Dave got a big santa sack delivery, what's inside?

Hi welcome to the Eev blog an Electronics Engineering Video blog of interest to anyone involved in electronics design. I'm your host Dave Jones Ho ho ho ho ho Merry Christmas Everyone Well I thought it was Christmas today at work. look what? I got. Check it out.

this huge Satchel God You got to be excited when you get something like this. I've never gotten this huge like Santa sack type satchel and guess who it's from? it's from the Swiss post office. There they are in all their glory. and check out the tag there it is Swiss post.

It's been security checked by the Swiss and well you know you know there's not going to be a bomb in here or drugs or anything like that. The Swiss Ad diligent. they've security checked this thing. You even get a lovely Swiss post uh, security, uh tie clip thing with it.

Fant Fantastic! So what's in the sack? Let's have a look. It's a bloody digy key catalog. You got to be me. Fail! What the hell is a Digi key catalog a Coming from Switzerland and be in a freaking Satchel like this.

And it wasn't just me. There were like half a dozen of these sitting in the foyer, each in there at work, each in their own individual. Swiss post sack I I Know it's probably not Digi Key's fault that it came in the sack, but why the hell is it coming from? Switzerland What an epic fail should be coming from Feif River Falls or wherever you are in the US This is just nuts. Is it printed in Switzerland I don't know.

Unbelievable. Let's take a look at it. Can we rip it open here? No, No. can't even rip the damn thing.

No. got to stab it. There we go. Now we're ping and bingo.

Look at that. the big new Digi Key catalog. Imagine all the trees that died to make that sucker. It's just enormous.

I don't know how many page 2,896 pages are you me now? I Love paper catalogs. but H really even? I've ditched the paper catalogs and I was hold out, especially with the Uh Fin L/ Element 14 W um catalog so you know, but dig ke? no. They've always had a great online search so I've always you know I've always used the Uh web I've never bothered with the catalog so well I don't know what do I do with this? a door stop if you got any ideas, let me know. But what an epic fail.

If this thing was a brown paper bag, I'd be tempted to fill it with something, set it a light and leave it on the front doorstep of a certain address in fief. River Falls Oh, look at me. I'm a Digi Key catalog. Woohoo!.

12 years later, but I can explain why this happened with this huge bag and it's not a fail. The thing is when you post books and printed papers you can get cheaper shipping rate. Don't know if it works everywhere but in many countries for sure. I stumbled on this when I posted some books to my sister and wanted special cheaper shipping rate which I knew about, and also wondered why it was called a bag on their website. I brought books in a box but at post office they put the box in a linen bag, tied it with a linen rope with a badge attached and put a tracking number sticker on that badge. Universal postal union has this M-bag mentioned in a postal transport guide: "Letter post covers items such as letters and postcards, which are typically not subject to systematic customs control. Letter post also includes small packets and M bags (direct bags of printed papers for the same address), both of which are subject to customs control." As of why it was shipped by Swiss post, at that time it was not that common, but currently it's very often that post of some other country is used for shipping between two other countries and never enters country of the particular post. So this catalog quite likely may never been in Switzerland.

Funny, just had the same thing happen with the Rio Grande tools catalogue.

I ordered 12" of heat shrink tubing and they shipped me the whole damn spool with just 12" on it. The box was huge!

Here in NZ and the fact my home is heated via a woodburner, i have found these kinds of massive -pages catalogs give up around 2 to 3hrs of good heat. You must however check the air setting to ensure there's just enough oxygen feeding the burn that results in full combustion to the point only a white dust is left and not a wodge of black 1/2 burned paper ash….

Try ordering a single micro from some of these companies, they put in in a foot long tray a then box it in a shoe box size package!
for the sake of the planet the industry has got to change!!!

They dropped the whole paper catalog a couple of months after you made this. I'd sure like to have one though!

I use those big catalogs as back stops to drill through thinner items.

Once upon a time I sent a package by post (the good old United States Post Office) to AUSTRALIAโ€ฆ. any one guess why it didn't have a timely arrival in AUSTRALIA?โ€ฆ

I finally tracked it down about the time my customer finally received it, by the way of AUSTRIAโ€ฆ. As Dave would say, "UNBELIEVABLE!!!"

Use the catalog pages for toilet paper. Folks used to use the Sears-Roebuck years ago in rural America.

Did the shipping adress say it came from switzerland? Maybe it DID come from the USA and was sent via Air Mail through Europe to Australia. And in Switzerland they decided to do a customs/security check. Weirder things have happened. Although why the post company wouldn't send it the other way across the pacific to asia/australia instead of the atlantic.. no idea, maybe they had a capacity available there.

I have phone directories (about the same thickness, maybe a little less) to raise my computer monitors off my desk so I don't have to look down on them, they're at about eye level now.ย  (Yeah, the desktop itself is a little on the low side, but I like it.)

most catalogues are so pointless. the fact you can't ctrl+f is enough for me to not want to use them, waste of time
