This is a how to video of how to rebuild a Dana 300 transfer case. We used a simple rebuild kit with new bearings, seals, and intermediate shaft. Hope this video helps and if you liked it be sure to subscribe for the rest of the CJ 7 build along with weekly uploads.
The gears looked great when you popped the inspection cover. Why rebuild? Put new seals in it and let it roll. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
When I saw it was young guys making this video I was skeptical. After watching I am truly impressed. Great job and great video. Keep up the good work.
Good video. Will be beneficial for my rebuild. Convinced me to buy a press. Just ask that you guys wear eye protection when working with a press or pounding some love with a hammer. Seen too many freak accidents causing unnecessary injury when it could've been easily prevented. Got a lot of life left still and don't want you going through it blind.
Damn…after seeing all those moving parts think ima bow out of going mine(rebuild). Pretty sure I would end up with extra pieces..
Great job and a super attitude. I have 50 years experience as a mechanic, auto mechanic instructor plus running a shop with 10 mechanics. Everyone has to do their first
experience just doing it themselves. All "experts" have had their share of mistakes. Mistakes are one of life's great teachers. I still have older people complain about transmission
or gearbox repair prices and I always tell them to just buy a rebuild kit a shop manual and do it yourself. The majority will not bother are scared and don't learn or gain the confidence of doing it themselves.
You mentioned a video you were watching during this rebuild. Can you please add a link to this resource in your description?
If you put the races in the freezer for awhile they"ll shrink enough to go in nice and easy, good vid.
Great job on the rebuild! I did the same rebuild back in 1986, and the center shaft was a pain back then, too. Memories…
Kid, you need to CLEAN the outside BEFORE opening it up internally. Take a pan or plastic bucket. Fill it with some Diesel. Take an old paint brush and clean the exterior first. Diesel will cut all that grease and grime with ease. It's cheap and hardly any fumes compared to canned death like brake cleaner LOL. Then open it up for a rebuild. Your way you will get grease, sand, grit, grime, sludge, dirt and so on inside. Think hospital clean for a proper rebuild.
Great job! This is something I will be doing in the future as an upgrade on my 79 CJ7 Project. Good Stuff!!! Thanks for sharing.
Stumbled across this video as I'm about to swap a dana 300 into my tj and twin stick it. Great video! Noticed on y'all's channel that at least one of y'all is a Jesuit student. I graduated with the class of '15 and it's great to see a Jesuit student getting this hands on with his vehicles. Hope the car club is still a thing and that you're leading it! That club certainly needed some better leadership and organization when I was there.
It nice to see young guys getting their hands dirty and doing it yourself instead of getting someone to do it for you. It's the best way to learn. I just happened on this looking for Dana 300 rebuild videos and so far great job. I will be doing a 4:1 gear swap in my 300 down the road with a twin stick conversion also.
By the way, the "thingy" the bearing rides on is called a "race".
I ain't much of an off road guy, but I'm enjoying this vid a lot, I love it when mechanisms are taken apart and rebuilt, it is so soothing. and I really like the honesty in your format, there is no pretense of knowing it all, just a couple of enthusiasts doing cool stuff.
