What's inside the new FLIR TG165 Visual IR Thermometer / Thermal Camera using the new Lepton sensor?
How does it compare to the FLIR ONE & FLIR E4?
Does it have a calibration shutter?
Does it have any extra capability built in ready to be hacked?
How easy is it to open? (SPOILER - it's a BASTARD!)

No idea if the X version has any easier to change battery, kind of a shame cause the use case I have for one means that it's gonna get used a handful of times per year, maybe I should look for alkaline versions

  2. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Citizens Tech says:

The most vicious teardown I've ever came across on YouTube ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Randy Havard says:

Why would they make it serviceable? Everyone knows all 18650s last forever. They must have hired some apple engineers.

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Steven bell says:

Watching this to see how I could change the battery ๐Ÿ˜ญ

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Stone[TL] Production says:

Hi, I've just encountered the same problem but with UTi260B. It just the same! It's screwed from the inside and goes under the screen but you cannot open it. How in the world should I change the battery or service it? If it's broken you just throw it in the garbage? I don't understand.

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jakob says:

LOL great video.. ohh boy I can relate..and yeah that plastic layer on top of the back screen.. what a mess if you can't get to that and need to manhandle that rubbercoating..
but great video and you can bet 99% of your viewers can relate to such a situation.

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Citizens Tech says:

Its well made so tight bcoz its water resistant.

You are literally right next to the crystal… It's the SCTF 8000.

    Fuck !

I'm aware that this is late, but I do think Dave is a bit aggravated.
I guess the people who designed and engineered this unit are former employees at SAAB and VW, yes, VW is nothing more than overcomplicated expensive crap, while SAAB is just over-engineered I guess that's what happens when you try to mix cars and jet fighters.

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars moaminbj says:

    very good

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Arjunaidi Jamaludin says:

Just as difficult to open an HP calculator with heatstakes

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars dooronron69 says:

I was thinking of buying one of these from flir and that's why I watched the video, now I know it's not serviceable I won't be buying one, I want to be able to replace my own battery when it dies not replace the whole system order pay flir an extortionate amount to do it,
    Good video

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Doogs M says:

Just found this episode…..this was brutal! A 2 minute teardown turned into a horror movie. This is why we hide the tools when the engineers show up. You never, NEVER get an engineer to do a Techies job!

Now I'm off to unscrunch my forehead from all the cringing I was doing.

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars peter last says:

It appears that the life span is only as good as the battery.

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Valkyrie3 says:

Getting the battery is next to impossible! Does anyone know how far the unit will allow you to make out a man sized figure in darkness?

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars lock eye says:

id cut across the case below the front screen undo the 2x screws to change the battery

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Allan Ragnarsson says:

Why the FUCK open it ?

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars nick howe says:

I just purchased a e40 unit from ebay 2013 model does picture in picture called flir an asked if I could get it to do the msx through a firmware update since it has both lenses. they side no but after getting bounced around to five different people to try an get an answer, was wondering if you knew if the MSX has specific circuitry or if it's in firmware/software? – ps I watch you're videos hoping some of the knowledge will sick but don't know what you're talking about alot of the time – sincerely dumb Yankee HVAC/R technician

I would love a way to get the video out of this as VGA, DVI, or HDMI so I can capture it for youtube streams so people can see the thermal troubleshooting methods. I can't find any thermal cameras of quality that can output to an external monitor.

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars unicuk says:

Hi Dave, I am a boiler repair man, I would like a good thermal imaging camera, which one you recommend? thank you!

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Asali Saterfield says:

Good ol' hot air gun would have loosened up the moulding to service it. But, really, before tossing it, dremel the battery out then black duct tape! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars codemiesterbeats says:

I would take a razor blade and cut away at the rubber… but shit If it wore out I would break the shit and then tape it up when I got done lol!!!!
