An unboxing anf first impression of the OWON 14bit XDS3202A Oscilloscope.
Note, this was shot as single take for the 2nd channel, but thought it might be better off here but with no EEVblog number. It is NOT a review. If you don't like unboxings and just bumbling around with the scope the first time and ranting then please don't watch it.

Hi just a little unboxing video of a new oh One scope here or new Isham Sure when it actually came out XE XD S 3202 A there it is there. Not to be confused with the XPS 3202 with LP A which is a completely different scope and why companies do this I don't know. It's bloody annoying. This is a 14 bit scope, 200 mega analog bandwidth, 14 bit convertor in it.
which is why I'm quite excited to have a look at it. One gig, sample the second and not very fast because it's got that 14 bit converter and it's thirteen Hundred and Sixty-five US dollars. The one without the A is an 8 bit converter. It's a hundred megahertz and it's like 800 and something bucks.
So really very are confusing. So let's open it up and it's one of these you know five in one things. as everyone's doing these days. it's got like a data logger and all sorts of crap in there and yet anyone.
god, they can't even number it what they do. What? They don't even know how many things are in there. One two, three, four late. Anyway, it's got optional battery power I Have done a video on an older one, the SDS 9302 that was a couple of years ago so I have to link that one in down below it.
One also has the optional battery wife I'm not sure if it's building or whether or not you just plug. Its got like dongle support and photo is only for reference. Lilliput is the actual manufacturer that's oh one basically touch screen hey twelve bit I'm sure it said fourteen Bit on this website. Hang on, let me go over.
Look that is a complete file. The website definitely says fourteen bit converter. This one only says twelve Might want want want anyway. 40 mega memory, 75,000 waveform updates per second.
Very nice. If you remember the old one I did previously, it's got quite a few it had. you know, a few issues and stuff like that. other one is probably I.
Guess there might be some old one fan boys out there. Sorry, but they're probably the name-brand in quote marks with probably the least reputation. Ro1 in terms of making scopes anyway. so they just haven't built up the same rep as other manufacturers.
Doesn't mean this stuff can't be good. So Oscilloscope signal Jen Multimeter a side mow meter. What's a silo meter? What on earth is a sigh Mo meter Any way to end a lager. Which is interesting because we 14 could really do some kickass data logging with this thing.
Anyway, yeah, it's got multimeter crap on the back. Without further ado, Let's not look at the box in the box is wrong so right out. Right off the bat. Complete and utter fail.
So we've got our accessory pack here. Let's have a look. We've got our manual. XDS Yeah, the 3000 series has a whole bunch of different models it's got and a couple of 8-bit models.
It's got one or two 12 bit models in this 14 bit model, so absolutely crazy. Um, the probes kind of look. oh I don't know. Anyway, they're rated R Oh W 3200 so they're 200 megahertz.
Usual par for the course. Met whatever. Oh yeah, they could be silicon robust, not sure. And we've got the genuine Ossie plug like the Ripper and oh, look, capacitance are there. Yeah, it's a little capacitance adapter for the multimeter. Yeah, smell it. It's a nice small form-factor Ah, exactly like the previous model. We looked at the SDS 9300 really thin I phone stuff.
that's the back of it. Look at the weird concave on the back of that. Think of that. it's like there's nothing in there.
but I Don't mind it as long as of course because of the limited depth. until photo Fairway does it or its bought. Yeah, look I Can I Not that button. I'm going to tip this over and that button has not pushed yet.
Wow fail. So yeah. I like they've got actually quite a positive dtente on them. You I fail Thank you very much.
200 megahertz? Yes, 14 bit. For those playing look at home, it's got 12 in on the box. Unbelievable. Arbitrary waveform generator 25 megahertz, 125 mix sample per second.
Oh, that's for the arbitrary waveform. Generally like that, then not many manufacturers actually put the the specs of the Arjun on the front. That's interesting I Think this is the only one anyway. only one geek sample second, but more than enough for your 200 megahertz bandwidth.
And given that it's of course 40 bit converter, you're not going to complain. Rubber on the front, rubber on the bottom so it's through in the business. A carry handle on the top Man built in land are building VGA which is very nice. Trigger out pass/fail so it should be able to get like the waveform updates per second.
Why do we have an RCA There's an RCA connector on there. What the? Anyway, that's our CDN and then our multimeter employed but doesn't interview the cat. Radian Such a fail from multimeter. this is Wi-Fi Decoding it's got can I Squid see us a little Rs-232 SPI All the good stuff.
Maximum power 15 watts. so that's why. hey, where's where's the battery? Ah I think the battery does the battery. Three suspicious screws up there with a different looking plastic.
not Yep. Yep, Yep, alright there you go. Yep so that's the children. Bail and the battery goes in there.
It doesn't come with one of course optional but that's very nice and only takes 15 watts. As I said which is are not a lot for a scope like this. Square screen. it hasn't got a long elongated job so let's kill that off.
Slice of a Big Touches touch screen so let's have a look. These are all push of all. I Don't like the look of the knobs I'm not sure what detent site. this depends on the vertical scale.
no detail, something position, but that's okay. The multi-purpose note and the horizontal year has some and sort of mushy feeling detents on that. so not terrific. Okay, maybe it looks a bit better than there than the one I did a couple of years ago the XDS 9300 series, but that it still looks pretty amateur hour. Yeah, I Don't know who's doing the user interface on these things, but not really impressed anyway. Grouping Layout: You've got your horizontal here with your external trigger. see that's a fail. You want your trigger controls lined up with your trigger B and C here.
buttons down the side and the bottom, which means twice the complexity probably Usb on the front are your serial decode in print default. Okay, and so with these off, why? one of the good things is got ourselves times 10 Probe adjust here, so that's very nice. Excellent. A lot of lowest-cost scopes don't include that, so that's that's a bit of a win.
And yeah, anyway, vertical control trigger controls should be lined up with your trigger. Look at this. It's even got like I Was going to say like yeah nicely. like external trigger.
It's almost if the external trig flows into these controls because that's how they've drawn it. But it doesn't They're the horizontal controls. That's ridiculous. What are unbelievable amateur Hour in terms of user interface and just the functionality? The graphic? whoever.
like they haven't had a professional graphic artist or you know, industrial designer do this thing. It's just now. it looks I don't know what it look like with some childish I don't know. transformer movie thing or something I don't know.
Anyway I want to get all the usual functions you've got to quiet, curse or display utility Auto said all that scale but no nose, no color. There's no flair in the colors at all. You get it. You can push the button so you've got to push them quick and sharp for it not to fall over if people say I'm being too harsh.
err. anyway, what is that? that? like an infrared window or something? or and no, that's probably a lead. It's probably a lead that's a lights up. Unlabeled is our sin Jen Completely unli Why? Like that's just like an afterthought.
and DMM sort of squeezed in here? No, no, no, no, that's got it. Come on. hands up. If anyone who thinks that's probably the worst is a look and feel scoped I Don't know.
Anyway, it's pretty awful, but of course it does line up with the connectors at the back so you know there's your output connectors here. But yeah, it's universal power so she'll be right right? No worries, there's nothing to indicate those plugged in at all. So what? that flashed red but it didn't switch on? Do I have to hold it down? Look, we miss. I Press the button a couple of LEDs light up and I'm going to hold it down.
Obviously, you've got to hold it down for at least a couple of seconds to turn it on. Wow Wow That's a fail. Really? All right, let's have a squeeze at this scene. now.
once again, this is just an unedited unboxing. so please forgive me. How long is this taking? Anyone counting? Yes, I'm still going. Ah, anyway.
I believe it's an 800 by 600 screen and with a 14 bit convertor 10 millivolts per division. bandwidth limit. Oh ok, it doesn't have them vertical. It's got them horizontal down here. Didn't expect that. so that's our. it's a probe. There's our motif.
Oh yeah. I Want to prefer to a detent on that? Ah, look look I can't like select that. It's ridiculous I can't just go push and it selects it and gets rid of the menu. That's crazy.
You can sit here and probably wait for a timeout. If there is a programmable timeout, you just got to get rid of it like that's just nuts. Look at it. sort of jumping around the shop.
they're not sure what's doing there. Yeah, of course that brings it back to the centre or good. I Thought it. no, it doesn't have 500.
It's only got 1 millivolt 1.00 There's no need to say 1.0 unless you actually go in and fine adjust that which you can't fail. What is that button? What is that push of a button on the scale vertical scale even do. If it doesn't bring up the fine adjust, it does nothing. They haven't implemented it.
What the and what are these little crosses here? Look, why have we got little crosses on the screen like that? Oh Anyway, oh there it is. There's our touchscreen and to slow as a wet weekend you saw it like a like look it. whoa. Give me a break.
Seriously. So tell me which one is actually selected I Yeah, it does technically, but you know what it's like. it's not a spit-and-polish like like a new road and Schwarz scope which has all the nice color surrounding the knobs. If you would expect that may get too low in scope right? So you know details details but that is just so laggy that is ridiculous.
That is what what the hell is going on there. What is what now? Choir Perf Performance Mode: 12 8-bit 12-bit 14 bit There we go. We didn't even have our 40 bit mode on. so there we go: about 14 bit interpolation sine X on X No worries, we've got our memory which should go up to 40.
Meg and once again, what? you can't You can't select that. That is so frustrating I Hate to use this thing every day. say it's reasonably responsive. but yeah, anyway.
stupid touch can we? Yep, yeah, we can change the time base. they're going like that. No, it looks like we can move and we can expand. but that's exactly what you want.
That's great. No worries, we're going all the way with LBJ 5 nanoseconds. Woohoo! Not going to get many samples I Like well well, the fact that uses a full screen only got half a division here. half a division there? No.
I hate that I hate that I'd rather have nothing at all I Think you know Bugs me. No, we can't even get fine time base either. No, nothing's happened. okay.
tells the self sample rate down there so we want to know if we're going to have with their channels. Nope. Where's our one gig sample? a second must be 14 bit mode. Doing that must be it doesn't say that on the box. see if it changes. Yep. 500 mega samples per second? yep and it's half the up. No, it doesn't have there you go.
So it's 500 samples per second only. but it's a twelve if it's true. Twelve bit converter doing that. Hey, no worries, that's brilliant, right? It's the only reason you'd buy this thing.
If you wanted the high resolution mode, you would not buy this. Did not spend your thirteen hundred bucks or whatever to get a two-channel two hundred Meg scope at one gig samples per second with 40 mega memory. You just wouldn't do it. The only reason you'd buy is for the high resolution converter.
Like offhand: I can't remember the other. The competition for the high resolution converter. There's not many of them on the market. There may not be anything at this price point.
I Stand to be corrected I Have not done my research at all before opening this box. All input impedance: 50 Ohms nice. Ah, and it's our touchscreen as well. Sorry, yes, so that's alright.
Full band? Look hello, look okay, Ah right. Okay, because we're in 12 bit mode I bet you're can't do that then why haven't Why have those options show up if you can't have those things at all? So changes though. does a lot of really clicking in there? Let me tell you. Input Limit Full Band What I mean Standard 8-bit mode One The example of a second on both channels which is great I Can't be sane I Can't disabled to get my full bandwidth limit.
How do I get my 200 megahertz? That is insane. Channel 1 Right Bandwidth Full Bandwidth 20 Meg's full bands That one works. Channel 2 Full band does nowhere. is that a bug? It's got to be a bug anyway.
I'm impressed that it's got 50 ohm input impedance. For the price you, we don't get that so that's pretty good. We got our usual coupling and do our ACDC and ground. It's a long way to the top.
If you want to review Scopes, let me tell you, those Acadec A fans will get that. Tell you what? Not happy Jen at the current state of affairs with this thing. Okay, it's got some useful triggering edge timeout. Windows Run Tyler Video: Okay, no worries.
Alright I won't try Auto Set Don't care. Display dots of course. All right. we got really got that many dots.
Really? don't need dots I stopped that. That's not dot dot mode doesn't even work. That's like let's victim mode. There's no difference between that and look what? Just like a bloody sample of something and half the features don't work.
Okay, we've got color coded whiz-bang seeing them above. Some people like that. Fullscreen XY Mode: Okay, you can get both the waveform and there and some status stuff here. Whatever.
it's kind of neat. I Guess what else? We got an output one sign, one kilohertz, one volt, peak-to-peak zero millivolts offset. You would think pressing that button would automatically call up the menu for you, wouldn't you? But no, like, if you compare this with, say, the keysight one with their gorgeous velocity control on there that uploads that updates the multiple decimal points, we're going to go over and select the decimal point. Really old-school stuff. Doesn't may not have a keyboard whereas supports a keyboard external keyboard I Don't know Start Phase amplitude Why does it need three decimal places on that? I Got no idea and where's their waveform time? Here it is. look at the bottom Dave though so it is square ramp pulse And Oh what do we got inside? ARB New browse built in? There we go. Comment: Ok, it's kind of looks like it's going to have a bunch of them. Yep, okay.
very nice. Ok, cool. It's got some building stuff. It looks like it's nice.
Fast update. in 100 milliseconds, it automatically goes into role mode: I Don't mind that at all. I did your multimeter? That's a light on there I Kid you not, that's a white LED Oh my goodness, that is awful. Who chose that? Ah, Anyway, we've got ourselves a multimeter and it's just read in the back.
Of course it's not reading the waveform configure. Relative show info: Full range LT Range alternate range you know that is makes your probes go incorrect Terminal: Yep, no worries. Wish I didn't care. this is Wow overload.
Okay, well, yeah, we're not going to test this multimeter functionality, but that's yeah. Why bother like I Don't get it like they're just crying at trying to cram their five in one bloody instruments or whatever. It's just just hopeless. There we go.
That's a bit better. Trigger Trigger position: Yeah, it doesn't look nearly as good. but yeah, there it is. we're not getting.
okay. where's our display? It's triggering. Okay on that. A lot of scopes have trouble triggering that.
There's often a sweet spot where you can get that. But anyway, we're in standard 8-bit mode - twelve bit? well. I Love that. Rocksteady Trigger Wow fourteen bit.
Now, look at that. look at that. now. where's now Intensity control.
That's one thing missing on here. do we? Does it not have any? It does not have an intensity control. Now it has the you Color mode. Okay, what? Why don't you sort to flush up that on So it should be like any higher intensity color grading in there.
Wow, it's not. wow, That's that's persistence. Let's go. Can we turn that off? please? is hopeless so that color mode on color mode doesn't even work properly.
We saw odd. look. look what Doc modes doing. Okay, oh that's hilarious.
Okay, um. what? Like this is crazy. What's the hmm? don't breathe. it's a heartbeat thing.
um. anyway I'm pressed by the rock steady triggering on that waveform. That's pretty good. You wouldn't a lot of scope, so problem with that.
As I said, don't know why it's pulsating. Oh, it's got a hardware counter. There we go. Hardware counters going berserk. Doesn't know what to do? That's alright. And but where's our intensity control display? Am I Missing a control? Am I Missing anything? Anyone are people screaming at me? Go Dave It's right there. It's right in front of your nose, but it's not. It is not there.
So I like you to be in the display if any. Where's the intensity control? What? what? Acquire measure utility configuration, configure display. Don't tell me it's in there somewhere. Pop is sort of for pop-up read and display backlight graticule.
Okay, so we can change the night. We can just change our graticule type. Okay, that's you know. A lot of people like like the dot.
Other people don't like having anything so change it to that. but are there. There's the menu time. Twenty seconds so we'll set it to five.
Can't select it. Dumbest thing ever. It really is done without getting out the manual. I don't know where the display intensity is.
sorry. Any scope on the market that doesn't have a dedicated intensity no front every day you scope but supposedly had I believe it did well. It's got the color coding. It's got the color coding which a lot most scopes don't have it.
That was like a Tektronix exclusive thing, but that doesn't seem to be working properly. so I'm not sure what the deal is there. You saw it just turn a flash green there a little bit right? What? I Don't even think they know what they're doing with that function so much. This is the programmers you know Somebody said I put in color persistence mode like and they go.
What's that? Oh I don't know. make it change color. do you like what? And of course dot Moe didn't work. Which one says doing something there? This is nuts I I Don't know what's going on with this scope.
This is why why nobody's talking about oh one scopes right? Because like you use this thing out of the box and you just it. It's not a pleasurable experience at all. It's just like stuff missing not working. I mean how can they not be? How can it not have an intensity greater display? It probably doesn't is the answer, but you'd at least having it like even if they're not intensity greater display, you would still have an intensity control.
One of the thing. Five minutes left I'm going to run out of battery from my single tag video decode Rs-232 spy Configure because we've only got the two channels. you want to be able to configure the external light up sorry as the menu okay s clock Positive Negative: Okay, where do you set up your channels? Where do you set up your channels? It's like you can't now I wish I didn't change the display turnoff event table Okay, it's got an event table. Wonderful.
But where is how do you set which channel is used for clock and time out? Okay, so it looks like it's got a timeout so you can get away with the chip select with the timeout thing. Okay, yeah, anyway. I don't know if you can use the third channel like you know, my So Mozzie and the third channel. That's just that's crazy I that's so limiting I Squid see like I Can't even select the I Scott like oh no display I Can't even configure the I squared see there is no configure option Wow Unbelievable. I Haven't even looked at the data logger. where is like the data logging stuff and like they claim, data logging is that just roll mode? Is it like saving to USB I Like it requires a full review and a day of sitting down with the damn thing and figuring out how stuff works. But anyway, that is an unboxing and first impressions and play around in a single take. So forgive me.
Could do the business if you need a 40 MB converter. But as I said, you don't need the high bit converter you like I Don't know why you would buy your while you smoke. Certainly wouldn't spend 1,300 bucks on the on a scope if you didn't need the high-resolution converter. so that's really all you care about on the scope.
But if you've got a scope like this, you'd want to use it every day and you'd want features like intensity, greater display and your intensity knob and it's just not there. And you got Weinke features like the multimeter. but it does have a lot. I Mean you know you get a lot for your money.
I mean a 14 bit converter. What it was was 100 Meg samples per second I think it said at the maximum I think it with the 14 bit converter there. So you do get a lot of bang per buck and battery-powered as well. That'd be quite nice.
Of course if you're doing data logging, you want more than two channels of course. I Don't know what the RCA our put is. That's hilarious. Haven't seen an RCA output on a scope for 20 years anyway.
VGA Outland standard and all the rest of it and it's probably got that Wi-Fi functionality in there I Don't know how you'd set that up, but I like just well know am I missing like I Don't know what? they're sure. it's just got no spit-and-polish at all and stuff just doesn't seem to work. So that is where that is. Bizarre how to implement sampling setup.
This is great. how to implement sampling setup. Oh there you go. look at that.
Oh Wonderful text, no graphics. Anyway, that is the O one. XDS 3202 I hmm. I'll do a teardown video, but leaves a lot to be desired, doesn't it? Anyway, let me know what you think.
comments down below Catch you next time you.
The owon tao3104a seems to be this same build, 4 channel, but in a tablet form; and for half the price. It would be awesome to see you get your hands on that one. 14bit just the same. 100Mhz, 45M memory depth, 1GSa/s, etc. etc. There is only one English video about it on youtube.
I have a SDS1102, and althought it has an FFT mode, it's kind of useless because the info legend box blocks most of the useful bits of the graph!
UI Failed ๐๐
Seems like the only thought in the UI was the flash screen. Almost bought one until I came here.
Picked one up brand new with all decoding options, waveform gen, multimeter. ยฃ300 3 years ago. Still going strong. No complaints. Thanks for crashing the price!
useless huh
Do I detect a bias against OWON scopes??? I think OWON deserves some credit here! They market a scope and quickly send it to Dave to tell them all the problems and how to fix it!!!
please based on your knowledge which one should i buy the hantek DSO4102C or the rigol DS1102Z
Awww – poor Dave. He actually needed to read the manual before he could understand how to properly operate. Very irritating narration – like listening to Gilbert Gottfried.
ground on the probes connected together or separate independent?

Awesome experience
Are there any unbiased opionions about OWON devices?
I don't understand why there are always some people complaining about OWON devices or other bargain Oscilloscopes? I think OWON is doing a good job in providing well designed equipment at a good and fair price point. Am I so wrong?
Comparing OWON devices to much higher priced Models from "premium" Brands is not fair, IMHO!
I had the opportunitiy to test Keysight DSOX1204G and it was great (Price is about 1200โฌ) and also the R&S RTB2004 (Price over 5kโฌ!!!) and it was even better. But can I afford it at retail price? NO! Is it worth the money for a private person like me? Not really, except having so much money to spend for big boys toys like an oscilloscope. ๐
(BTW I`m working on it, maybe in some years the DREAM of an RTB2004 will come true!)
Looking at e.g. OWON Oscilloscopes you get 4 Channel with 14Bit (Owon XDS3104AE) for approx. 714โฌ!!! Thats amazing and I think the build quality and also the capabilities of this oscilloscope is really great for this price point!
Thank's for reviewing this OWON Oscilloscope.
THAT 40 MB IS A JOKE……… 40mb of delay :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
Look and feel ….BLAAAAAH!
I wouldn't buy that even if it had a 24bit or higher ADC. Its f**king useless. The UI is completely unusable.
Turn off the high pitch wine and learn to read.
The grotesque chatter of the funny guy. Embarrassing performance.
I was expecting a careful analysis of the device, and heard the grotesque chatter of a funny man. It just looks like the crap of a boring cabaret.
The isolation of it being self contained battery powered is very usefull in industial control troubleshootong. I wish the Siglent / Rigol's had that option…
You can always tell within 30 secs that Dave doesnt like something….LOL
It's so funny how clunky Dave is while trying to use a touch screen and a device without reading directions. I would say this is a 50-50 on this review. 50% Dave's old school clunkiness and 50% the scopes firmware. As for the humor scale, I give 100% to Dave. LMAO. great video.
These are about the only online scope reviews from an engineer who really knows how to work one.
Insult my wife or religion but not my scope. Wait, this one is a piece of rubbish.
Do yourselves a favor and read lots of forums! People that know their stuff and are not "so influenced" by the commercial side are our real friend! Some of the Owon stuff has been proven to be very good at some things! (never hear that on this channel)
Anyone else noticed that most of the issues he finds (with this brand in particular) is because he has done something silly or overlooked the settings he has previously changed? For example he cannot turn off the 20M bandwidth limit because he has his V/div too low and then blames the scope
This is good to by for $150 that is it. It is a crap otherwise. Good review.
Owon is garbage brand! What ever they say is fake! 1g sample rate is just in real 5M!!
Hi, Great videos by the way. Its been a while i have not used an Oscilloscope. I am considering buying this scope,
OWON XDS3104E Digital Oscilloscope. Is 100 Mhz sufficient for most applications or should i consider 200 Mhz?
If Dave ended up going to hell, rather than burn he would be forced to use this scope for eternity.
