Hi. We have an update on the Banksy artwork shredding that I did a video on back here which I'll link in if you haven't seen it. If you don't know, our Banksy is an infamous UK Street artist massively popular now and Sotheby's sold one of his hard works. it's a stencil type artwork.
go with balloon for over a million pounds in the UK and then let's have a look at seeds to shred itself. That's off. Absolutely very afraid. Love it.
Now there's a lot of speculation about this that the artwork wasn't actually shredded, it was secretly rolled up inside and there was a second copy and I said that was extremely unlikely I don't think that's the case as we'll see it was actually shredded and the other thing was was that people were saying art with it had been lying dormant for like a decade or more or something like that and well, that's technically possible. I said no, that was BS It's a fairly recent thing and Banksy in his own video. He has said a few years ago he secretly built a shredder into the painting and well, I'm not necessarily convinced it was a few years ago. If we have a look at the Banksy video here, the original one of course has gone through all this in the previous video.
Basically, he put this fake shredder mechanism in here. There's this, did not do the shredding. I speculated that it was, it had to be and deduced that it had to be a real shredding like a proper rolling type shredding mechanism in the this base plate. here.
and as it turns out, Banksy has just released a statement and a new video on Instagram. Some people think it didn't really shred it did. some people think the auction house were in on it. they weren't and I said that day.
Yeah, almost certainly Sotheby's weren't in on it because their reputation is too big and Banksy actually confirms this has done a new video shredding the girl and balloon I guess is that it's official name now girl and balloon I'm Sotheby's called it girl with balloons. So anyway, the Directors half Cup and we'll take a look at this step by step because he shows more detail on how he actually did this. Now of course, the original auction. Here it was authenticated.
Here it is. the artwork was actually authenticated by a company called Pest Control. And Pest Control is actually banks, his own company that verifies and authenticates his artwork. So Sotheby's actually must have sent it to him for authentication.
And that's we don't know whether or not that's when he installed it or whether it was a couple of years back when maybe it was originally sold or handled or maybe authenticated or something like that. But yeah, that was the opportunity to install the mechanism, especially it was must have been integrated into the original when it was done with the original large frame. So we're not sure what the deal was there. But yes, Sotheby's weren't in on it according to Banksy So let's go through and have a look at Shredding The Love I Love it.
The Director's cut. Now this is interesting. Here's the actual shredder mechanism and I knew it had to be something like this. Here is the front of the painting up here. This is where the artwork. A guy goes into these little guides here like this and then comes over an old roller because you've got to have grip on the thing I Believe it is it on canvas. It is probably like a spray paint on canvas and canvas would really grip nicely on like an old roller like that so that makes sense. And then and here are the cutter wheels like this, but it doesn't go over the top.
it actually goes under there like that. onto this and he's obviously put some tape down here so that doesn't get Sneyd on the exit hole here. and a lot of people said well, the exit hole must have been really big because it needed to line up to actually go through and stuff like that. No, you only need a little slither and that would have done the job fairly well.
So yeah, I mean if it was shredded and then put through until it was like well maybe all you had to do was have the back of the wooden frame which we don't see actually come out to here like closer to the as close to the rollers like this and it could easily be pre done under this. I was like a priority, partially pre-cut which is what I speculated previously and then it was just sitting there ready to poke out. so you're really only needed like a couple of millimeters at most there to actually get the the shredded artwork out of that thing. You could easily our guide that out.
no problems whatsoever. So that is confirmed. the razor blades on here and we're just for show and we've got more stuff which is just for show coming up. So let's continue here and let's have a look and this is interesting one that you'll note that the motor this looks like old and crusty so he's obviously or whoever built this I'm still not, you know, not entirely convinced that Banks he actually did the build himself is yeah and got lots of accomplices and stuff helping him out and things like that.
Anyway, got some nice nice hot snot there on the wires. you don't want those coming out. well it's not hot snot looks like a silastic there. You'll note this toothed cog belt here.
This is actually different as what we'll see in a minute. so take note of that. So continue. and here's obviously a test piece.
Here's the front of the thing. The artwork would be like this black part, so they're putting in a test artwork in here. It goes down under the front of the rollers there. I'm not sure why these have like some square look so they they almost like they look square the pieces on them.
Not sure what's going on there anyway it's going under like that but why it's only some of them aren't getting start mate like this was an early testing and you'll notice so that looks like a different belt yet again and we'll see coming up. We'll see yet another belt so it's and maybe if you can just see under there you can see my be some of the slot where it comes out and it doesn't look very big at all. So let's continue and check it out. Look, the belt is entirely different. The coal wheels are entirely different. it's much thicker look at that. So obviously you went through at least you know two or three different design iterations here to try and get this pulley mechanism right. So you know, obviously like a lot of efforts gone into this to make sure this thing works and that's what you'd expect from an engineering point of view.
You wouldn't. You know you want this prank to be. You know a high probability of succeeding. so you know you want to put a reasonable amount of engineering into this to make sure.
So it doesn't surprise me at all that it's being refined over time. So obviously I think it must have been in their possession for quite a long time to like build the frame and everything else we're we're talking weeks. at least you know this sort of test. build this design, that build it.
you know, test it and refine it and everything else. So yeah, it's been there quite some time, but you can see now there you know the this shows it pre-shredded Like like I said, it's under their cuts on the wheels. it's already over here. They've got another roller on top to make it smooth like that, but we don't see the frame that comes over the top.
but it's obviously they've got to cut out here, but as I said, you wouldn't need, you wouldn't need much clearance there at all. You'd only need like two millimetres tops. not much at all to actually ensure that that painting comes out. So a lot of people said oh, they would have noticed the huge big hole at the bottom of the thing because it needed to be big so that you know to ensure that although the canvas that could be cooled up, it might get caught and all that sort of jazz.
Know you can get away with that with just a millimeter or two easily because once it's already in in that it's already in the shredder and the roller like that, it's just going to push it out and as I said, the wood can come down on top of that so it's just going to guide straight out and you'll notice that it looks like this one actually doesn't have the tape on there that we saw back here. Look at that that actually protrudes out some way. So yeah, this, this video is highly cut together with lots of different things. And it's it's and well as we'll see.
Let's just let's just keep going, shall we? Now here we go. This is interesting. This is the battery here. and once again I Thought the white one over here was a battery and we'll get to that.
but this is a JMT It's actually this battery. This Lithium-ion battery. here. it's exactly the same one, which is a 38 36 watt hour battery there and nominal.
you know, twelve volt. So more than enough 180 amps, cold cranking amp. You know it's designed for motorbikes or whatnot. More than enough to drive the the motors, You know, at any sort of torque required to actually get the the shredder and the thing rolling and everything else. So no problems whatsoever. And when you're talking about 36, what our capacity if they'll run in the receiver off this, how long could the receiver last? Well, let's just take say you know, a real high-power receiver for example, with no extra tech to like reduce the power consumption. Let's say 50 milli watts. About every 50 milli watts our consumption.
that's a month's worth of standby use. so you can basically, but that drains and that uses the full capacity the battery. Then there'd be nothing left to do the rollers. But as I said in the previous video, it's more than possible.
To, you know, get many years standby. There's many different ways you can reduce your power consumption to get a receiver standing by, even for a couple of years if it is a couple of years. as Banksy said which I still don't think is the case I think it's probably more recent than that. but I don't know the history of the actual frame and all.
this must have been designed and built into the original frames. not like the original frame was there and then they retrofitted it and you know, cut it all up and all that sort of jazz it was. It was built-in whenever the frame was built. So I don't know the history of that and then we've got motor.
and then it says receive receiving MO toy motor receive oh that's an AA in I don't I don't know Anyway, hmm interesting. Are these actually banks his hands? I've got no idea doing this. Okay, whether or not the hands are they now. this is hilarious.
This is. this is an epic fail. This is an Am tech. This is a soldering iron banks.
He's got to be trolling us. He's gotta be be because you don't hold a soldering iron with the hot part. Mmm smells like chicken. It just reminds me of these Stock image fails here and there.
These are absolutely hilarious. Like hot air gun. Brilliant. Anyway, Banksy's got to be trolling us because that's hilarious.
Anyway, all this stuff here matches up to the image of when he's put in the back panel on Sodor Looks, you know it all. looks legit. no worries. I'm But once again, like the the blade mechanism, it's just it's in there as a dog-and-pony show.
It does absolutely nothing. So yeah, it's just I don't know why just to get us a little talking and analyzing it or something like that. Anyway, let's continue. Okay, it looks like we've got the same shot as what we had in the previous video and this is interesting.
Look: using a staple gun to put it down. even though it's got these little arm. you know the little don't know what you call those those little tab push down tab things you typically get on the back of our picture frames and stuff like that. Even though it's got those, he's actually it looks like if it's legit if it's not another troll because we can't see the staples behind there using a staple gun to actually staple the back frame on. And a lot of people said, well, why didn't Sotheby's inspect it? Well, it's got. you know. Not only is it authenticated by Banksy's authentication house, he apparently gave them instructions that look, don't touch the frame. This is my frame.
This is how I want it presented. Please respect me as an artist or their I don't know, whatever it is I think I would believe it came with instructions from them saying this is his frame. don't touch so these Sotheby's didn't touch I'm not sure what the window is here or what that white thing in there is that some sort of other sort of like arts and built in or isn't an authentication certificate is I don't know what's actually inside the back of that window or why it's there, but you know presumably or whether or not like there was another box installed in there because we didn't actually see that aha look Yes, they just noticed that that looks like the box is built into here so you can't see the rest yet you can't see the rest of the mechanism. Okay, so that's all.
Maybe it's some debt authentication certificate or you know, whatever signature or whatever. So yeah, it looks like that was all integrated into the back Anyway, they place it and then there's more footage of what happens at the at the auction and lots of footage splitting here. I haven't counted different everything. It's brilliant anyway.
I'll link in the original video and there's lots of behind the scenes stuff. So how many collaborators you've had in the audience? we don't know which at the end so that you can edit this together, it's a pretty slick edit. Anyway, we get up to the option and there's more option footage that we haven't actually had seen before. so there's just tons of footage and it's really slick.
Hammer drops and some people right there speculated that he actually pressed a button down here and saw these being on it and he pressed the remote control button then and there. Of course Banksia said that they're not in it and I absolutely believe him that they're not in on it. So yep, and then here we go that we show thee we show the transmitter here. I Don't think this.
this was not shot in that room. This is not live doing it. This is a recreation doing this. So I'm greatly doubting that was actually shot in the thing because you know somebody else is holding the camera.
It's not the person they presumably Banksy or Banksy's cohort actually pressing the button there. So I don't know what sort of remote is that? I don't know. It could like some sort of RF remote something like that. and then it recedes to shred itself.
And here we go in rehearsals that worked every time. Banksy is saying that it was designed to be shredded all the way. and there's two. There's the test thing. That's how it should have worked. Now there's two aspects to this one. is that I think that's really cool because he doesn't like his artworks being auctioned off and stuff like that. So he's like against all this sort of stuff, so completely shredding the artwork to make it worthless actually makes sense.
really. So shredding the artwork completely to make it worthless. Well, I Don't know if it's worthless. The frame itself might actually still be worth something, but not nearly as much as if as it actually happened.
it got stuck halfway for some reason. Banksy Yard claims that it malfunctioned and something went wrong. It only did it halfway, which of course leaves it as an intact object, which makes it much more valuable than if the painting just came out in strips and you can't put it. How do you put it back together? And it's not the original thing, so it's worth an awful lot more now.
I Think now that it's actually been the art expert that I am that it's actually only half shreddy because it's a complete intact object that still has the original thing. but if it was completely shredded and you just got all the shards on the floor, they had to pick it up, take it away, how do you put it back together and re-do it? It's just it's not. It wouldn't be worth nearly as much if the prank was actually pulled off and it completely shredded itself. So I believe Banksy when he says that it was supposed to shred, it's that.
the whole thing and it failed. How did it fail? We just don't know. Did he get stuck there? Looks like you know. they should have had enough fart talking though in those motors to actually do it seem to be proceeding smoothly and evenly down through there.
So yeah. I I'm not sure what the why it actually did that. Let's just watch that again cuz it's just great. This is how it was supposed to be pulled off.
Maybe it got jammed on the side or something like that. You know, as I said I would have thought there would be enough talking now to just drag the whole thing through that. That would have been really cool. but anyway, that is a fantastic prank.
Well done Banksy And thanks for sharing the more behind the scenes. but I think we're still being trolled? I mean there's various versions of the mechanism here and like the solder and I and a stuff like that. And like I said before, like this white thing in this white pack here looks for all the world like a large do-it-yourself battery pack. Look, it's got like I think they've got to be close to 18 650 sighs I Could actually get the size.
You can actually get the size of the battery I Won't bother doing it now, but if you want to do some homework, get the size of that battery and then you know, is it like what cells are they 18 650 Hi, it looks like they're all whacked together as I said in a pack like that. So dude, is it actually two batteries in here? One powers the receiver and one just. He wanted all the juice available in that battery for the for the mechanism. Because so let's just go back to the main battery here and take a look, shall we? If you have a look, we've got that cell very low self discharge maximum of five percent per month. So if it was there four years, right, this wouldn't be the best solution. As I said in the previous video, if I was designing this and it had to last at least many years like you just didn't know when or if it might be auctioned. I I'm just not buying that because if you did that, you wouldn't use a rechargeable Lithium my on bike battery like this. You use a lithium primary cell solution with you know, ten years plus battery life guaranteed you use, you know, top quality Panasonic's or whatever.
just guaranteed to work for that length of time. So you know, really? I'm still not buying that you know, many years before thing. So yeah, anyway, it's got enough. but you know, five percent per month If it's if it's years, right? it's gone ski, it's not going to be enough juice left in that pack.
where Sarah see is that the receiver tucked on the outside of it there? Anyway, yeah, I don't know, but it's great if there's still. You know Some more questions here, but it's brilliant anyway. let us know what you think in the comments down below. If you liked the video, give it a big thumbs up as always.
catch you next time.
GEWELDIG 😊👍
Lithium batteries can have a lifespan of more than 30 years.
It is quite conceivable that the shredder will take care of the rest in the event of a resale.
They had to realize that it was to heavy to be just a painting
Imagine if the batteries had spectacularly failed and the whole thing went up in smoke..
Anyway, seems like he's learned to include a bunch of red herrings in anything he makes public. I don't think anyone's figured out who he is yet, so it's working
That frame would have been suspiciously heavy… Also however was it triggered at the correct time
That thing must be suspiciously heavy.
Well, I guess until they don't show any "autopsy" of the mechanism, there is no answer! Did they ever release any information after the event or jus sold it for even more money?
In the latter case, I would say that it was a brilliant prank from the seller itself, including Sotherby's
To quote Gavin Belson…. "Fuck Banksy" !!!!
There is no basis to assume, that the piece would be of less worth, if it was totally shredded. It's unique in its current state, it would be unique in a total shredded way.
Since shredding was intended from the beginning, it isn't ruined. Either it is complete or incomplete.
From an artist, ruining his own work intentionally, we can't know, whether telling that it was intended to be completely shredded is another twist to ruin it. It's great art and at least bringing more humor into art. That's fine.
the whole ordeal is a fun demonstration of how you cant beat the system
How could the auction house not be in on it? Surely they inspect every aspect of a 1.4 million dollar piece of art.
Being that there were 600 of them wouldn't it still add value being the only one that was shredded also that it was shredded in a one of a kind frame by built by the original artist? If it was shredded into tiny pieces I could see reassembly being a problem but strips? Backer board, some kind of adhesive and careful placement would make it almost like new.
We have no way to tell what was inside the frame. We have a known 'fibber' (being nice here) providing what is clearly NOT real footage in order to troll — eg., the soldering iron held like a test probe. That should make us immediately suspicious of ANY claim s/he makes about the prank. Furthermore, there may well have been a take up spool for the original, and a separate COPY inside that was meant to be shredded. Note in the image how the shredded part comes out behind the original. Yes, it could be wrapping around a wheel to guide it out. But it could also be a take-up spool meant to wind up the original, and to spit out the shredded part. It's also worth noting that the 2nd canvas could have been partially pre-shredded and spooled onto a 2nd roller inside the machine, thus negating any need whatsoever for any actual shredding later. So all that shredding stuff inside there may well not be inside there — you're assuming it's there because of a video you've seen which you know is full of LIES (eg. exacto blades). If I am correct, the amount of electronics needed inside would be quite a bit less, and therefore less heavy. You'd just need two tubes — one to wrap the original around, and the other to EXPEL the pre-shredded piece.
HEY HEY! the video is back up!
I see you won the claim 😀
I actually think it looked like a very cheap hack together of random parts, taped, with crappy wood, misc screws found on the floor, and odd bits of metal bent randomly together. Something I would have done when I was 10 years old, and not very professional. Now, that I have better tools, and much less money than a famous artist, I could still build this shredder in a frame without it looking like this cheap pile of glued taped old firewood and bent metal "hope it works" pile of overpriced crap. Good on them for hacking it together and pulling this trick off in any case.
Since when was that model of battery sold?
(Li primary batteries probably makes more sense for this type of application)
you won!
