Hi I'm in the dumpster room again. somebody's been moving in. We got a bunch of stuff. Who's there? There's a microwave behind.

They're throwing out some old stuff anyway. some carpets gone, someone's someone's renovating. We're doing something anyone would stir that. They got a dice seat cube thing in some parts a rolling backpack.

Okay, no worries. but your this, there's something down there that looks like maybe some sort of big you know AV receiver it kind of, you know. surround thing. Oh oh, fish that out? Well hello.

this is like a this is the Yamaha it's got HDMI Bluetooth Wi-Fi Pandora Music streaming seven channel air but don't know how recent it is. bitter. Geez. I mean there's your Wi-Fi antenna.

Unbelievable. Is it no idea. But wow, that's fantastic. Take it back to the lab.

Peridot, Crack it open. Well, this isn't too shabby at all. It's a Yamaha Eric's V five, seven nine. It's a pretty recent model, it does, you know.

Spotify Pandora it's got Wi-Fi Bluetooth 4k HDMI switching seven channel amp it works with Alexa apparently and it's an like you can still kinda sorta buy it as probably it might be officially discontinued or whatever. but that's pretty schmick for finding in the dumpster. and the backs got all the records that stuff. We've got a HDMI out and 6h TMI ins Network got all the old-school stuff.

Of course you got all your binding post speaker terminals Wireless and whoo so yeah, forgive me I wait, tear it down I Want to see if it works? First of all, let's pairing up. All right, let's see if the magic smoke escapes Didn't hear a bang. So yeah, we're gonna stand by lead. just you might not be able to see that.

Hey Main on HDMI to So the process is working here. all the relays clicking and we've got HDMI Input DVR Aux bluetooth net-net Radio Network Radio USB we can play from the USB stick presumably unfortunately. no I don't have the remote for this. Yes, I did look in their dumpster I Always look in the dumpster Pro Dumpster diving Tip: Always look for the remote controls and other accessories and stuff like that because people will usually chuck those out as well.

but in first pass that is at least booting and doing stuff. Click and relays. We're no winner. Chicken dinner, Check it out! I've got direct straight through to the ox and that works.

a treat. Beauty but couldn't get the tuna work in a plug day like a it's just a wire into the back but I am in the lab here so maybe we don't get radio reception too great. But anyway, the output power ramp is working at least on those two channels. Fantastic! And the HDMI switching works as well.

it's there. just a renamed it DVR 550 H that's obviously what they were using before the computer generating that and it's outputting. So yes, just an old PC don't don't have a ready HDMI source on my bench I Tried my Rygel 7000 scope but it didn't output anything I don't know. Stop the moment.

We have sound and at least on two channels and HDMI switching as well so it looks like it's a winner winner chicken dinner so far, at least it's useful even if there is some other fault with it. So let's have a look inside this thing. I Have found a Yamaha before in the dumpster. it was quite a few years ago now and I did a repair video on that I'm sure.
so I'll link that in coz that board down there is kind of familiar I'm not sure if it's the same one that was in the previous repair that I did, but anyway, it does seem overly familiar. Nippon chemi-con caps Fantastic. You know, like top quality. So terrific.

What else have we got but the main processor board? Of course. You'll notice that of course because this is, you know, dense modern logic. Everything else. It's multi-layer board.

Well, is it for, is it to? They squeezed it all on two layers? They're not sure. Anyway, a multi-layer board? Yep. Yep. that would be a multi-layer board.

They've got to all the differential pair traces and everything else. You wouldn't be able to just get the ground on the bottom. So yeah, that one's your, you know, your traditional modern board. and then everything else is just your regular like you know or might not phenolic base, but certainly not the same quality fr for price.

they've really got down. These are all single sided boards with the link. Here's the power amp. all the caps looking good Nick they're Nittany cheek on caps so no worries whatsoever.

So they're all single sided. So was that just a couple of channels? That's obviously just a couple of channels there. So and of course the main board. huge board down the bottom.

It's also single sided. and of course the power supply is single sided. That's a common place to save cost. Transformer looks great and there's a front panel.

PCB I've got another double sided job. so your more traditional I got a couple of boards on the front panel. Stuff like that everything looks fine I'm not seeing any signs of distress or any bulging or leaking caps or anything like that. Even though they are good quality can still happen.

So we need to get some of the big power caps down the bottom. We have to go in and have a look at those. but anyway there's all your TI sidam ODSP that does your all your DTS and everything else whatnot there. It is better.

look at the code. you've got it to read the code on these chips you often got the and get the light at the right angle. Stuff like that looks like we've got our Wow that's our Wi-Fi receiver there silicon image. Not sure.

that's like a yeah, that's our HDMI receiver and switcher. So anyway, that all looks good. I Really like how they've got these our interconnection boards taking it down the bottom. This some sort of like there's a double-sided load on that.

In fact these are single sided boards with double-sided surface mount on the wall surface mount on the bottom. but they are actually single sided interconnect boards that go from the big processor board down to the main board down the bottom. There a couple of nice-looking three what pair resistors there like those and then we've just got like interconnection boards and stuff like that that that looks like it does absolutely nothing but just interconnects wiring, harnesses and things like that. so they would have yep, I check on the back.
there's no parts. they got some option links there so that looks like it's just a like a selection board or something like that. maybe for different models or whatnot. I'm sure they got their reasons for it and this board here is fascinating.

Look, it's basically they got over why they're big. like why are sneaking around there that just looks like it's just used to wrap up those cables. It's soldered on the back here, but there seems to be no other purpose for that. It's got a like a sock 23.

I Know it's got a little RF connector footprint on the back, which is weird, but yeah, I'm why they've gone to that sort of trouble just to keep those. but once again it could be like different models and it like you don't know the design of the different models and what their requirements are. But anyway, yeah it's very nicely designed and assembled and there's no dust or anything else in here. It's clean as a whistle.

Beautiful! I've done that cable rap in here too. You can see that wire soldered on the back of the board and it's just wraps around holding all that in place. and they've also done it over here as well in a couple of places. Neat and other attention to detail.

Look at this there the Wi-Fi antenna cable here. but they've cable tied it in there which is nice but look, they've added a little roll of foam in there just to like protect the the wire. That's nice. It's curious to see the power transistors down there.

none of this integrated circuit rubbish. They've got discrete down there for all the channels. Everything looks in great. Nick and I Can't fault this thing at all.

It interestingly there, there's sort of like on an angle that heatsink is like on an angle which is really kind of funky like it. and those main power filter caps down in there. There's two of them, they look in great condition. They're actually Yamaha branded, probably you know, rebadged Nippon Chemi-con or you know Yamaha I Don't believe they make capacitors, but audio for audio wanker.

ER grade electrolytic main caps in there. and there's a whole bunch of relays and everything else. I Won't get the board out because you've got to get a lot of effort to take this whole thing apart to show you. it seems like a bunch of smaller caps under there and stuff like that and I can see them, but it's hard to get it on camera.

but everything looks fine in this thing. There's no blonde components, no bulging caps, no nothing. So I'm I'm very impressed I Can yeah, I have to do some more thorough testing maybe, but this seems to be somebody's dumped it for some reason and it seems to work just fine. but unfortunately I can't like without the remote control.
I Don't believe I can get in. maybe via the network or something perhaps. but yeah, like how to like configure it all up and set up the Wi-Fi and stream and all that sort of jazz. Check it out.

I'm actually doing a remote firmware upgrade via the Wi-Fi connection. I Was able to do the WPS thing to simply connect to my Wi-Fi box here I didn't need the remote is press the button on my router over there it connected, you hold down our street and press power to get into the like the setup menu of this thing and one of them is a year for a USB or network firmware upgrade. I wasn't version now 1.09 it told me and now it looks like it's downloading latest firmware from the web. That's fantastic.

Alright, I think it's verified. Let's see what happens. No, no, she was downloaded another s. Maybe it's got multiple firmware and stuff.

Mm-hmm I don't know. Verify and verify and verify. It's fantastic that you can do this erasing. Ok, so right, it was downloading.

Then it's got to verify the contents of what it's downloaded. Then it's got to erase the flash. Oh no, there you go. S6 - All right.

So these are obviously a different processor e things in there that need firmware. Update Update Success Woot! Please power off. So as I said, you press straight. When you pair it up, you're into the advanced Setup remote.

ID TV Format you nip. Update: As I said you can choose USB or network version 2.59 Wow Yeah, I was running 1.09 before so that's a heck of an update. So unfortunately I can't do much else. Sorry about that.

If the thighs you want to see me repair it or something doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it. And yes, I do actually score this stuff in the dumpster. It was dumped in the thing like it was. It seemed to me it was like almost carefully placed on top of the box or something like that.

wasn't like, you know, throwing in or something like that. But I don't know what's wrong. Did they change their system and they didn't need it anymore. We did it.

We did. a company move out of the corporate office complex that we've got here and didn't need it. It was surplus to requirements or something I have no idea. but yeah, I can probably erase this on ebay.

you don't really have a use for it myself, so not sure what I'm gonna do with it anyway. If you like the dumpster-diving video on a quick little tear down on this thing, give it a thumbs up and all that sort of jazz cuz it always helps a lot. Catch you next time.

A friend of mine owns a company that hauls away old furniture and appliances but has also been paid many times to take away brand new tv sets, microwaves and even a refrigerator still in their boxes. He also gets pretty expensive lawn tractors with just a dead battery or clogged fuel filter or some other minor problem. Like they say one mans trash.

It would be ironic if the fault was with the unit's remote control receiver.

Literal 'throw away society' shown in one video 🙁 Are they not big on recycling in Oz or is it just someone in the building being a muppet?

Wow, mine sounds better than this one but I'd still trade it for 4K passthrough and native Spotify steaming and UHD playback. Dang, what a find.

genuine Toshiba C5198/A1541 pair for each channel … Oooh mama

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Michael Flaherty says:

Let it run for a while with the surround sound on. Yamaha's have been known to have faulty surround sound boards. They will work for a while and then they will cut out.

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Ben Helweg says:

Did you try cranking the speakers and running it for a while? I wonder if they were going into protect or cutting out or something like that.

  17. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Woodbridge says:

Just FYI, I have had 3 similar Yamaha HTAs across my bench in the last year or so and every one had a fault in the standby power circuit. All different models but same basic layout. all 3 faults were temperature dependent and due to altered/low value capacitors (the red polyester ones) in the capacitor dropper circuit that gets the standby function up from power on. I don't usually repair very much but these amps all belonged to friends! A fourth, older one, had a small mains transformer for the standby function that also was intermittent with temperature. It could be that your one was thrown away due to no signs of life but is now in a warmer place so the fault is not evident, maybe?

  18. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars 64-bit Micro says:

It's probably a company that's written the tax off on it and it's now just surplus to them, selling would cause tax issues for them so in the dumpster it is.

  19. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Travis Parker says:

If you get the mic for it, it does automatic room correction. I had a Yamaha and now a Denon that sets levels, delay, phase, and EQ for all 5 speakers and the subwoofer. The difference in the sound, especially for multichannel audio, is amazing.

i love the yamaha line of beginner grade av receivers

  24. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Nic says:

Let me buy it and I'll pay the shipping :p

  25. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Tom says:

Maybe it has some long term stability issues?

  26. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars UkSkin says:

With a lot of these amps you'll find an app for your phone that'll let you set it up and configure (uses the network), Have a look on the appstore for a Yamaha remote app
