Oh Cusco Hello from Manchester UK Is there a Is there a lack of appreciation for the engineers of yesterday who designed the text that today's products are built on? Guess there always is in many respects, But well, a lot of us like to celebrate the bob pieces and the Jim Williams and the hands Kamen's ins of of the world. Which is great because they you know, designed the chips and whatnot that we use all the time to develop our products. But yeah, there's just so many engineers that have just, you know, unnamed engineers. Countless hundreds of thousands of millions of them that have just designed and built products in the background over the years.
Like you know, like this is I think it's some Siemens is it I did that? This is A this was they sent into the mailbag, right? This is like a Siemens I don't I Don't know. Anyway, like a telecoms voice processor for an exchange, right? Something that nobody gives a about, but it enables you know your phone calls to be made and whatnot, right? Look at the complexity of this board. How many engineers? How many nameless engineers worked on this right? How many nameless like is like the person who did this? PCB layout right? Fantastic, right? The people who worked on designing all these custom ASIC chips right? The VHDL under the Verilog engineers that worked on all the the system architects that worked on these The you know somebody? The people that you know they look like one of those Ti modules, right? The people engineers at Ti. Who who made those? The people Who made those, chips.
And these chips. These chips. These chips. Hundreds of chips right after this one board is got to be the result of many thousands of Engineers work.
Yet this is a nothing product that they made in low volume. Like by nothing I mean you know nobody ever knows this exists, right? Except it might be on somebody's may somewhere. Oh I Worked at Siemens and I developed this board. It like right, Crazy, right? There's like thousands of engineers just for the capacitors on the back.
Think of all the capacitors, you know. Think of the engineers that work at the capacitor factory that design all the test equipment for the all the automated production and all the systems. right? There's probably you know, fifty or hundred engineers that just work at the capacitor factory to get you your capacitors, let alone everything else. right? This is nuts.
This is absolutely nuts that you know the amount of complexity thousands upon thousands of engineers worked on. you know, worked in unison, Unknowingly worked in unison to get just this one board. even something simple. like the tech that goes into this calculator for example.
my, you know it's just nuts. So yes, under appreciated. See if that's the thing like imagine you know, work in a company working on that. You can spend years.
An engineer. You probably spent years developing the you know the VHDL and develop these custom Asics and stuff like that. spent years of their career just working on that one bit of silicon, that one chip, That one bit of code right just for this application. Unbelievable. .
maybe because electrical engineer are so closed-source with technologies compared to software engineer especially who are working in web development!
It's not only about electronic's engineers, come on, when is the last time you aprreciated a chemist for example? Think of a simple pill like painkiller and how many people did research for this. Check the molecular formula from any medicine and tell me what you get from this. And then there are more complex medicines. Or should we talk about music? Yes, perfoming musicians are appreciated but what about the composers? Or what about musical instrument manufacturers? I also find quite remarkable we have potable water in such huge networks which doesn't get contaminated. Pilots? Ok pilots are on the other side, a lot of time are appreciated by being applauded and then they hate it, go and figure… But how many people appreciate aircraft designers?
People want to be appreciated thinking what they do is difficult but I am not sure if they want to appreciate other sectors, everything is difficult.
Personally, I appreciate everything, I find this world full of amazingly designed stuff and yes, thank you electronic's engineers! (and chemists, and aircraft designers etc…)
I read something in a book once, I think it was "Politics" of David Runciman, which says that politicians have a pretty hard job too like trying to keep a balance so we don't kill each other, and when they feel underappreciated they consider we are imbeciles…
You bet your backside there is….& our wages have continued to shrink along with the value of the stuff we work on. As stuff becomes disposable so have we…
Man, you got my heart here. In under 4 minutes you condensed Marx's Capital and the whole drama of modern world: knowledge is underappreciated.
there are so many people who have no idea about what engineers do. I tell them I'm studying electrical engineering, they ask me if i can fix their lights at home. Bro, like come on. can we have some respect considering we literally created the modern world. btw, i told that person engineers wouldn't waste their time on your frivolous tasks. They've got a world to run.
👑
What's sad about engineers is we go to school for so long in a difficult field and it's usually a pretty decent living, but in many ways we're also "overhead" that corporations would like to get rid of when and if at all possible, i.e. your job is to make the work easier…and quite possibly eliminate your job and/or those of many others' in the process; you're a "means to an end" for the business types in the corner office & shareholders to make gobs of money off the work you do. & if you wanna make real money yourself, you've gotta have ownership/stake in the company and/or rise up to management…which in many ways is a very different type of job than engineering.
There's something that shows from this "lack of apprectiation" though.
That these engineers all made a flawless job of getting everything to work. So much so that people, even other engineers don't even THINK about what's going on, just take it for granted (again, they expect it, because the engineers, machinists, technicians, truck drivers, everyone else involved did a stellar job)
Big big companies have the resources to do some unreasonable things。 especially in the old days, some people in charge of management were not closely investigated.
it was me i done the PCB layout of that board
Today I was asked by a neighbor to look at a water tank system. The filling and emptying sensor was not working properly. The local specialists had been called out no less than 5 + times. At serious cost per visit. Like X3 times the normal going rate, per visit. The pump pressure switch (per on/off cycle) was incorrectly set. And the booster tank is not in the correct position. Also, the wrong pipes have been used. It took me 5 minutes to fix the sensor position. The rest will need another visit. Another so-called alarm tech did not know the difference between batteries in series and parallel. And what the differences in voltage would be. I read that for every lawyer Japan produces It produces a 1000 thousand engineers. Thanks for this. And kind regards and greetings from Africa.
Nice board
Where I work, we have engineer appreciation day every other Friday.
It is a cultural problem. Within English speaking culture, there is a rejection of people that know anything. Such "cool" people are more interested in "fitting in", smoking marijuana and watching the super bowl. Engineers overwhelm the "cool" mentality of the people that call us, "nerds" or "boffins". I have noticed that in Latin culture, in Italy, Mexico and Brazil, engineers seem to be considered more honorably than in our "advanced" "first world" countries. As for me, the least "cool" of all, I like to listen to engineers expound upon their trials and tribulations. Indeed, at 62, I can tell a few stories of my own!
I appreciate the skills, knowledge and talent of engineers. What needs to change is everything around them. Millisecond deadlines drive engineers to solve problems in a quick, dirty, "just this once" way that gets used six or seven times, a team of 40 people get used to using it, it gets written into a standard, that standard gets adopted worldwide, another team looking to do something slightly different picks up that standard and has to break their spine to fit through it, that project goes wildly popular and all of society shifts over to it, and soon we're running all of society on a goddamn networking protocol meant to hook ten terminals to a mainframe and there's nothing we can do about the ten billion security holes and vulnerabilities in it. Thanks engineers! Fuck off, managers.
It's soooooooooo true! I am a Firmware Engineer and never get appreciated. No body understands the difficulties and distresses of doing low level programming, especially debugging. And what I received are complaints, blames, and all kind of shits!
Well, maybe engineers are under-appreciated in terms of public recognition. But I'm sure all those 1000s of people got their decent salaries and benefits, bought nice houses, cars, sent their children to expensive schools etc. Is that a form of appreciation?
Looking for engineer: Must be able to work 14 hours a day for minimum wage
Shout out to UoM EEE!
This might be one of the most important videos on youtube.
Won't somebody please think of the capacitors!
Sorry, bad joke.
