage regions maybe. But anyway, lots of sealing around every aspect. even the terminals on the back there have ceiling.
This is all of course to give it like a completely airtight seal they don't want. They want it all coming out of the port on the front. They don't want any leakage anywhere else and as such you can see the ridges around the outside of the die cast and there's actually a looks like rubber or anyway, it's got some sort of seal inside that groove and then that just mates up to the top. So they the acoustic ceiling on this is absolutely fantastic.
First right? just the PCB mounts down here. They're all like molded into the diecast chassis so that's one of the most rigid mounts you'll ever find. Absolutely remarkable. It's more sealing down in there to the port's that on the back of the XLR connector and whatnot.
and the toroidal transformer. there has been a high pot test if you don't know what I put it stands for higher potential. so they basically put a you can get special-purpose I test geared to do this, but basically put a higher voltage across the transformer, the primary and the secondary to make sure you know it's all working fine and there's no breakdowns, internal faults in the transformer, that kind of stuff. Yiquan brand caps. Ah, focal. Everything was going so fantastic. Why can't you have a Panasonic or a niche econ in there? Come on. Anyway, apart from that, the board looks very, very nice.
I like it this mix of surface mount and through-hole We've got all film caps on here special yellow one, but it's very nice. Of course they've got the seal around the bottom of the caps so they don't flap around in the breeze with your bass. So apart from that, it is actually very nice. I'm at Elo 7/4 Classic fare for something like this going down there.
There's our tweeter and woofer output. I've got some big surface mount resistors there, and an integrated amp down the bottom. so maybe once the woofer, once the tweeter. Not sure what, but yeah, we've got three packages.
We've got our bridge rectifier over here. They all share the same heatsink as I said, it's only a well, it's 50 watts total, 25 watts tweeter, 25 watts woofer nominal, and they actually rate on the woofer I believe it's our night volts per millisecond. they actually rate the they rate the rate. and of course, a slew rate can matter in a speaker design like this.
I mean for an identical cone for an identical power? If you can't, if you're slew rates, just not there, then your cone just can't move physically. You know the physical inertia of the cone just can't move as fast. But of course you know there's tons of stuff that goes into what makes one speaker better than another. You know, part of a you know, a slew rate and bandwidth and performance of the amplifier.
And of course the design of the the. the main component, of course is the design of the drivers themselves. So this big ass magnet on the back that thing. look at it.
Absolutely enormous I might take out the wool from the tweeter. There's nothing else to really see on there. And for those curious, yes, this does have the slight hum in the tweeter just like the other studio monitors that I have. So even these are real expensive.
Focal is not real, real expensive, but you know, moderately expensive. Our focus have the same issue you want to see. Had some thermal paste down there on either screw. yeah, but that toroidal transform and that looks like a Bobby Dazzler doesn't it? And they haven't made the amateur-hour mistake of you know, making the shorter-term with the bolt or anything like that.
They know what they're doing, but that's you know that's very nicely supported in there. It's on its own bracket and shielded around the outside. You know that's that's just terrific. Hmm.
go to get the light at the right angle. Get this part. Numbers: I can't actually read that on my LCD So I'm gonna have to do that in editing. Oh there you go. I Can read that. that's a 79. Oh five is it? Well there you go. 78, One five and Seventy Nine One five.
Well that makes sense. There you go and they've got some. do protection there too. You can see those little Mt diodes and that's a national.
LM 47 66 Jul 40 watt power amplifier. Now this Texas Instruments rubbish and it's more than suitable for the job. It is rated for arm to channel at 40 watts per channel. but as I said, this is 25 watt woofer, 25 what tweeter capable design.
So they're using it well under and you wouldn't want to use it at the maximum of 40 Watts anyway because the distortion is going to go, you know up and it's not going to be literally it's gonna go up. It's gonna be pretty bad at their forty Watt, so you know the performance for this thing is specified at 30 watts. so using it 25 is actually are quite nice and I conservatively rated. so yeah, no problems whatsoever.
And of course the entire design is the heatsink. You know the entire thing, not to mention that it is connected to the diecast chassis. So thermally fantastic. And you'll notice here that there's locked on all the screws holding down the board's in this thing.
plus locks tied on the back of the screws holding down that bar for the transistors. Very nice touch. and if you notice these four ceramic capacitors down here 1206 package. they're actually across all the diodes inside the bridge rectifier and that's a common technique for actually reducing switching transient noise in the diodes even though like you might think it's 50.
Hertz but there can be like higher frequency stuff in there that this gets rid off. So once again, very nice touch. And you can see the ceiling on the back of the tweeter wires down in there and that woofer is nice and almost touch so it takes up the entire depth of this thing. It must have a decent throw on that cone.
I'm not going to go push it right in and find out where the limits are, but anyway. I Like the acoustic design, look at the the ports here. They've got a separate. They've got two separate ports and a big long curve choose which looks like big.
You know exhausts and stuff like that, so you know focal array. You know high-end reputable speaker manufacturers so I'm sure they've like, you know, done the measurements and whatnot on the acoustic design of that thing and it's performance is really quite remarkable. For a little 4-inch design it you know it really puts some higher-end like some larger you know, a 5 or 6 inch jobs to shame. Ah I mean they've even got the front of the die cast.
they're connected to mains. Earth. Look at that. No.
I started be locked I did to look at a bit more upmarket studio monitor there. these Fogle's I'm very very impressed. They really know what they're doing. It's a really is A, you know, quite a quite a significant difference to ones that are not probably not even half the price of these ones. that these aren't hugely expensive - some of the other ones I've looked at, they're not like thousands and thousands of dollars. They're not like, you know, ten times the cost, but you can really see the design and quality differences inside this thing. A shame about the and caps in there, but apart from that, yeah, it's really first-class design and construction. Really quite remarkable diecast cases Oh Sex on a Stick.

I've a pair of Focal bookshelf speakers that will operate for about 90 minutes and then go silent. The power indicator still lights up as normal, but sound just goes away totally.
What could be the problem?
Fantastic but the op amp and electrolytic sud not be that quality. esp op am, there TI 16×4 that is only slightly more expensive compared to the 50 cents 70s op amps
Nice tear down again. I just got a used pair last week and found out, once at home, that the input switch in the back in wired in reverse (i.e. -10db is actually +4db and +4 is -10). I was wondering if it is a manufacture mistake or if it could be because someone serviced them and plugged it wrong. But since both monitors are behaving the same, I reckon it is from the manufacture. Have you seen any weird things on yours?
in my opinion, honestly, focal stuff is an overprized, made cheapo in china piece of garbage, sorry…..but iยดm not entirely sure weather it is heat to head witch bose or already above when it comes to price vs. low-performance…just my two cents. never focal again. PCB is done by foxconn. They mounted another magnet on the woofer to eliminate the the magnetic filedlines which come out of the original woofer magnet, and interfere with any CRT….for how long do we have LCD/LED screens….you can bet from that on the design time…also that foam will turn itself into disgusting tarish stuff over the next decades, and iยดm fairly sure that you donยดt want to need to dig inside after that happened….
That isn't loctite on the screws it is paint to let the assemblers know the screw was final tightened.
PANASONIC or NICHICON would be better cap wise..

Surprised you didn't mention the green wires on the back of the mains connector. The end of their insulation ended just where the insulation from the connector started, so you could see part of the conductor when the wire was bent over. I guess if that's the earth ground it's not a hazard, but it does make the wire more likely to break of they are moved around much (though I guess these speakers don't need to be opened very often).
You mention they have a hum on the tweeter – does that happen even if they arenโt connected to your PC?

so, not finding too much on the hate for these caps, as some posters said, could be that these caps are just right for the specific use. there isnt too much on the forum about hate for these caps, ut i do hear it from you often. just wondering why.
Surprised to see decades old analog technology in the amp, it could be 1998, TL op amps and TDA power amp, not digital, not class D, is this still state of the art in audio?
