and the winner is...
Hi, it's Contest time again and up for grabs is this agilant. U 1732 B LCR meter. It's the uh, older, uh B series. Uh, it's the one I did the uh tear down of and it's an excellent bit of Kit So if you want to see inside it, check out the tear down video and I posted this on Twitter on the Forum uh on uh, the blog site and on as a comment on the YouTube channel as well.
So you can't complain. You didn't know about the contest. um and uh, it was for uh, you had to be a member of The Forum though to be in it. But anyway.
Um, here it is. We're going to give it away. Live here. uh What uh.
it's going to work the same as last time. going to use the Evev blog wobbulator program and I'm going to do this live in one continuous shot so no one complains. There's any funny business going on or something like that, so let's do it all right here. We go right.
What I'm going to do is first of all: I'm going to pick a random number and to do that, I'm going to use the RCR meter itself and the last digit on the LCR Meetup will be the random number and I'm going to pick a capacitor one of these red capacitors here from uh here and the last number on there will be the number of times I run the EV blog wobbulator program so if it's five, it'll be the fifth name drawn out now. I need a number greater than one here cuz I don't want to draw it once. Four, three, three. all right.
Now let let's take four. It popped up with four. First, let's run the program four times and uh, the fourth name pulled out of the Hat will be the winner unless I deem it. uh um.
Otherwise, so sorry if the White Balance or something like that is out here. I'm not going to dick around with, uh, trying to get that working. So what? We've got the Eev blog. Forum If you haven't checked it out, you got to be on the Eev blog.
Forum It's Eev Blog.com Forum There's hundreds and hundreds of posts per day. It's brilliant. And here's the thread down here. So we're going to go into the thread and we've got 242 replies.
So that's a lot of entries. So you got one chance in like 242 or 241 if you take out my post. what I'm going to do is print, um, the page and it generates a text file like this. There it is.
It's got everyone's name in there. I Love o Possums one. I'm sure that in 1985, an LCR meter is available at the every corner drugstore, but in 1955, it's a little hard to come by. Beautiful, well done o' Possum.
All right. So that generates all 242 uh names in the Hat and my program just extracts the name. It just reads each line each text line, line by line, and extracts the person's username. So I'm going to save the page as that's the previous contest.
Let's arase that and do you want to replace it? You bet you. Okay, we've got ourselves the text file and now what we're going to do here is we're going to run Uh contest and we're going to drag it over here into my contest program. 243 names found 242 names in the Hat There's one duplicate name. It did take out any uh, duplicates and things like that. So remember, we're going to run this four times. Okay, so the fourth name pulled out of the Hat sorry to the first three, but the fourth name pulled out will be the winner. So let's do it. and it's doing some random to calculate the winner and the winner is not BK o Chris sorry bko Chris Nice try, but your name could be called out again.
don't worry about that so that's one, two is colap sorry colap and three second last, the winner is not Wilfred sorry Wilfred But your name could be drawn out again because it's completely the random process restarts each time. So this will be the fourth time and this will be the winner. Are you ready? Here we go. Are we zoomed in? We are.
It's doing random. if I wait longer, it's not doing much more random. Here we go. The winner is Tada Dorus.
Congratulations Dorus! Woohoo! You've won the agilant! U 17 32 B LCR meter. It's a really nice bit of Kit So um I'll be in uh contact with you and I'll ship that out. So thank you very much uh to everyone who entered. Hope you enjoyed it.
Catch you next time.
What contest? not everybody is on the forum as we just like to watch and learn from your videos :o( Congrats to the winner though :o)
cool
I'm sorry to hear that you're in a lose-lose situation then.
I subscribe to your Youtube Channel, and unfortunately I didn't see the announcement. Since YouTube changed their home page, about 6 months ago, I (and I presume others) miss out on videos and announcements.
I originally subscribe to you via iTunes podcast. Do you still post videos to iTunes?
damn, i need to be a member of the EEBlog Forums :/
It would be anoying to be the third person:-)
Will definitely do, thanks Dave!
And then I get accused of pushing people to my forum etc, and/or posting a useless video just to get more views, or I didn't wait long enough to give them a chance to see the video or whetever. Seriously, I can't win no matter which way I go. I posted the contest announcement on my Youtube feed, so everyone who subscribes to my Youtube channel had a chance to see there was contest.
That can be true of forums, but I find the EEVblog forum is different (and try to run it as such), and MUCH friendlier than some of the youtube comments in general (not yours!, just saying in general). Seriously, check out the wealth of info on the EEVblog forum and I think you'll be massively surprised.
I don't think that it's unreasonable to post a video announcing the contest. After all, you'd get advertising money from posting the video, and more people would've signed up to your EEVBlog Forum.
Sadly, you've just created annoyed people, and not (probably) not many new forum users.
Lol so many dislikes? Just because you didnt see there was a contest? Grow up people, even better open your eyes… So you want personal mail or maybe a phone call from Dave when he starts a contest?
I skip through the intro. OK Dave, my bad. I'm there now. Thanks for the reply.
Wilfred : (
I wasn't trying to infer a lack of warning. I do appreciate your generosity in doing your giveaways.
I'm subscribed, but I find the text feed on YouTube to be convoluted. That's my own issue.
I haven't given in to the Twitter thing, but I'm thinking that it'd be easier than checking your comment section 🙂
You always wait for the meter reading to stabilise! 😉 poor 3! Not that I care at all (and wasn't entered) but the idea of showing live to eliminate any fixing as a big leap of the imagination. The meter leads were off screen for a start (555 video springs to mind! :p) and the generator was custom code so would be so trivial to fix (hold down ctrl key while clicking button to display fixed result?) I'm not in any way saying it was fixed just pointless to imply any method shown demonstrates that
The forum provides an easy way to gather, sort and select the entries.
The first time? The Forum URL is in BIG BOLD LETTERS in EVERY VIDEO in the outro!!
I didn't think a video mentioning it was really warranted. I announced on my Youtube feed, so anyone subscribed to my channel had the opportunity to see it. Also announced on Twitter, the main blog site, and the forum. That's 4 different locations.
I love your work and your voice, man !
That's the US. He means a Canadian skill test question like: what large North American nation consistently beats Australia in Math, Science and Reading test scores (according to PISA)?
For you Ozzies I'll give you a hint: it begins with C and ends with anada, :->
This contest was not fair to the people who didn't participate!
I don't Twitter!
I did not know about the contest. I watch all the videos, did not know I had to join the forum.
Maybe for the future there should be a very short contest indication video? I understand if you only want people that are active regularly to be a part of it, but I rarely look at those kinds of posts on the forum.
I have registred a month ago but I feel myself quite uncomfortable to begin activity among already well-formed community.
Will there be an Agilent 90000 series oscilloscope contest? Hahaha, they are hundreds of thousands of dollars!
Congratulations to the winner. Unfortunately, I didn't know about it.
I think the point is to encourage more forum activity, or reward the loyal forum participants.
(btw, I didn't know either 🙁
Oh man, saw the thread title on the forum but I figured it's just one of those US/Canada only contests on some website/online store and didn't access it… didn't bother clicking on it since I'm in Europe.
I'm so upset now…
Some work required to win would be nice! Like a challenge or a puzzle, etc
I think its because Dave is out of cal. I see no sticker on him.
First time I've heard you actually give the forum URL, Dave. It's a nice sunny Memorial Day holiday here in the states so next time we have torrential weather and I'm forced inside for a long period, I'll check it out. Our Aussie exchange student says Bonza Good Onya.
