Hi Just wanted to alert everyone to a trademark scam which you almost certainly get if you have a trademark in something. And how it works is that if you have a trademark on something then your information is accessible in a database and the companies like these. they actually extract all that information. and they bulk mail people.
They send real mails arm instead of you know emails because everyone's used to email scams right? But when you get a letter with what looks like in this particular case an invoice here and I'll show another one I've got from a company in Hungary as well, then they send you these like official looking invoices and what it looks like is that oh, I've got a trademark and they actually have your real trademark name here. They have the classes, the various classes that they're called, that your trademark is under various categories that you're under and it all looks legitimate. and if you don't know any better, you might just pony up the money for this invoice. Now these this scam is not illegal because I'll show you why in a minute because they actually do fully disclose it usually if you actually read down below.
But yeah, they extract your information. They send these letters out in bulk to everyone, hoping that they'll catch a few people out. So let's take a look at this one. This one comes from the brand registration office.
There's no sensor right? It's just some dude in a apartment in that in this case. Germany And they have all your information here. They have your trademark. They want you to pay thirteen hundred and eighty five Euros in this particular case and just and all their wire transfer details.
There it is, you know, transfer the money over and great worldwide office mailing address. So they've got so an office somewhere in the US And let's actually have a read of this because this is why it's not really illegal. It's basically just a solicitation to list you in some stupid database that they have which is absolutely useless. Which useless which no one ever looks at.
and it's just pointless. You've wasted your money, but it technically you know they will list you in this database that they have what they do by paying the indicated amount. You accept this offer that will that will approve Listing this information in the TM Selection 2018 The International Trade Marks and Service Marks Catalog. The total fee is payable in advance and optional.
Before make decision and for more details, visit their website. The law considers a trade might be a form of property. We recommend you take you to take this registration in our exclusive catalog which provides notice to others that above described trademark blah blah blah that's already taken. We are going to issue a publication that contains a depiction of the registered mark, the identification of goods and services and owner information.
This publication will be available in America, Europe, Asia and Australia. The data represents a sample registration. We get our data from free online databases. This is a solicitation. So this particular company. they specifically tell you this is a solicitation. You are under no obligation to pay the amount stated on this letter. Unless you accept this offer, have any further questions.
Please contact Bla bla bla bla bla. So there it is, right. It's a solicitation in the form of like sort of an official-looking invoice. This one's not particularly well done, right, but so they'll list you in your data in there stupid useless database for thirteen hundred and eighty-five dollars.
Now let's have a look at another scam. I've actually Aoi By the way, if you go over to this company's website here, it is night night. Here it is Brand Registration Office. This looks totally legit.
Doesn't it Look at that? Look at the seal that they've got. It's comical. Welcome to the Brand Registration Office. blah blah blah.
Our main business activity, who cares? Write about us And it's privately owned publishing firm. and they just publish a catalogue. You can probably know they might actually print it. You might be able to buy it.
It's just absolutely useless, right? Legal. You may obtain a free copy of our terms and conditions. We're fully committed, blah blah blah. Frequently asked questions, and and you know, they basically tell you that it's their own thing, right? So let's actually go have a look at another one that I actually got.
This one looks a little bit more official trademark. Edition it's called International Catalog of Trademarks 2015 and I got this one a year or two back and they you know you might think you get this official looking invoice thing. you might think oh my trademarks gonna expire I Better pay it. No, don't contact you like just ignore these and or contact your patent attorney that you got it from because they're just absolutely useless and by the way, they will actually tell you if you.
Here's a it's actually a tourism blog of all things from travel. Victoria Trademark Registration scams. There's another IP Government Australia So this is the government website that tells you all about this unofficial trademark invoices. Check the source before you pay and all that sort of stuff.
You can report these things, but I think technically they're probably not illegal. All the government can do is like list them as hey, this isn't a legit thing and you don't have to pay it right? It's not an official thing. So let's have a look at this one here. trademark.
So this is from So Trademark Edition limited in Hungary right? Let's have a look class of goods and services and so a look. The above-mentioned data constitutes a sample registration and if you transfer the amount, you automatically approve this offer for listing and the trademark. Edition catalog and a bla bla bla bla bla in case you wished. In case you wish, this one doesn't actually tell you it's a solicitation, it just has the word in. In case you wish to list your trademark in our international catalog, please pay these fees. Eighteen hundred and fifty Australian dollars. At least they've localized the currency here to make the scam seem a bit more legit cuz I'm from Australia I paid. You know Australian dollars for my trademarks and everything else.
So there you go. It just looks a little bit more legit, but it's just. it's just garbage, right? So do Not fall for these things there. They're just absolutely useless.
You've wasted your money. You might as well flush it down the toilet. So there you go. Just don't fall for these scams cuz you're guaranteed to get them if you have a trademark and you'll just keep on getting them.
Just screw them up. throw them in the bed I Hope that helps catch you next time.
@EEVblog is trademark elite a scam company or a real trademark company ? ??
"You might as well flush it in the toilet". At least flushing it in the toilet gives you a cool swirling effect. What this gives you is the opportunity to be contacted by other scammers.
Damn, I'm Hungaran and i'm ashamed this kind of shady company is working here and doing this scam internationally… I'm sorry for this 🙁
Hi All, i get these at work all of the time.
They fall under 3 categories
1. They grab all the information about trademarks, patents, registered logos and the due date, then about 3 to 4 months before the real due date they send of there chain letters and mail you all the information ( that is correct so you have no reason to doubt it ) and the price to renew being typically 4x to 8x more than the correct price if you deal direct with the Australian government office.
Luckily almost all renewals now come via email to the person who lodged the original or the email address on file.
There have been a few instances in the companies i have worked for where this has been paid to the vultures, but luckily, they done the right thing and then they have paid the goverment direct ( at the lower cost ) thus still making money.
At the current cost of $1 AU for a local stamp, lets call it max $1.05 for Stamp envelope, paper and printer consumables, by making say $400 to $600 in margin they would give you an idea on their break even costs or success rate needed.
2. Magazine advertising, this one is great, typically they come in at $40 to $80 for a trade magazine, distributed to everyone ( everyone except me, we get on average in a week about 20 junk trade magazines from fashion, to flood to hardware to IT ) and i have never head of the ones that are charging fees, typically some staff just enter and pay them or i check history and find they have paid in the past, so they end up on the suckers list and get regular billing 2-3-4 times a year.
i have asked for copies of these magazines and told they are closed subscription or at every petrol station, about 1 in 10 i get a email reply with pdf or microsoft publisher, i then ask who does it go to and why dont i get a copy being a advertiser, that makes them go quiet, i have been told all sorts from boy scouts, to fire / ambulance service, rural fire, PTA, real estate agents , petrol stations, so i ask which one in my area, i will go get a copy , i can find all of those groups locally – i think about 2 times in the last 15 years they have been legit
3. Lost money – lost super, in Australia there is a published list of dormant bank fund , i wont go into it , but those key words are enough to find where they are stored, the same thing, people get the list, then google or white pages the surnames and addresses and start emailing / mail outs, advising they can lodge official forms to help recover money TAKEN BY THE GOVERMENT, they can for a fee or percentage help CLAIM IT BACK. this is a lie, it has not been taken by anyone it is still siting with the financial institution and you can go to any of the banks branches counter with ID and they will match up and transfer or pay you the funds. The same with super
Regards
George
Anyone with a mortgage is also familiar with these scams. When they include postage-paid return letters, I print out a picture of a cute pony with the text "Hey you! Don't be a butt!" and send that back. 😉
Reminds me of patent trolls but less money, I seen a few of these letters for domains about 12 years ago old history.
I forgot about this scam
send those cocksuckers an envelope back with white powder in it
So that's where Peter Popoff went
Trademark Dave that’s all your about is getting as much cash as possible, yet you continue to take the piss out of people, your a YouTube yet you hide your details, your a joke
scammers from Hungary? well, not the first time I feel ashamed of my fucking country…
:'(
I get some just before the time of domain renewals and I instantly know they are just trying to domain slam or snatch.
Same thing if you have a European VAT ID. Sometimes they just send out contracts and hope you mistake it for something legitimite and return it. Then after a few years they charge you a large bill for 'registration fee' and threaten with lawsuits since you did sign the contract 3 years ago.
Don't throw them in the bin, return them filled with the blank forms they send you. They usually send you a envelope with pre-paid postage. It will cost them if you use it.
The Washington DC address is also bogus as DC address always contain what quadrant of the City the address is located (NE,SE,SW,NW) as the street numbers are not unique otherwise.
The first thing you should do after registering a trademark or incorporating a business is buy a large recycling bin, as the junk mail will come flooding in. Most will be easily-recognizable adverts but there will be a fair amount of scams, too. The adverts are usually obvious and can go into the bin unopened but some of the scams look very legitimate and you will have to waste time actually opening and reading them. That's time that could have been spent actually doing work that earns money. There's a cost, even if you don't fall for the scam.
An unrelated question.. What happened to "EEVdumpsterHack"?
"Before make decision" … sure!
This US it's so bad. Even the iPhone have send me the bill for the iPhone X, I hate Chinese phones I can't touch them.
Can't believe people fall for such bollocks.
Wow, did know we export that shit too
note that they are not only doing it for trademarks but all kinds of stuff, like company names etc.
Mmm. How to scam-bait these deplorable ass hats?
Here in US and thanks to US Postal Service initiative to beat spam and scam, you can actually drop all rubbish mail into outgoing box next to incoming right away as is. They will be sent back to sender and sorta DDoS bastards with no subsequent mail from them, kinda spam filter. No effort, huge satisfaction. There's also an web interface where you can sort of mark rubbish you don't want to receive and USPS will recycle it for green right away without delivering to you. Haven't tried that feature yet, but I'm on my way cleaning up my mail box, still getting few letters per week, used to be hundreds per week.
1385 Euros? For you Daiyve, the fee is 1385 ml of Dingo dog's Eurine.
