Ebay Australia is BROKEN!, and Dave isn't happy.
Half the test equipment categories are either screwed up or not functional. What the hell is going on?

Hi just a quick blurb video I wanted to show you something that I found on eBay I was listing I actually set up a new eBay store just to list my multimeter the other day and I haven't used a Bey in a while, haven't searched for test gear and stuff like that cuz normally I like I search for gear to tear down or get a repair or something like haven't used in a while and it says too often. not only have all changed eBay Australia Anyway, which is what I'm talking about here. If it is applicable to eBay US and other countries then please let me know but II buy Australia since it will all change all the categories. But not only that it seems to be like broken half the stuff does not work half the categories.

and let me show you what I'm talking about. Normally if you want to certain you know you can just search for something which is fine. but I'm not too worried about that today. What I'm worried about is the categories now.

So you go shop by category, you go down here. Now this is eBay Australia I Know it's different for different countries. U.s. in particular has more categories for Teske and things like that, but you go down to electrical here.

Okay, and these are all the existing. These are all the categories. Okay, and these categories have been here for like a decade. They've been here since, you know eBay first started.

Okay, these are the categories that I'm used to seeing on eBay Australia So if we want to go in and search for multimeters, for example, I would choose meters. So I go in here. So it's so the the category listing is: industrial electrical meters. Fine, nothing's changed.

Okay, except that they have change the layout to this wheat. You know this wanky shopping cart thing which I don't like. But normally you hit this refine results button which used to be over here. but you hit this and usually it'll show you like the usual detailed list.

Okay and still. this stupid shopping cart. Wah-wah fail. If I could find my file button I hit the damn thing.

maybe I'll just go like that. Sorry for those using headphones that's gonna leave a pattern anyway. Um, let's have a look. Look that there's nothing here.

It is broken right? There is nothing in in through electrical meters. It's ridiculous. But if we go back here. okay and the power supply's is the same signal generator that is the same I believe.

But if we go into oscilloscopes, it will actually work. Okay, Oscilloscopes, Industrial electrical oscilloscopes, refine results, we're in. Look where it's displaying oscilloscopes. Okay, so that all looks fine and dandy.

Okay, but watch this right. You click on an oscilloscope. Okay, this is from a local seller here in Sydney right? And but look, all the categories are changed. Look at the top here.

it's got industrial electrical and test equipment, test measurement and inspection analyzers, and data acquisition, oscilloscopes and vector scopes. It's like they've got two entirely separate categories of categories. Like two entirely section like displayed categories. It's ridiculous.
Okay, and if we hit oscilloscopes and vector scopes for example, then okay, it goes down and shows them. But let's go back here. Okay, let's go. Industrial Electrical Okay, and we're back to the old category.

Look, we're back to the old category here. Okay and sure. and look. the industrial.

All these have changed again. Okay, so let's go back even further. Let's go back all the way, right? And let's here. We go right.

meters. Okay, let's go into meters and are there. Sorry, there's nothing. So really, they've let the work experience kids loose.

Anyway, Electrical and Test equipment. Hang on. No. I Want to go all the way back I Want to go all the way back I Want to show you this.

Okay, I will go to Industrial Electrical Meters Okay, and from this product page. Okay, I can choose say this. unity clamp meter here. Okay, so I can open that I open that in another tab you saw before that refine results did not work.

It gave me no things whatsoever. Okay, so we're in Industrial Electrical Meters. If we open up that product, Bingo. we instantly appear in Industrial Electrical and Test Equipment.

Test Measurement and Inspection Test meters and detectors, Electric circuit and multimeters and multimeters. It's like going through to that category. Okay, and once again, if we click on this multimeters thing, I'm used to doing this I do this all the time on a searching eBay stuff I Like oh okay. I'll go back a category and search.

So I go into multimeters and there's nothing. There's nothing there. What the hell is going on? They've completely broken the category system in eBay Australia It's ridiculous. Anyway, I've listed my new Broman multimeter for example and it forced me to use all these new categories when I listed, it couldn't just go Electrical Industrial Electrical meters.

couldn't that I've been doing for like a decade. couldn't do that I have to now put it into these. you know, one, two, three, four, five, six nested things before I can get in there and once again, if I hit other If people find this okay, they search for my meter just like I did here and they go okay. yeah.

and I don't I buy this one. I Want to go into multimeters? There's nothing there. yet. it'll work.

For some categories, it will. Electric circuits and multimeters work I'm not sure. Nope. Nothing in the higher-level category.

Nothing like a test meters and detectors. Will we eventually get there? Yeah, We eventually get there. and then we got all these weird categories which have never shown up on eBay Australia before. They've let the work experience kids loose on the code.

Again, unbelievable and they're broken broken like all the categories and stuff. Anyway, it's just ridiculous. Search still seems to work okay, but the category browsing system broken. so if it's but I've only checked eBay Australia don't know other eBay us and eBay UK and the other countries if they're bro of change recently to leave it down in the comments I'd love to know whether or not this is an isolated thing to Ebay Australia not all.
They're in some proce if you know they're in some process of changing categories and merging them with say, the U.s. ones or something because as I said, the U.s. always has had in the test gear category a lot more categories available than we've had on eBay Australia and it was caught on like a weird cross mix between them. but it always worked.

Those categories when you clicked on these categories up the top, they always worked and all of a sudden they have to look like I just went a category down the side. These categories down the side have always worked frequency. Guess some of them work. For example, um, oscilloscopes still works.

If I could find the damn thing, what's it under now? sorry I forget anyway I Like a few of them still work. but meters for example, with frequency counters and power supplies and things like that signal generators does not work. It's crazy. So I don't know there could be a there could be a good, there could be a silver lining to this.

It could mean that you might be able to pick up a few more bargains now on eBay because if people are searching via categories and it's all screwing up and not working properly, then there could be less competition to get test gear and things like that because test gear in Australia is actually quite hard to get I usually have to do mostly overseas ones like I would search. for example if I mean mouldy if I mean test gear down here, I would have to actually go into a specific category down here. let's go into the clamp meter. let's go into the test meters and detectors which actually lists us.

something go down here I would a if I'm searching for stuff I would choose worldwide for example. so this finds only the suppliers that will ship to Australia So and then I can go into say if I'm searching for something for a repair video or something I would go for search for parts non-working and that sort of still seems to you know, still seems to do the business so it looks like it's still okay from that aspect. but categories seems just completely. something has seriously gone and broke in eBay Australia So anyway, hopeless.

So if you know what's going on, leave it in. the comments down below. Catch you next time.

Are you sure this isn't just a matter of people listing an item under multiple categories? I know that when I list items for sale, I have the option to list them in multiple categories at once.

Half the electronic components and more than 90% of lithium batteries on this site are fake ripoffs. If you want to get something fake, just buy a 10000mah 18650 battery. (Remember to leave negative feedback).

It's incredibly how broken Youtube, Ebay and various Google properties and other major companies' sites are. it's a sign of something cock-eyed, I'm sure.

I've gotten so used to the nonsense system that we live in today, that, …it's almost a surprize when something works the way I would expect it to. I think I have encountered this weird jenky glitch on eBay, because I'm on it a lot. But, I'm just like, …pssh, thanks eBay…

–I appreciate that they're trying to compete with Amazon, but, it's like they inserted 10 pounds of Shit into a 5 pound bag.

i hate the daily deals or discounted items cuz you'll see items that are 80 percent off or whatever something crazy for example a ps4 at 80 percent off but somehow it is still 350 dollars which is the regular price for that product then when you look at the posted original price it is jacked up to almost 1000 dollars. i've always preferred ebay over amazon but i must say i've finally given it a chance recently and i am never going back to ebay.

LOL the funny thing is that This happens all the time. For a place that gets lots of hits and tones of sales I cant believe how bad it is from time to time. most of the time during updates.
they should take a note from amazon that looks the same for the last ten pulse years. I make all my $$ selling on eBay so stuff like this can kill my income in no time!

well. ive just used ebay here. they did do the convoluted labeling however the sub results actually work fairly well. lol so maybe its just something theyre working on and may end up fixing shortly in other countries? idk why it should need 10 subresults to bring up a single item tho. thats just nuts.

eBay in the US, is broken, too. Not in the same way. I've called their phone number, but the support is next to useless. Different days, different bugs. A couple of times, they've told me, not to use the Chrome browser. But the bugs still exist, when I switch to Firefox. BTW, there's a little war between eBay and Google, since Google changed their search ranking, a little while back. Google search has been evolving. Even, now, if you do a Google "shopping" search, it will bring up a list, that looks a lot like ebay, but from many vendor sights, including eBay, and Amazon. eBay may be dying, and can now only afford 'script kiddies' to do the 'programming'. If you own shares of eBay stock, now is the time to sell.

The US Ebay search quit working properly a while back and the problem still persists.

ebay searches are broken. local searches give you world wide searches. also eBay send me mails about things I am selling telling me to buy my own stuff. I use eBay UK. the eBay software had no joined up intelligence and just shows a lack of logic. it also proves that even though computers use logic to make decisions, they can still be programmed to ignore logic and make incorrect statements.

In the USA meters are in:
    Business & Industrial>Electrical & Test Equipment>Test, Measurement & Inspection>Test Meters & Detectors>Electric Circuit & Multimeters>Multimeters

The categories are populated when I jump back to Multimeters, so they work now in the USA.

I can't find the eevblog Brymen in the USA ebay, searching for exactly that. Can I buy this meter in the USA? Don't you ship to the USA?

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ryan S says:

Amazon bad for this too you search something but get all this other crap you don't want it's like say you search for a shirt you'll get all this other crap that has nothing to do with a shirt.

@EEVblog Dear Dave, What happens when you select Industrial>Electrical>Test Equipment?

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars TheExileFox says:

This looks like a migration issue. Should be fixed ASAP

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars sunnohh says:

And its not just something that will be fixed by clearing cache and cookies and or one of those extensions causing it?

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Are Tysland says:

Heh, I can’t find your meter on ebay at all (neither com or com.au). Guess ebay filters the results based on where the search was done from too.

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David K says:

It looks like they're adding new categories but (there are good reasons for this) they are not updating the categories for existing items. I would expect all items to have the new categories after they have expired and been re-listed. Thats probably within 30 or 60 days. I dont know the maximum duration for a listing. They should have tried to do it better but it might have been far too much work. Changing database schemas without losing data can be a really ugly job for something as big and dynamic as ebay

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars CoolKoon says:

Well, personally I've never used the categories for ages. I stopped using them when they began to be ridiculously overcomplicated (i.e. about a decade or so ago). Ever since then I'm only searching for my heart's desire, to avoid stroking every time I go to eBay (which I definitely would if I'd have to go through the ridiculously complicated and really retarded category structure). Mind you, I'm talking about the 'murican eBay (because that's where all the Chinese sellers are :P), but this crap seems to be dribbling down to all the international eBay versions too..
