One of the new projects we picked up this summer was this barn-find 1986 Honda Fourtrax TRX 350 that had been sitting since 1995. The story goes that it belonged to our Dad’s coworker when he was younger and living in Colorado. After moving to Texas, the elevation change meant it never ran quite right. They brought it to a Honda Powersports dealer they changed the jetting, but it still didn’t run properly so it has sat until now. Mr. Keith was kind enough to let us have the Fourtrax for free to see if we could get it running. Our first idea was to just completely rebuild the carburetor after checking that there were no major issues that would prevent it from running and it ended up working out pretty well! This ATV is an amazing piece of history and an absolute tank, next video we will do some more test driving and seeing a little bit of what it’s capable of before doing a full refresh and possibly taking it to our local off-road park!
Thanks for watching, stay safe and stay tuned for the next video!

This is a 1986 honda, four tracks, trx 350, that's been sitting since 1995. yeah, so we actually had a pretty lucky story. With this thing, our dad's co-workers dad actually had this sitting in his garage. They brought it down from colorado, were never able to get it to run right in texas.

So he look. He just gave it to us for free. It was sitting there, he had no value for it and he thought it'd be better for us to have a chance of getting it running yeah. So thank you to mr keith and his father, and so we're going to see if we can't get this thing back to its form of glory.

So this thing's been sitting since 1995. You can tell from these colorado ohv decals. I mean this thing is dirty like this thing's been sitting in a barn for so long, but it's a really great platform and we should be able to get this running. The quality and condition of 10 is beautiful, all the graphics, the plastics i mean most of these that you see online like the plastics, are faded or they're cracked.

This thing is like perfect: it has a full color. The tires aren't even dry around it, and this is from 1995. So it's in good condition. Let's start taking a couple, looks around and see what's what yeah? So this thing has electric start? It has a kickstart down here.

Um it has i'm not. I don't remember how many speeds i think it might be four speeds with reverse or end reverse, not entirely sure on that, but um yeah, this thing's, pretty great. You know feeling everything the brakes are good. The throttle is stuck, i mean it feels good got headlight.

You get there's a little gauge cluster right here. You can see your oil tan if you're in neutral, reverse your ignition. It's even got a helmet holder right here. Yeah got some fender vents ready for boarding water.

You got a front and rear rack. This looks like it comes up. That's uh! This right here is probably a smoker kit. Yeah, let's see we got ta open.

The treasure, hey, i'm seeing some cool stuff already. Honda is that i hope that's a sticker because that's sweet, that is cool state of colorado parks and restaurants. That looks like an old jet that might be the stock jet from 86.. This is like a vehicle registration got something right there, original 1986, four tracks manual.

Look at those graphics wow. This is awesome. We got got the fuse box back here, all a bunch of klein tools. We use them today.

Actually some bolts, yeah wow. It's like all the way we're gon na need, yeah we're pretty set up, and the last thing to look at is under the seat. Hopefully, some areas under here so yeah we got you know the air box gas tank. Oh maybe a little extra tool, so gold treasure chest huh.

Usually there is a little tool kit under the seat. So if you have another oem, oem honda tools or something 1986 spiders on here, that's actually kind of gross, but yeah there is glue to it. There's like a little spark plug wrench in here, oh dear. I don't want to touch it.
Let's see, yeah! Oh yeah! We got a little spark plug wrench, some other size wrenches, you know. Actually this is a pretty extensive tool kit for there's a spring like a carved stuff here. Some pressure gauge a tire gauge yeah, there's a bunch of stuff in here. That's cool, i'm most excited about the spiders.

This might be an oil filter, wrench how's, this still going together. Oh here's this! This is your screwdriver, and this goes in. Oh, it's a gauge! It's a tire pressure gauge yeah. I know that you didn't buy that.

That's all i told you i don't know this spring probably goes in there right, yeah, but there's no. This works the tire pressure gauge it's important to test dude. There's not! It works point five kilograms per centimeter squared there's. No other thing works at all, so what we do know is that it used to run in colorado and it would run and then die at texas so automatically.

We know that colorado higher altitude, thinner air. So that means the jet would be leaner in colorado. So now that it's in texas, you got denser air, so hopefully what we're thinking is. We just put it back to a stock jet, just a carb rebuild and this thing might actually run.

That's fingers crossed we're. Not sure yet so, let's just get started. Okay, so first things first is we're going to take the carb off. So we have carb is right.

Here we got some intake piping and some bracing in the way, so we'll have to strip all this down to access. The car, okay, there's the air box and more spiders more spiders, see what the air filter looks like. Oh actually, that's bad, that's not bad coming coming close, so i was like. Oh this air filter looks good and they touched it and just melts.

So, yes, that is probably one of the few dry rotted things on this. That's wait! Oh, it feels like sand. It's not gross! It's like touching moon sand. Let's make sure we're not getting any okay good.

It has a metal filter at the back. So we're not getting any in the it's like. It's literally like moon sand, get like a piece of paper. We're gon na keep this okay.

There goes a little air hose about to check this for pieces of filter and then now we just got to disconnect throttle cable choke, and this should come out okay, so i just got the fuel lines and then we have all these little vacuum lines that are Dry rotted other than that, though, all the fuel lines, the like vents and stuff. It's just these little, i'm not sure. If these are vacuum or vent lines, i haven't really looked at them yet, but those are really the only things we have problems with. So yeah cool, so our carb is out.

So one thing you cannotice is that our throttle is actually stuck like it does not move at all. So it's not like the cable is bound up. It's the actual throttle slide is stuck so maybe a big issue we'll have to see. Hopefully i can just open it up and free it up easily, but you never know with this type of stuff: yeah.
Okay, so that's just some throttle stuff. So yeah you set your idle here and there's the throttle return spring is down here instead of up in here, which is actually kind of interesting. I didn't know that so, as you can see, it's, the slide itself is bound, so we're going to have to take off some more stuff. We've got the butterfly in the car open a little bit um, so everything's moving a little bit more, so we're at least able to get the carb out.

We're definitely have to do a lot of cleaning and lubricating this thing to make sure and then we'll have to make sure nothing's you know seized that will cause us problems in the future. Okay, so we'll start from the top okay. So we can see right here that it is not actually the slide. That's the problem, so the slide and the linkage up to here is all free.

So it's either that joint right there that joint right there or this right here. That is our problem. Okay. So, let's see i'm sure, there's some gas sitting in here yeah honestly, i've seen worse, it's like very dusty, but it all comes out.

It's not gummy! So you know that's just old gas, but not like bad gross rusty gas. So you know not too bad. So i've been working at this with some carb cleaner and we've actually been making a lot of progress. It's almost clear when i go in here, but um it actually moves now.

So that's a great sign. You know we got both the butterfly and the slide. Moving up and down really smoothly, just like a mikuni or any other carb, so that is great. We have a carb rebuild kit, so we'll be able to change out the jets for the stock ones, and then we should have a lot of new needles.

New float. All that stuff that'll all be new, so this car should work by the end of this. So before we get the um the carb all situated, because if you look over here, we've got the carb all bolted in uh on the back side, throttle's hooked up chokes hooked up all of that stuff. But before we get that totally buttoned up and put all those billions of hoses on there, we are gon na swap this battery out and it has life enough, then yeah, maybe not honestly.

We should try and charge it because what? If okay? But there we go we'll swap this out for a battery that we got from real powersports, which is not the same size, because we didn't know what size this thing was, but it should work. Here's our battery from go power - sports just slide this guy right in here, so it's same size just not as tall so it'll still work got the gas cap off and that is the latch or it used to be yeah. The latch screwed up one side, one side, unlocked the other side. We had to pull her off gross okay guys, so the gas smells super.

Bad and hopefully y'all can see this, but it is not in good shape in there. So i'm not really sure if we're gon na be able to use this gas tank, so good news, we have the key yeah and the lights turn on on and off high beam and low beam. So that's a good sign. You know some of the electronics are working at least so um yeah the gas tank.
We don't have gas in it, but i'm just gon na use a bit of starting fluid and you know we'll just crank it over if it cranks over yeah. Actually, i guess we'll check the cranks over first. Okay, that's good uh, put the kill, switch on run, pull the parking brake just in case it says it's a neutral. We have a nice neutral leg following right now, and you know i'm just gon na go for it.

I mean, of course we haven't, checked, spark or anything like that, but you know if it fires, then that's a great sign. Okay, no way no way do it again. Yeah i mean we should only change the spark plug, but that's crazy. This thing's been sitting since 1999, 26 years, yeah good thing number one.

Oh there we go okay, 26 years, this thing's been sitting and it just fired right up. That is insane. Yeah hondas are great yeah, so yeah right now we're kind of gon na have to do some little things: maintenance kind of change. The oil change spark plug the air filter, as you all saw, was horrible new gas tank.

I mean honestly we'll be able to ride it so guys we kind of are in luck. We we're just seeing what the oil is like and yeah. It's like golden oil. That's not even black at all so um.

You know no worries about this for now. You know, of course, we'd like to change it later because it was old, but i just hooked up a lovely predator gas tank to this thing. We got it going into the fuel pump because um, what you all heard was the fuel pump just priming for a bit after it ran so i'll, just plug in the wires, and we can see if this thing will run off of its own carburetor, because that Was the main issue with the sink before it was parked in 1995? That is like. I feel weird like that.

That's insane, this is great. I was expecting like. Oh, the rectifier is burnt out like all this stuff. All the bad like battery doesn't charge all that stuff, but dude i didn't even put the air box on and it ran pretty well like this is actually wow.

Okay, i cannot tell y'all how in shock i am by this thing and excited. I am to actually drive it. I mean we have headlights with the high beams on so yeah. Let's see, i think it's huge too, like a song in a car throwing down the hat yeah, so it doesn't want to idle.

That's like the only problem with it, and maybe it has an exhaust leak. That is it's like dude, it's fast too. I mean 350. This thing is this thing kind of it's kind of booking it boogies yeah i mean y'all.

Y'All saw that's pretty fast wow. I, like, i almost feel like robbed of like a victory kind of like it was just so easy, but i mean that's a good complaint to have. If i'm gon na have one so yeah, i definitely need to you know tidy it up a little bit um. It the downshifts, are super harsh, like really really harsh.
I don't know if it just needs to be kind of be worked back in again or something like that or i don't know, but um definitely kind of button it up a little bit and we're probably going to kind of drive it before we get the gas Tank in we'll probably drive with this predator tank on there um and then we'll get the gas tank on pressure. Washer clean it up have basically a full restoration. You.

Mini quad vs big quad video?

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Luke Combs says:

And I know for a fact these quads only run well with the factory air box don’t drill holes in the box and don’t leave the lid off these engines are sensitive to intake and exhaust changes

The Honda trx350 fourtrax is the first 4wd atv ever built and that is all original down to the tires you got a tru barnfind I have a 87 trx350 it’s a 5speed auto clutch all time 4wd it has oil cooling with a single overhead cam 4valve true 350cc it has the same topend at the 85-86 Honda atv 350x 3wheeler leave it original as possible it’s worth about 3k how it sits

It won't idea right without air filter and air box on it. But that's still a great score

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Eugene Back Yard Repair says:

That tool kit bigger score then the quad. They are either gone or .missing most of the tools

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars chad richards says:

Shifts hard because you have old oil in a wet clutch. But that thing is geared super low dude. It aught to rip

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Zach Stahl says:

If it came from higher altitude of Colorado and never ran right in TX it needs re-jetting. Also it sounds like you are sucking lots of air? If the air box isn't on you cant adjust the carb correctly. Super nice quad that will only continue to appreciate.

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Omri K says:

nice work!!! it looks alot similar to the old suzuki quads…. like the king quad
    * i would let it warm up, go for a ride and then change the oil before the engine cools down.
it is very likely that the gears and clutch will be frozen…they will need a long ride to get loose

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Uncrustable says:

    it's a hoonndaaaaa

sounds like it has an exhaust leak and it's getting too much air it's bogging

I haven't seen the video yet. But, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say yes. It's a Honda. The damn things can sit forever. I have a '73 CL350 that's been sitting for about 20 years. If I clean the carbs and put a battery in it, I have no doubt it'll start right up.
