Dave finally got hit by the dreaded Adpocalypse demonetisation on his Minute Physics / Bill Nye video.
Also a look at the EEVblog advertising revenue and if its has been hit by the Adpocalypse advertising revenue drop in general. Views are compared with revenue to show any drop in ad revenue over time.

Hi A lot of people have always asked me over the last couple of months of have I been hit by the end apocalypse? Have my videos been D monetized like a ton of youtubers have and the answer is has always been no I haven't had a single video in my entire back catalogue hit by this D monetization thing and I just responded to someone on Twitter and then I checked two seconds they saying that and check two seconds later and tada. what do you know? my first D monetized video here. It is the dreaded yellow dollar sign here. not suitable for all advertisers and some channels have had practically every one of their videos Rd monetized in this way even before they're released.

For example, like Phil DeFranco who I've done a video I covering this before. you know practically every one of his videos he gets. You know, D monetize before they're even released. It's ridiculous.

Anyway, I have my first one and it just so happens to be not quite my usual content. It's about the minute physics and Bill Nye promoting rate on solar thing. So I have no idea what flagged this, Whether or not it was just the YouTube algorithm that you know there was like something in there. um, that did it or whether or not somebody flagged it.

Maybe there's a fan of minutephysics I Don't? Well, you know I don't know. Um, who did this or just one of my own viewers didn't like it and they flagged it I'm not actually sure how it works, so anyway, it's most likely the YouTube algorithm has deemed something in here to be of offense to people and it's not suitable for all over time. I mean it's just ridiculous I mean come on. a video just talking about.

you know, Minutephysics. having you know a paid sponsored ad spot. it's just crazy. Oh, you know.

Anyway, I don't get it any. Look, here's the keywords down here if you want to have a look like Minutephysics rate on Solar. But there's nothing like Equity crowdfunding like there's there's nothing offensive in my title or the keywords or anything like that. It's just nuts.

So I don't know that's high been flagged. It's my first ever D monetized video. Yeah, like well, night slightly incorrect. There's a Patreon live test I did and that was d monetized for some reason.

but I wouldn't like I wouldn't know like that wasn't even a release video, it was just a test. So either I don't know what happened there. but I have actually gone through and you can actually go up here and here we go. You can not monetized.

Okay, so you can look at videos which are not monetized. I do have some, but they're mostly live videos so I'm not sure what's going. Yeah, like the the Juno thing when I like I was doing some aborted tests with live hangouts and it didn't work properly. These were like demon like.

actually not monetize actually. I didn't even bother enabling monetization. The art of electronics that was a copyright claim. that was fair enough, but no basically issued car includes copyrighted content.
Yeah, that was fair enough. I had I was playing some music through the speaker's there which I was reviewing. but basically that's art, not monetize. sorry limited or no ads.

sorry wrong Search limited or no ads here you go. This is the new thing and Patreon live test. I've got another one. I've got another one that was my number one hundredth video triple digit retrospective.

so I have no idea why that one was flagged either. but ya know it's like out of my like twelve hundred videos I've got on my main channel like there's only three of them. so like it's it's certainly not a big deal. Um, so I'm gonna go through, request a review.

Here we go. So and I'm going to limit it. Monetize with ads limited or no ads due to content identified is not suitable for all advertisers. Ridiculous.

Unbelievable. Your video remains fully playable. legible, blah blah. Why did this happen? Avoid ads that don't align with their brand.

For example, they may choose not to advertise and conduct sexually suggestive. I'm Bill Nye Pretty sexy guy, right? He includes bad language I didn't swear once in the video or is considered controversial controversy having sponsored spots on YouTube videos. Anyway, if you think our automated system got yeah it I think it's only automated system. so I don't think anyone can actually flag the video and cause this I don't think so anyway.

so I think it must be the automated system that's done that Anyway, requests manual review. There you go. I'll hit that I confirm the video is suitable for all advertisers. You bet your ass it is suitable.

sorry I swore ass ass for you Americans There you go. So a request review. But the problem with this is that these videos are for content for content producers is they're typically flagged straightaway Even as I said, even before release they get flagged and then when you release it or it's flagged within like hours of its release. that's the peak time of when you actually get all of your views and things like that.

So if we go in here and have a look at let's say my 1k micro magic video our will have all the stats probably should have look now I should have looked at a longer one but it's an older one because the stats don't update very quickly. So let's go and have a look at the $7 component to know that's probably know that got shared around. Let's have a look at say the Trs-80 computer video and boom we'll see the see how the peak that watch the views. There you go there's a big peak and then it tails off.

That's how practically every YouTube video is. unless it goes viral and gets a second peak or you know, a third peak or whatever. And if your video is d monetized in that time period there, then you screwed. You've lost it.

So it takes me a day or two to appeal these videos. These are disputes. So yeah, I'll probably win and I'll probably it'll be Romano ties. But I will lose this video.
Still new and it's still been, you know, viewed by not only my channel, but also our minutephysics people, our viewers, and stuff like that. So yeah, I'm gonna miss out on the monetization from all that. Speaking of which, a lot of people have asked, yeah, have I been hit by the Ad Pocalypse either in the yellow D monetization or simply less ad revenue and the answer is no and let me go and show you my ad revenue I'll go straight in I'm not going to hide anything straight in my analytics I've done a video which I'll link it at the end showing you exactly how much I you earn on YouTube So it's not a secret and YouTube have cleared me to do this so it's not a problem. They're not going to shut me down for revealing So estimated ad revenue Here we go estimated out of revenue and this is for the last month.

We can go back a couple. When did the Ad Pocalypse start? I Don't know, let's just go back a while, but you can see like it like a lot of channels are dying because they've dropped like eighty ninety percent plus in ad revenue and I just haven't seen that. So it's been. it's been fine for me.

You know it's just the usual highs and lows. There's like is that like the last year or something that's got to be close to it and if you can I will do a role in seven-day average on there. So there you go and no problems whatsoever. So I have not been hit by that.

It's just my usual ups and downs around. December You always get a peak around there because that's when the advertising budgets of companies. You know end of end of calendar year advertising budgets come through. Well they want to clear out their advertising budget and stuff like that so everything's fine and damn you can see how much I get from YouTube are red I think it's about 25 percent or something.

So and if we compare metrics, if we compare that to views, let's overlay this. I haven't done this before. Let's overlay it and see. Yep, look.

So it's not like my monetization has dropped off-mic My views have stayed the same monetization stropped off so they correlate very well. So I have not been hit at all. Unfortunately, a lot of big youtubers who don't even do you know Italy Who cares if the contents contribution controversial. Big deal? You know it's that's what YouTube's always been.

It's crazy. Anyway, no I've not been hit and I just got my first video. so I thought I'd share with you anyway if you want to. If you know of any channels that have been completely destroyed by this, just link them in down below discuss anyway I hope you enjoyed it.

Catch you next time. Oh and I'll let you know what happens. I'm sure I'll oh oh we know just it'll in a day or two. follow me on.

Twitter I'll announce it I'm sure it'll be fine, but yeah, I lose that money until then. Oh well.

The YouTube bot block "Bill Nye" word , because they think it's a Flat Earth video ! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Isaiah40:22 says:

Apparently a good rule of thumb to not get demonetized, is never post video's that disagree with the official narrative. YouTube will not tolerate anyone who tries to wake up the zombies and sheeple. Like exposing Bill Nye as a failed mechanical engineer/actor. And never ever mention our motionless flat Earth we live on or George Soros' war on America.

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars What You Haven't Seen says:

A YouTube employee on on Reddit provided some insight into this. A machine learning bot is doing the flagging, hence its ability to "scan" your video instantaneously. Appeals are all reviewed manually (by humans) and the appeals process is a crucial part of the machine learning algorithm, as the outcome of appeals train the bot on boundary conditions. (YouTube is encouraging content creators to appeal everything they think is not advertiser-unfriendly and meets their 'Community Guidelines'. Also, I hate this… but I get it.)

I feel offended by the direction youtube (and google in general) is heading. Giving in to the trolls and corporations, hurting internet users in the process…

Proud of you Dave, gary from Scotland.

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Pat Sullivan says:

You dissed the left's science hero… Bill Nye the Vagina Guy!

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Freeman Logic says:

Is this honestly video worthy? Your video got demonetized then half am hour later none of this 10 minute video was relevant anymore because it was monetized again. Oh boy, you've really been hit hard by the "adpocalypse".

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars xoftc says:

Maybe its because the title has the word "promotion" in it and the thumbnail pic has the text "marketing" in it.

I only have a hobby channel but one time I made a video about encoder strips and the video was immediately flagged as unsuitable for ads. Then I changed the title not to include the word "strip" and it was automatically unflagged after a few minuets.

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars MeMad Max says:

The title of the videos has the biggest giveaway of why they got demo'd: bill nye and wonder woman…. Both hot topic leftist BS crap going on…

I think its going around! Ive had several over the last few weeks. my last one was using music i created using a phone/tablet app. My song was created in 2014, uploaded to my soundcloud 2015, but their song was created or uploaded to youtube this year. So i disputed it and after a couple days they sent an email stating the copyright claim was removed. i was pretty ticked off since Ive been working hard to not have any copyright claims. Ive not monetized my account but i might someday. Glad you've gotten yours straightened out.

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Synth Punch says:

    Not a big issue now…

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mathias Mann says:

My hunch on that: it's because Bill Nye is known as an activist about climate change and YouTube will demonetize anything that contains something controversial, even when it's just a name.

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Bert says:

Ok, i havent seen the solar vid yet, so now im going to turn off adblock and watch it ๐Ÿ˜€

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars RustyRetroBasement says:

Thumbs up for the ass ass thing
Damn this demonitization stuff is so hillarious
Just another way to devaluate the hard work of guys like you who try to make a living of educating people
    This is really a crime.
They should really introduce a way to prove that you do high quality content like dave and get more money per view than those suckers who film cats and put funny music on it

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars MrRedstone says:

Doesn't this "not suitable for all advertisers" thing mean that any advertiser can just tell YouTube "this is not suitable for my ads", so they don't need to pay the YouTuber but can still show their ads? Seems like a very exploitable thing. Even if it's not exploitable, it's still bullshit and YouTube needs to get their shit together. Advertisers are not babies that get upset if there's cursing or gore in videos, and YouTube doesn't need to monitor every single video in case they might upset an advertiser. It's not about upsetting viewers, it's just about the chance of videos upsetting advertisers and treating them like children.

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Seegal Galguntijak says:

That video probably isn't suitable for Rayton Solar to advertize on, so maybe that's what happened ๐Ÿ˜‰

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Seegal Galguntijak says:

#100 has "Wonder Woman" in its title. That is probably deemed sexist nowadays (I know, it's stupid).

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Lionel Burrows says:

Ownage Pranks has just posted about this.

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars German Tool Reviews says:

Hey Dave, I had this happen to me on my most recent video about rebuilding an old 1930s ratchet. I read somewhere that it is actually the thumbnail that is triggering these false positives more than anything so after choosing one of the auto-generated one it suddenly became monetized again. You would think that they would test this because rolling it out. I think we have to release our videos as private first to see if it triggers any of the algorithms and then push it to public after a couple of hours.

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars plasmar1 says:

without throwing to many conspiracy theories(course this was an inside job), "marketing" tag, algorithm probably assumed it was marketing related and so it's kinda counter productive to advertise on what maybe an ad in itself or similar

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tezcax says:

It's probably because of Bill Nye. Bill Nye is a left wing hack nowadays and most videos about him are criticizing his transgender stuff or how he hates white people having children, so citing him probably causes instant demonetization despite your video having nothing to do with this.

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars SnopFop says:

@Worthabuyguys Has taken a huge hit by this! I think that his main channel @Mackscorner is also hit.

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Kevin Loughin says:

I hope it's not flaggable! That would cause chaos by enabling trolls with a weapon they could actually harm us with.

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rowan Doherty says:

Wait… Wasn't the Art of Elec video basically advertising the book? And why can't you claim fair use on the music in the speaker test video. Weird.

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Carl Valentin says:

You are an honest guy. Not suitable for capitalism.

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars mbaker335 says:

The simplest algorithm would be to scan comments. Trigger on keywords. Quick simple and probably 95% accurate.

  27. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars EEVblog says:

UPDATE: 30 minutes after releasing this video and disputing the claim, the video has been magically monetised again! (no explanation given). And yes, this video is currently monetised ok.
