#2021 #Youtube

Hi, Yes, I'm not in the lab. I am somewhere in a deserted, almost deserted beach. There's a couple of people out there, but I'm on the beach. No, this isn't a green screen because well, I'm wearing a green shirt and well, there it is there.

It is Beach Beach. So it's 2021 and well, of course 2020 was. well, it was 20 20.. So well we survived 20 or 20 and that was something.

But what I want to talk about is 2021 and some changes I will Not only do I see happening, but I'm actually going to help make happen as well as I've been doing for many years. And of course, I've been a Youtuber for 10 years. Almost practically 10 years full time now. Been doing it for 12 years.

One of the old guards. I've got over 2 000 videos or something. Ridiculous, not just by the official numbers. Anyway, ridiculous amount of videos and I'm still a Youtuber.

What I wanted to talk about is, uh, basically, as I've done over the years, talk about, uh, the state of the alternative platforms Because just like, uh, you shouldn't care where I'm shooting this from. I don't care where you're watching it from, I don't care who you are, I don't care what platform you use. I support all these different platforms out there and have done for many years. and I've taken some crap for supporting different platforms other than Youtube over the years as well.

And I simply don't care where you're watching me from how you're watching me, who you are, what politics you follow, or any other Bs like that, I don't care. But as you've heard recently, there's been, you know, lots of talk about censorship and all sorts of uh, stuff. d Platforming. Although this has been going on for years now.

and of course, that's the big problem these days. Uh, Youtube, Twitter, the Facebooks, and whatever. Uh, you know, huge tech platform you're talking about. They have ultimate power over whether or not, uh, you're allowed to have a Youtube channel.

What? You're allowed to say what, You're allowed to post all sorts of things, and whether or not they delete your video, whether or not they monetize it, or don't monetize it, of course. So in late 2020, they said, well, even if you demonetize your entire channel, we're going to put ads on it. And of course, I haven't had a lot of people. uh, contact me saying well Dave, you had your videos are just filled with ads because I did long con form content videos.

of course you know, half an hour, 45 minutes? Something like that, they could be filled with seven, eight, ten ads or more. I basically have no control over this, so of course I I recommend that if you are watching on Youtube. I I have. I don't see ads myself because I have Youtube premium.

So if you don't know Youtube premium actually you don't get any ads at all and then I believe it's about 55 or something of your Youtube premium goes to the actual content that you watch. So every creator that you watch it's a secret source algorithm, secret squirrel. You don't know exactly how much, but but apparently the majority of the money that you give will go to the content creators whose videos you actually watch. And about 20 25 of my uh, Youtube income comes from premium content subscribers.
but I know that not everyone wants to, you know, has premium. In fact, I did a poll over my audience and found about 25 of my uh, Youtube audience actually have premiums, so it's a reasonably large percentage, but it's not there and I can understand if you don't want to pay to watch and that's fine. But what we're going to talk about today is if you don't want to pay, if you're sick of the ads, or you're sick of censorship and you're sick of politics, or you're sick of whatever it is to do with uh, the platforms, I'm going to show you the alternatives that I have available and I have done for years now because as I did a video in 2020, even innocent electronics channels uh, can just get deleted. Poof gone for no reason whatsoever on Youtube.

Jordan Pyre's channel of course got a famously just vanished disappeared and then you know, magically a couple of days later reinstated with no reason given whatsoever. And of course from day one on Youtube, I've been aware that you know my channel could just vanish. Like so, I've developed a different income sources where that isn't an issue for me, so I don't have to worry about that, but many other Youtube content creators do. so.

Unfortunately, unlike even some other content creators, I don't won't judge you at all for what platform you want to watch me on. I don't care your reasons why it doesn't matter. I don't care who you are, I don't care why you watch or on what platform you watch it. All I care is that you watch and you you know give quality comments and interact.

And or even if you just want to watch and you never interact, That's cool. Unfortunately, there's many other Youtube channels out there that have, well had a real issue with going on other platforms for either political reasons or whatever. and once again, I don't judge them. But I have tried to convince many other electronics, uh, content tech content creators to come over to alternative platforms and I'm slowly getting success on that.

uh, as we'll see. So let's check out all the platforms that I'm on, or at least most of them I could be on obscure ones I've forgotten about. All right, what we've got here is Odyssey. And yes, for those who don't know, it is library.

Library slash Odyssey. think of it as exactly the same thing. Library is the Un or Lbr? Why is the underlying technical? uh? protocol? In fact, it is actually an Internet protocol just like Http is an internet protocol. Well, Lbry is a layer a technical layer of the Internet.

It works in exactly the same way, but it's a bit more, uh, complicated of course. And there's so. there's the Library app and there's Library.tv But basically Odyssey.com has taken over from uh, Library dot Tv. So if you want to follow me and you want to, uh, you know, talk about the platform, talk about in terms of Odyssey.
Uh, for like a Youtube alternative, I just hit 50 000. but already I'm up to 51 684 followers on our Odyssey. So this is getting to be a huge platform and this is my number one, uh, alternative platform. And for those who aren't aware, in case you missed, I did an announcement was it on community was on the Youtube community tab.

I'm actually starting to make some exclusive content on alternative platforms because it's one thing to be on those these alternative platforms. But if there's no other reason, uh, to watch it other than no ads. Of course, if you want no ads, you're sick of the ads on Youtube, you don't want to pay for the premium, then you can get, uh, you can go on to any of these alternative platforms and watch my content for free and I will be doing more and more exclusive content on these platforms I won't yet go to Like guaranteeing that one in every three videos or whatever will be on an alternative platform. I'll just do it when I feel like I'm on those alternative platforms.

So if you're not following me on Odyssey, then you're missing out on other content. Like recently, I just did this exclusive teardown here and I did actually announce this on my community tab, but it's a teardown of a Yamaha Soundbar if you want to see that that's already got. um, almost five and a half thousand views here and lots of comments. I'm getting 46 comments I just post on Twitter today.

Some of my best comments are now coming on the Odyssey platform, so it's absolutely, uh, fantastic. People are coming over and it's just great. Anyway, follow me on Odyssey and you'll get any exclusive content that I actually, uh, release on these alternative platforms because I want to help these alternative platforms grow because if all of our content is just on these big ass tech platforms that you can get censored, deleted, whatever, or flagged. My channel could be gone today if I get three strikes in a row.

If I get three reports or what, even if they're bogus reports, my channel is automatically deleted after 12 years. It's just it's absolutely ridiculous. So Odyssey is the best, most robust, uh platform technically that you can still remove videos from Odyssey.com but from the underlying library protocol, I won't go into the technical details. it's like you basically can't So basically, unless there's like a court order to take down our content, it's not going to happen on Odyssey.

So channels are not going to vanish. Content's not going to vanish for whatever reason. And the great thing about Odyssey is that all my content is full. uh, 1080p quality.

There can be some issues in regards to like it's not as good as Youtube in terms of uh, like, you know, starting the video and it takes time to buffer it and stuff like that depending on your location, depending on how many people use it. Because Odyssey is actually a decentralized platform. Well, it's both a combination of centralized and decentralized. Odyssey have their own centralized servers, but it's also decentralized so the more people that have it, uh, have the file locally, then can potentially share it just like a think of it like a torrent type system.
So the more people that use it, potentially the better it gets. Which is the great thing about it and decentralized content is I think where we're heading because we can't keep relying on just you know. A couple of the owner of you know, X Company doesn't like you, doesn't like your politics, They don't like your off platform speech or content or whatever or whatever you do, even offline stuff they can just bam. You're gone, you're on the naughty list.

Out you go. And yes, I do actually earn money. A significant amount of money. Potentially more money per view than I do on Youtube.

I earn it on Odyssey in terms of library credits. and I can potentially sell those library credits and then, uh, you know, actually get income that way as well. So it's not. I'm not just doing this as a complete loss leader.

I do actually make money on libraries. I'm I think I'm I think I'm number 12 in the world at the moment. But I am like one of the top channels on Library. and the great thing about Library is that they're very responsive to the feedback.

Very personal. In fact, I helped shape Odyssey.com They include me into it being one of the uh top creators of library uh, previously and I actually got them to show you the influence that an individual creator can have. I actually got them to include a separate section which they've called lab. I wasn't happy with the lab name, but it's it's it's lab so we can go over to the lab section here.

and this is where all the electronic fellow electronics content creators are. In fact, unfortunately, I don't think uh, Lewis Rossman is included here. I have to get that one fixed. Um, but all your favorites are over here.

Bigclive.com Electro Boom! Just announced today that he's joined Odyssey. All his videos are on there. Uh, Louis Rossman. All his videos are on there and he's just done which I'll link in a link in the Odyssey video and excellent.

Uh, sorry. Internet's not that great here. Doing it through my phone, he's just announced to his audience. Odyssey is the platform that he wants you to be the alternative platform that you want to be on.

He's got 330 comments on that video already like it's It's just nuts. People are using Odyssey like crazy. Anyway, I highly recommend. Odyssey is my number one alternative, uh, to Youtube.

But all my content, as I've done previous videos on, is auto uploaded to all these other channels as well. should you wish to use them. we've got Vimeo. Vimeo has almost zero traction in terms of, uh, local users.
It basically it's but all my content. Look, it's auto uploaded there. Everything's there, but I don't think anyone ever comments. I never visit, but if you want to watch them there, if you like Vimeo, go for it.

Now here's a new one which is little known. Almost nobody knows about it. Utreon and it's very new. I actually like Utreon.

I like the user interface, it seems to work well. Unfortunately, my my content has been on there for like six months or something and they really haven't seemed to have promoted it. Um, much if at all. So um, it's I've only got 100 followers on there so far, but I like Utron.

Give it a go if you like it. My content's all on there. And then we have the alter Youtube alternative. Everyone loves to hate Bit Shoot and uh, this is the platform that like before Odyssey came along, I thought I the only one with a chance at the moment to actually you know to be a viable uh alternative and there's lots of people on bid.

Shoot. Um, and I had my issues with Beat You and I do have 2 000 subscribers on there, but I really don't suggest it anymore because I I actually talked to the uh, you know the heads of Bit Shoot and tried to explain to them hey, look at your front page. It's not a good look and let's just random front page at the moment. it's all you know look, I won't even go through it and it's just not a good look.

When I tried to convince fellow content creators to go on to Bit Shoot, they all went oh yeah, look, I'll go over, check it out, I'll give it, you know, have a look. They went over there and went. no way. I'm out of here, right? First impressions matter.

They matter a lot. even though the experience totally changes when you're logged in and everything else. Yeah, it's just they basically said no, we're not going to change our front page. We're not going to curate content on just the front page.

No, it is. Unfortunately, Bit Shoots gain the reputation of being um, you know where all the rejects from Youtube went and well, yeah, it's no. so it's I think it's going to die in its own niche there. and it's only 480p which is useless for my videos Like screen captures like this one, you can't watch them in reasonable quality.

So no, I don't recommend Bid Shoot anymore, but my content is still there if you want to watch it. Got 2 000 followers? go for it, I don't judge. and then you've got dailymotion which I don't think anyone uses, but my all content gets auto copied over to dailymotion as well. Yeah, the user interface is just dumb.

I don't like it, but trust me I believe or if I click on all videos, I believe all my videos are there, they should be and every. yep, even my new one. Yeah, my latest one's all there. I've got a thing.
I got programs and systems to auto copy all this uh stuff. and um. lastly, um, I've probably forgotten one. there's probably some skewer one somewhere.

My own website. For the last 12 years I've had my videos on my own server. my own Rss server. You can remember, Rss was all the rage.

You can still get only in 720p though I do I down convert because it's on my own server at that one point. you know I don't want to pay an absolute fortune for streaming. uh, you know, full Hd content. Um, but every video I've ever made is over there and you can get it in my Rss feed, right? Probably right back to video one.

It's Video One, Eev, Blog one. There it is. It's all there. It's been on my server from day one, so if you want, I've got about two, two and a half thousand people who watch via the Rss server.

Brilliant. Anyway, I highly recommend Odyssey.com as the alternative platform of choice. Huge number of electronics, uh, content creators are uh, over there. As I said, Big Live Lewis Rossman, Electro Boom, and some of my favorite science channels are over there.

We're talking about what? The Math Veritasium, Three blue, one brown, Uh. minute Physics? Great Scots over there, Def Pom, a whole bunch of other electronics creators over there, and uh, it's a great experience over on Odyssey.com As I said, they're continually working on it and they accept feedback. And in fact, they're desperate for feedback on the Odyssey platform they were just talking about. uh, yesterday, talking about adding something like the Youtube community tab so you can do blog posts over there.

You can post images or you know, something like that. I suggested, you know, polls and like everything just basically duplicate the Youtube community tab uh, functions which I use occasionally. I post polls and you know, update photos and stuff like that. So anyway, Odyssey.com please, I'm gonna be putting more and more exclusive content.

The exclusive content will uh for now, go on all my alternative platforms, not just on Odyssey, but I think Odyssey is the best bet. You essentially can't be censored. uh, you can't, Your channel is just not going to vanish. And if you're a content creator, you can get monetized on here as well through uh, library credits.

Even just watching videos and participating, you also gain library credits. So anyway, I won't go into the whole crypto part of it. The Odyssey.com is designed to be the Youtube uh, alternative where you know you don't have to worry about the crypto side of things. you just go in there and use it.

Highly recommended. So there's tons of your already favorite content creators. There heaps of people commenting, a really good community over on Odyssey. So if you're sick and tired of all the ads, or you're sick and tired of the politics or the Youtubes or whatever you're sick and tired of, there's alternatives.
There's at least what five different alternatives. And as I said, I don't care who you are, where you come from, where you watch me, what platform, what politics you got, I don't give a toss, I'm just happy that you're watching and you know we can have quality comments and have a good community winner. Catch you next time. And yeah, if you do want to see some more beach, here you go.

It's now. uh, sand in the eye. sand in the eye. Eight.

It's now eight o'clock Sorry I don't have the uh steady thing on. but there you go. Fantastic! And yes, the east coast of Australia is just filled with. you know, this one's about five kilometers long.

Something like that. It's a little tiddler. Catch you next time.

Whats wrong with Odysee?? I decided to check it out today after Dave talking about it, i created an account logged in, watched a few videos then suddenly during a video it crapped out to this page saying There is a bug… somewhere… And a refresh button and it said to try refreshing or contact help. I tried refreshing, nothing, goes back to the same error message page. I closed the browser and reopened, same thing, tried another browser, same thing, rebooted the computer, same thing. Is Odysee just down because i have been trying for hours. I sent an email to their help address, maybe they can suggest what to do, but i am stumped if this is something on my end, because i tried two different computers and three different browsers, still the same error message all night.

Thanks for the amazing alternative! An alternative that actually gives you recommendations to sane people for once. Unfortunately, given their service model, I have this feeling down the line it'll be branded this that & the other n the whole user base will be called everything under the sun.

I don't really remember how bitchute works, but if I'm not mistaken, I created and account or something of the sort there, but never used it afterwards, the closest was odysee, and I would love to use it more, but it would be better to have higher resolution content, and if they were to get on the smart tv wagon, that would be great, I obviously can't speak for other people, but I don't watch youtube only on my computer/phone/tablet, I also watch on my TV, and if they were to enable higher resolution content that would be awesome, I would certainly choose them over the overlords at google.
Man, I miss the "don't be evil" times.

I also don't care who the provider is, so kudos. BUT! Every provider simply has to make money, if only to pay for their servers and bandwidth. If they say they don't take your money now (either the provider or the viewer), then either they're lying or they'll go bankrupt.
When YouTube started, by providing storage and display of videos at no fee, everyone wondered how they'd make money. Now we know. All of these alternatives are either making money on the side (somehow), or soon will. Or, of course, disappear.
So, by all means support alternative providers. BUT, at the back of your mind you have to ask the question: how are they making money?

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars supercritical says:

I just wanted to mention that I had some trouble syncing my YouTube account but it was only because I didn't have enough subscribers and Dave helped me get in contact with them because he's a bloody legend. thank you Dave for all your effort with everything over the years you're a real gem.

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars DragSlotinit says:

What is the best one to go to In your opinion, I'm curious? My issue with the ad's especially on tech sites like your's or even my little channel before I removed my content, is this: It distracts from what your talking about. Yes not in your control but Iv'e seen as many as 5 or more adds even on a video as short as 10 to 15 minutes. That's overkill in my opinion, and bad marketing not only for those advertisers but your channel. Sure you can use ad blockers but I feel you shouldn't have to use those programs just to watch a video. I'm more of a incorporate the products used in the video your making so, however marketers want the largest audience just an Observation here on Youtube.

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars PatriotinOnTour live says:

In Germany the Leftists on Youtube delete more and more Channels because of content if the statements do not match those of the WHO! But, the WHO themself does not match to the statements of the WHO! So, there ist no need for CensorTube anymore!

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Paul Coffey says:

What's with the return to the previous advertisement when you attempt to return to the previous video? @youtube it is very annoying. The increase in advertising on @youtube over the past 12 months has been awful. I came to @youtube from television because i was sick of the advertisements there. Looks like it's time to leave @youtube too.

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars LeviHB says:

Totally Dave, and it will also be the year of Linux on the desktop! We will finally have those fusion breakthroughs we have heard are coming for the past 70 years! Python 2 developers will drop it and move to Python 3!

Video content, distribution, streaming, etc is still not technically feasible on the type of budgets needed to do this. I think it will be within the next several years, but I very much doubt it will be this year.

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Prince Westerburg says:

LBRY – I have a feeling we are going to hear a loty more of this soon, especially give the current situation. Ooh, apparently I'm a nazi now as I use Telegram – how exciting! ๐Ÿ˜€

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Basement Science says:

The only problem is that as lbry grows, it will also have to deal with the same problems that youtube does now, such as copyright-madness, child protection laws, misinformation and so on. At least they dont necessarily have to deal with advertisers because they dont have any as of now.

LBRY is not the solution, but I think it's a good stepping stone. It can eventually develop into something that solves all the problems youtube can never solve, by being completely open-source and becoming more and more decentralized.

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Oaf Politics says:

Aye, I would suggest some sort of box which sits between your home Broadband box and home network (inc a firewall) which stores videos which you watch – for other people to use. It could have an appropriate torrent client/server, as well as maybe some sort of blockchain twitter/facebook alternative content.

If a company can get building them for a couple of hundred quid, with 1Tb of storage, I reckon they would fly off the shelves.

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Daveyk021 says:

No Odysee iPhone App. Odysee would be easier to view on a phone with an App. Most of the videos I watch, I watch on my phone. I do have a droid pad. Is there a droid app for Odysee?

Iโ€™m happy with YouTube Premium, but not happy with all the sensorship lately.

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars t0ny747 says:

What I really hate about youtube anymore is the recommendation system. Back in the old days I would find all kind of cool videos. Now 99% of my recommendations are large youtubers. You never see small channels anymore. Half my recommendations are videos I've watched this week. I don't know why Google does this bad of a job at it.

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars ZTK RC says:

You know how this game works, VC gives us free service to build up a userbase, then they monetize and with monetization comes restrictions. If there are no ads, then your restriction is reach because they will put up pay walls. If there are ads, then your restriction is which content the advertisers want shown to the user and which content is prioritized. It doesn't matter if the founders say they won't compromise the product at the outset, the VC will twist their arm. However, despite all of this, YouTube needs competition. This is good for everyone.

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Leroy Casterline says:

Just last week I was searching for an alternative to YouTube; lots of pointers to the usual tired suspects, but of the several lists I checked, Odysee appeared on exactly none. They've got a new member and you've got another follower on their site, and on one other as well (don't remember which – I think I was follower #105).

One thing that is hindering my use of Odysee is finding a list of keyboard shortcuts. I know the shortcuts exist (space for pause/resume & left/right arrows to skip work), but up/down arrow don't work for volume. Neither their help nor a Google search of the site were helpful. Once I get that bit figured out, I'll still have to remember to check the site routinely as I do with YouTube now.

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars A true meme master says:

I stopped using google services (Including YouTube) and planning to quit YouTube and use LBRY. Stop giving YouTube money and start using a ad blocker, do not let YouTube grow. This will force creators to go to another paid competitive service. Be careful when you mention bitchute or some of the other platforms, people are sometimes politically BRAINWASHED by "woke" corporations to think its a website strictly for "neo-nazis" or other stupid buzzwords. This is their way to stifle competition through cancel culture

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars I Object says:

There are no checks and balances.
What constitutes a view? Who can verify it?
It's all bullshit. They'll run ads on your demonetized videos.
That should tell you all you need to know.

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars I Object says:

If it's secret, how can you keep checks and balances?
My channel got banned by YouTube. I didn't even have a video published!
I made the comment; "If Trump wins, there will be Civil War V2.0 and America will burn to the ground"
Bam…. next day, I can't access YouTube with that account!
All the people I sub'd to, had to be found again. They erased me.
emailed them twice demanding to know the reason I was banned, and both times, got a link to their user agreement legal BS.
Nothing else! Just a link to their censorship document. FU YT.

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Richard Rootless says:

I think all those alt-tech should come together and create one decentralized network and frontend (website), because people don't have time to run around from one place to the other. Decentralized Unity is the way for all of us.
