I literally calibrate nearly all of my analog equipment with my 289. Worth every penny. I actually found a calibration defect in an

Aeroflex 3920 Radio Monitor with the 289.

He talks about the service manual in this video, where can that be found?

every video iv watched of you is awesome please keep making them

I think the meter is for Technicians out in the field, server rooms etc. I do know 1 who had one of these and another brand, both for seperate uses, in which he also used the both for voltage, resistance and ampere comparisons too . As for the price, I think it is rather insulting fluke continues to charge what they want…….

Very stupid comments, zero practical testing….mjlorton kick you ass in reviews….

Can you get the 289 to show frequency at the same time while showing AC voltage?

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Gregory Helton says:

Another "major" difference between the 189 and the 289 is this. The 189 has an AC+DC True RMS feature whereas this was dropped from the 289. The 289 has gone back to the AC only True RMS measurement. If you have ever needed the AC+DC RMS feature, you know just how important it is. This feature allows you to measure the true RMS value of complex waveforms with both AC and DC components. Most meters will just measure the average DC value on the DC settings, and true RMS on the AC settings. If you are a technician, most of the time you won't need the AC+DC RMS feature – if ever. As an engineer, when you need it, nothing else will do.

i bought one of these specifically for data logging. disappointed to find out after buying that it ONLY has AA battery power option, and smallest interval for logging is 1 second. no "high speed" logging here. and even at that setting you only get 2 1/2 hours of log time. that's really not all that great. yea its great to have all the accuracy of a fluke. but i hope they come out with something that is more modern in terms of data storage, computer performance (for faster logging) and a rechargeable lithium battery.

There are more then a few features the 289 has that the 87V does not besides logging. My two favorites are a miliohm scale that is accurate enough that I can estimate the length of a motor winding or romex in addition to other uses and the continuity feature triggers in the micro seconds time frame AND can be set to alarm on closed or open. Also you can set the rate of forced sampling but far more usefully you can set it to capture just changes and those changes can be set to record with as little as 1% change or can be set to only record 100% changes as well as anywhere in between. I actually use a fluke 117 as my quick, compact and dirty meter, but if I am only taking one meter into the field it is always the fluke 289. I had an 87V but I sold it as it covered between the 117 and 289 which is almost never ideal for the work I do. 117 quick and dirty, 289 find a tough problem.

is the 189 ll the same as the 289? if not, what is the difference?

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Murnel Babineaux says:

I have the 87V and the 289. Both excellent products from Fluke !!

Dave seems pretty unenthusiastic about the Fluke 289. It seems so cool but in practice it's more problematic. Shame about the start up time and battery life.

After five years of using the 289 in the field I can say that, for me, it presented no problems if I did decided to take  it job-side….But mostly I left it in the truck for fear it might grow legs.

(I work in hvac and I clean up after a lot of engineers  who want to go DIY on their equipment repairs and would think nothing of giving my 289 a new home)

Despite its size I am glad to have it in my tool inventory.  I store it aside from the main tool bag in its own bag to avoid an accidental smashing by some of the heavy wrenches I carry in the bag.

I have one, and the reading of resistance is too large, tens Ohms

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Lucky Luke says:

Hi Dave! Can you cross the TL910 leads, and tell us the reading of resistance?

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars natek327 says:

I just got them because of this video, they are awesome! You can get them on amazon for $60 the model number is TL910

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Seth Burgin says:

The Fluke probe pack is well over $100. Fluke meters are the best Cat3/Cat2 hand held meters. The caps that will explode when overloaded are usually in a carbon fiber shield case. For some inane reason the engineers at a mine had test points for the line side of a sub station in a control cab. Guys were always prodding that 12,470VAC with a 600 volt meter. The guys with Flukes melted their meters. They guys with cheap meters went to the hospital to have parts removed from their chest and face.

Hey Dave – love yr blog – esp the one about the Rigol 50MHz – I've got one! I'm looking at buying a fluke 289 and one of the things that you didnt mention about it that I think will be well worth while is the milliohm resistance scale, measuring coils, contacts, earth lines, FETs etc. it's just something a normal multi wont do

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Josef de Joanelli says:

"Porn for engineers", that was my favourite comment. Only our kind understand it lol
