Dave takes you step-by-step through his video editing, rendering, and transcoding process for an EEVblog video using Sony Vegas / MovieStudio & Handbrake x264.
Note this is NOT a tutorial, it's a mostly live walkthrough of editing an actual EEVblog video, so lots of waffle.

odd, audio is out of sync with the video… seems youtube has broken something.

Just watched this- best I can tell you use the software to cut together the video fine- but I'll never understand why you encode twice-
I'd export to the original(mpeg2?) format & then use handbrake to encode straight to x264 with your intermediate encode settings as well–
that's of course you think the 264 encode is quicker because of the "render" first could well be. *Just being an armchair expert*
Enjoy the vids please keep it up!

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Smith says:

what software are you using for screen capture?

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Matt Polton says:

wow I seem to love vegas movie studio it was the fast program I try at exporting it export a 10 minutn video in like 6 minutes for me

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Giu says:

I've 2 questions: How long does it take to do have one video done (with all the editing stuff) and…. I always wondered why you don't include a little soundtrack to your videos. Could be more fun and they would make just the right mood! Would be nice to have a soft fancy music in the background…

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Giu says:

@ Zweihander Das Problem ist ja garnicht ob er Video editieren, und wie gut, er es machen kann, sondern dass er sein Fach (Elektronik allgemein) sehr gut versteht. Videos kommen an zweiter stelle. Ja, mit solchen Kameras, und Software, wuerde man bestimmt besseres draus machen, aber egal.

This was outstanding, thanks. I got a lot of useful information from this video.

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dave Satay says:

The Wix ad at the beginning of your video is WAY too loud, the audio level is too high. I will definitely NOT use Wix, and will tell all my friends to avoid them. It is very disturbing.

Thank you so much for showing just how much goes into editing a video! It's funny how much you need to edit and how little people know about it.

I think you should really check out VEGAS PRO 14 Suite. It can do a lot new tricks. If you need or want them. They have a great upgrade offer for Movie Studio Users like us. Or in February they'll release Vegas Movie Studio 14. I am not sure. But considering all the good stuff you'll get with the suite I think I'll spend the 349€ for Vegas PRO, even if I don't need some of the stuff. (Oh btw: Doesn't ask you about GPU accerleration anymore). And you got a lot of new codecs.

Sony Vegas and Movie Studio is a little goofy with GPU Acceleration. It is really dependent on the GPU you use (AMD usually is a bit faster then Nvidia with Sony editing software) and the type of file you are trying to render to. It took my a while to get the settings just right to make a considerable difference. But with my experience having 2 GPUS for hardware acceleration is not faster then a single GPU for acceleration, at least with Sony Vegas/Movie studio.

Not that I'd do videos myself, but thanks anyways for sharing your experience and tips in this informative video!

your audio levels look spot on, but when i pop up my pc volume slider, I'm peaking at about 40-50% tops, what the hell is youtube doing! who is stealing your audio db, is this googles secret power supply for data centres, audio energy!

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Lawton Willingham says:

As mentioned by others, your comments about normalization, suggest to me that you would really like to use compression. EQ and compression would just be "gilding the lily" in your case though. Try out the default settings if you're interested or a "voice enhance" preset. From wiki "Audio normalization is the application of a constant amount of gain". Also from wiki "Dynamic range compression or simply compression is a signal processing operation that reduces the volume of loud sounds or amplifies quiet sounds by narrowing or compressing an audio signal's dynamic range. "

I do wish you'd take a minute to tweak your audio, this video itself was way down in level. Sometimes I watch your videos whilst traveling on a noisy bus, other content producers have leveled/compressed their audio somewhat and its easier to hear them with a high noise floor like that. Vegas has a built in compressor that isn't superb but does the job. Thanks for all the great videos! I do audio production, am familiar with vegas and would be happy to offer a quick 'n dirty procesing chain if you'd like.

I love how you left the Hello World text in your video #942. I didn't get it in the actual video.

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Pats Junk Drawer says:

I use a free(full featured) video editor called Shotcut that looks very similar to your editor.

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Spirit says:

Here's an arrow vegas/movie studio can use:

I use it as a preset for text generators.

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars compactc9 says:

I think I have learned something here, usually I'd think making a bunch of short clips would make my editing work harder, but I think I might start recording that way, it looks like it makes things a bit simpler.

  20. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars compactc9 says:

You're right about not needing high speed drives for video editing, I actually don't use my internal drive at all during the process, other than as a temporary stop between my iPhone (I don't use a special camera, just the one in my phone, I have it record at 1080p 60fps) and the external USB 3 drive that holds all the video files. I also export the final video to this derive as well. I know it works well, because I can export a 30 min. video in around 10 minutes or less, an hour long one will take about 20.

  21. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Operator says:

Hey Dave, just found your channel. (I'm building a Neve 1073 clone preamp currently and your tutorials are really helping) Just wanted to say that I'm learning loads mate! You really know your stuff 🙂 Thanks for all the great vids! Cheers.

  22. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dexter says:

Yup the resampling as I have seen it with my own eyes, does make a "serrated" effect on moving vehicles. It's terrible that Magix the developers of this good software, don't seem to come to any commonsense to allow us have our own default preferences in the software, well, not all

  23. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars LastofAvari says:

I use Movie Studio 13 Platinum too. It's good enough even with a few down sides. And it's especially good value for the price. I'd got the pack on Steam sale for 25$, don't think any other product can beat it with more or the same feature set. 🙂
Yes, Premiere is better. But it costs hundreds of dollars, so that's completely unreasonable, since Movie Studio is not that different from Vegas as it was said already here.

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dawda Colley says:

    This is cool

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Matt Stumblovski says:

Have a look at Davinci Resolve, Vegas is old hat now.

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars failureisfunny says:

Thank you Dave, this video is very interesting!
